Crosby gives Canada ice hockey gold with overtime goal February 28, 2010 9:26 p.m. EST
(CNN) -- Canada reserved the best to last as its ice hockey heroes beat arch-rivals the United States 3-2 with an overtime goal from Sidney Crosby to claim the final gold of the Winter Olympics.

Crosby, Canada's star player, broke American hearts with his goal seven minutes and 40 seconds into added time to give the hosts its 14th gold of a triumphant Vancouver Games.

Canada looked headed for a comfortable victory as Jonathan Toews scored in the first period and teammate Corey Perry followed up to make it 2-0 early in the second.

But Ryan Kesler pulled one back later in the second period to set up a frantic finale.

Canada's much-vaunted Stanley Cup hero Crosby missed a breakaway chance to seal the gold for his side but with the clock counting down it seemed not to matter.

That was until the United States threw caution to the wind and Zach Parise forced overtime with just 25 seconds remaining, his fourth goal of the Games for the previously unbeaten in five U.S. squad.

The momentum now appeared to be with the United States, who had beaten Canada 5-3 in a preliminary round match.

But they reckoned without Crosby, who had not been a significant factor in the final until he came good as he received a pass from Jarome Iginla and slid his winning shot under U.S. goaltender Ryan Miller.

It doesn't even feel real. It feels like a dream

--Sidney Crosby
He was immediately mobbed by teammates who had finally lived up to the expectations of an ice hockey-mad nation.

"I just shot it," Crosby told gathered reporters."It doesn't even feel real. It feels like a dream."

It's the first victory for a host country in Olympic ice hockey since the famous United States triumph at Lake Placid in 1980.

But their 2010 counterparts were unable to match their golden feat and it clearly hurt.

"We only came here for one thing we wanted that gold medal, it's really a tough feeling right now. It stings you a lot, said Patrick Kane.

The other gold decided on the 17th and final day of action in Vancouver went to Norway's Petter Northug who won the men's 50km cross country title.

He beat Germany's Axel Teichmann in a two-up sprint with Johan Olsson of Sweden taking the bronze.

For Canada, winning gold at Ice Hocky is like winning the whole of Olympics !!

I went out after the game and every one was honking on the road and cars waving Canadian flags everywhere..

Re-live the glory here

Canadian goals were nothing but net...usa goals were kind of mad scrambles and luck....
US strategy was to hold off in extra time and use their "superior" goalkeeper in a shoot out...

Good thing hockey rules force teams to put one less player on the ice in overtime, forcing a much more
open and aggressive game..Canada got to their "superior" goalie before he could "shine"..ahaha!

Wining the "Winter Olympics" is like winning the Olympics for Retards! ... Oops sorry Sarah Pailin!

90% of the world isn't even represented during these so-called sporting events. .... Excluding the pathetic 2men member token teams sent by the "colored" nations... Where are my (black) brothers at? Its an event designed for my White compadres to earn some gold in games no one plays!....

Its Winter guys for crying out loud!.... Ie time to stay indoors & hibernate ... Stay warm!

Sliding rocks down a patch of ice with broomsticks .... U call that a sport... men wearing dresses and making like a swan Dance on ice..... Call that a sport?

Ice Hockey... Call that a sport???? ... Even most americans have rejected the NHL although the league has whored itself to that market at the expense of the canadian fans....!!!!

If canadians were all that athletic they would be proving their mantel in the summer olympics!.... Aren't muscles used for both type of sports?... even though canada sends an army of athletes to the summer olympics.... canada is left standing in the dust in with hardly a medal (excluding the couple earned by some Jamaican immigrant) in the the real olympics games ... The summer olympics... !!!!

:)

Relax... Guys im just kidding ..... Lol....
I am a born & bred 2nd generation Canadian,..... Just kidding.... Lol.... I just wish we did better in the summer games... Good one guys... "own the podium"... 4fever!

well,

US does not dominate in all "world" sports does it? What about 1996 Olympics in USA, when
Donovan Bailey and his crew dominated US mens in 100 m and 4x100 m, pretty much the
signature event of the whole summer olympics...lately US boxers and sprinters have been shut
out on the world stage.....dont even mention soccer, they are nowhere there...look at how brazil
came back from 2-0 down to whip them 3-2 in the confederations cup final...

US has 10x the population of canada..but produced less gold medals in the winter olympics...they
spend so much more on sports than anyone, but in team sports can only dominate b-ball and football....

I woudl say the US is pretty darn good in many sports that people dont even play or follow...Noone plays or even follows soccer and hockey here but the US has decent teams in both... I am sure more people in Pakistan play and watch soccer than in the US...But look where the Pakistani soccer team is compared to the US.
