Attractive? Shanghai is just a giant modern city with tall buildings. Last time when I visited Shanghai, I found no place that was worth a visit. Can you imagine a city with no place for sightseeing? It is boring and depressing. The surrounding cities, like Su Zhou and Hang Zhou, are much more attractive.

I am sorry to hear that.
Next time you go to Shanghai, may be you should ask marchpole for suggestions. I think he knows a lot about the Greater Shanghai Metro Area.

Have you visited Chongming Dao and Hengsha Dao? Both are parts of Shanghai but no tall buildings and no traffic jams. Instead you'll find modern countryside with crop fields as far as the eye can see and environmental friendly commercial farming next to family run vacation lodges and camps.

How about starting with the Bund?

"The Bund is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Shanghai. ... The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, ..."

Let me add one more:
Anyone visiting Shanghai this year between May 1 and October 31 should allow two days or more (one day is definitely not enough) to enjoy the Shanghai EXPO 2010. In fact, anyone going to China for any reason this year should include the EXPO as part of their itinerary.

Thanks for the suggestions. What I really want to see is something "green" like the Central Park in New York City or some historical sites like Forbidden City in Beijing. Shanghai does not have either of them. Even worse, Shanghai is a plain modern city without much cultural roots. Huangpu River seems to the only place within the city that I can enjoy (when it is night time). I'm not one of those in favor of gigantic modern cities no matter how advanced they are. I like a small, green, culture-rich town much better.

I will visit China for the whole May and June this year. Believe it or not, I booked my tickets and specifically avoided Shanghai because Shanghai will be even more crowded during the EXPO. I wish China spend more resources on improving people's living standard instead of on these "face" and "show off" projects.

Many of these projects help improve people's standards because they provide jobs building them, and jobs once they are used and to maintain them.....plus if China or any developing country is going to learn how to make infrastructure for 2050, she has to start gaining experience now

It is true. It is also true that any projects that need manpower will create jobs. That does not justify if the money is wisely spent.

Back to topic, can anyone who knows about Shanghai enlighten me why Shanghai is attractive? I can only smell two things in Shanghai: concrete and greed. Did I mention that the native Shanghainese are the stingiest people I've ever seen? Let me tell you a true story. I know a couple who are from Shanghai and are living in Washington DC area. Last time when they planed to visit China, they booked two tickets which were on two different dates. Why didn't they go together? Because if they go together, they will have to buy two bus tickets and carry all the luggage to the airport. They go on different dates so one of them can drop off the other one at the airport and buy only one bus ticket to the airport. By going through all the trouble and traveling separately, they saved about $25 comparing to taking a taxi.

There is no Central Park in Shanghai. Bur there are C. Y. Forest Park, Shiji Park, Shanghai Botanical Garden etc.
There is only one Forbidden City in the world, so don't expect to find that in Shanghai. What Shanghai does have and the rest of the world doesn't is the site of the first plenary session of Communist Party of China. It is a museum now and there are quite a lot to see. It is, without exaggeration, how today's China started 89 years ago in a very very humble way.

Creating jobs, getting infrastructure in place plus building patriotism is quite well spent money. Not every project needs be measured in monetary terms alone
