United Arab Emirates seeks to recruit 3000 Colombian soldiers: Report

The United Arab Emirates is seeking to enlist 3,000 Colombian soldiers in the oil-rich Arab country's armed forces, weekly Semana reported Sunday.

According to the weekly, 842 Colombian soldiers and retired soldiers have already joined the UAE army which is paying salaries up to ten times what the Colombian state pays the members of its armed forces.

The transfer of soldiers to the foreign army is causing unease among Colombia's military commanders because the military fears the higher salaries abroad are draining the army of its best men and women.

"They have recruited soldiers with a lot of combat experience, valuable men with years of service in which the Army invested a lot in terms of training," an anonymous general told Semana.

"Without a doubt, this is a loss for the army, but there isn't much we can do because it is by no means illegal," the military official added.

According to the weekly, the Colombians are making in between $2,800 and $18,000 in the UAE depending on the rank. In Colombia, a soldier earns $530 a month on average.

The New York Times reported in May 2011 that the UAE hired Colombian soldiers as mercenaries through a company led by Erik Prince, the founder of controversial private security company Blackwater.

According to a Colombian former colonel -- now in charge of recruiting compatriots for the UAE Army -- the 800 Colombians currently active in the Arab peninsula are not part of a mercenary army, but hired directly by the armed forces.

"What is happening now is different than before. We are no mercenaries. The contract of the people who travel is directly with the government of the [United] Arab Emirates," the anonymous colonel said.

The Colombian ex-official said the UAE are investing in their military defense because the government "noticed that several threats have made them vulnerable."

According to the former colonel, the Colombians' responsibilities "range from urban defense against terrorist attacks to the control of civil uprisings and even be prepared for a possible border conflict with Iran."

The United Arab Emirates is one of the few countries in the Middle East that has not been affected by the "Arab spring," a wave of revolutionary social unrest that forced four rulers in the region from power.

is this an stamp and an acknowledgement that no Arab in the uae ever works or will never work, but will hire people from other countries to do the work for them - on all levels??

Pakistan missed a trick here. we should have offered 3 thousand trained soldiers from our reserve force/retired force. Not only would it take 3000 lower ranking soldiers off the books, it would help buy further influence in an Arab country and generate revenue as the soldiers would send money back home to their families probably. I suppose you'd have to consider the cost of training a jawan in the picture and whether the influence/presence purchased by this move was worth it.

Pakistan missed no trick here, let the Emiratis hire who ever they want fight for them. We have own battles to fight and win inside Pakistan, in Afghanistan and in Siachen.

Thats the thing, who are the emirati's going to fight? Nobody, it's easy money. Obviously not on a government level, but certainly on an individual level.

Plat, brother, it's a preparation for war in the Middle East (Syria, Israel, Iran, Turkey). Expect more foreign troop recruitment, a lot of which, won't be disclosed to the public.

You guys are missing the point. This has nothing to do with Arab bravery. Its about the lack of trust the sheikhs have in the locals. You see the sheikh knows and fear, like the rest of the gulf countries, that the local one day could go against them.

Again let me point out that these soldiers are not going to fight, life and die for the UAE. Their main objectives would be to protect the interest of the Sheikhs. In other words they'll act as personal body guard for the Sheikhs. Now the Sheikhs can enact any ruling they want knowing they are protected by people who are not directly effect by it. So before you say that they are pathetic, think twice. Remember these people hold positions in society that can be only achieved through shoordness, cleverness, and treachery.

This is a smart strategy for a small state standing against the aggression of a much larger state that occupies some of its lands.

This sends out a message to the grand ayatoshaitan of Tehran that just as easy as they can hire mercenaries from Russia or Lebanon, UAE can hire mercenaries from anywhere.

If thats the case, UAE wouldn't had active military forces present in Afghanistan now.

They are mercenaries.IF ever the people rise up, the millitary/police will most probably side with them and not shoot the protesters.
These mercenaries will do the job.

UAE isn't Libya.

In Bahrain there were no "people rising up". It was IRGC gangsters stirring trouble and launching propaganda to bring down the monarch who happens to be a reformist.

here is a prime example of the "massacres" made by Saudi and Bahraini forces against "innocent civilians"
