Sweden pledged to defend Norway



Sweden gave a secret pledge to fight for NATO if Norway were to be attacked, writes Svenska Dagbladet

During a NATO exercise in the autumn to Sweden have promised to add three of the Swedish Air Force Gripen Jas-four divisions to protect Norway against a possible military attack, the newspaper said. It was about a total of 48 aircraft.

The Swedish ambassador to NATO Veronika Wand-Danielsson refers to a solidarity clause adopted in the Swedish parliament in 2009, which means that Sweden will not respond passively if a Nordic country or an EU country is attacked.

- We are a neighboring country so it was natural to offer what we could make available, she said SvD .

The news creates a stir in neutral Sweden, which has declared its alliance freedom. Sweden was not included when the Western defense alliance was formed in 1949, and have never since become NATO member.

In connection with a NATO meeting in Chicago 21 May denied then also Foreign Minister Carl Bildt that Sweden is approaching membership in the military alliance.

But in spite of the Swedish Foreign Minister's assurances that Sweden does not participate in NATO's defense, should Sweden have contributed during the alliance's training last fall. In Sweden, this information was classified, according to SvD.

It was during NATO's annual staff exercise "Crisis Management excercise" 19-26. last October, where it was practiced on a military defense of the member states that Sweden participated. During the exercise, Norway was attacked by the fictional country of Vineland.

Sweden and Finland were invited to participate in the exercise as a neighboring country. But while Finland has openly talked about his participation in CMX, the government Reinfeldt kept quiet about the Swedish participation, according to the newspaper.

NATO satisfaction
No real military units were deployed during the exercise, only fictional, but the exercise should have shown how difficult it was for NATO countries to send more military forces to come to Norway's assistance.

It was in this context, Sweden offered to send three of the four Air Force Gripen Jas-divisions.

That the non-aligned Sweden will be prepared to go to war, according to the newspaper have surprised many NATO allies. It cites anonymous sources who express great satisfaction over the decision.

Sweden has participated three times previously during the annual CMX-exercises, but then it has concentrated on crises and disasters, civil, and not a territorial defense.

Now why would anyone want to attack Norway? Only NATO bombs other countries and invades them. So is Sweden proposing that it would go head to head against NATO?

I think it's probably Sweden's way of hinting to NATO, that they are now ready to become a member of the organization!!

Is there a need for Sweden to join Nato?  I mean, rest of European countries are trying to flee Afghanistan as soon as possible.  Baycharay, they're having to keep mum in order not to humiliate and offend America.

I have to disagree on this point because I have been taught with this information when i went at elementary school that, Norway had heavy water from the mountains, at a time when hitler's nazi germany was preparing for possesing nuclear technology and nuclear weapons.

The water was transported from the North Sea to denmark, and loaded on trains to germany.
Hitler knew that if the nazi ships passed the North Sea  towards germany, the allied forces could attack from the Eastern british sea areas, thus creating a naval barrier and halting the nazi nuclear project.
Therefore trains were used instead in denmark.
But freedom fighters at that time, destroyed the infrastructure (rail lines for the trains) which halted the transportation of heavy water.

The heavy water was so precious for hitler's nazi germany, that the nazis knew the cold heavy moleculars in the natural enriched water from the Norwegian mountains, were able to cool down the heat which the atoms created.


The norwegian people weren't scared at all, they fought back and gave hitler an headache due to the norwegian freedom fighters fought side by side with the norwegian forces - against hitler's nazi forces.
Many nazi ships were sabotaged or drowned whenever the heavy water was tried to be transported to nazi germany.

And for the fact regarding oilproduction, Norway became an exporter of raw oil after the 1950s, meaning after the second world war - and hitler didn't have any much focus on raw oil production because he wanted to posses the nuclear technology as quick as possible to win over the allied forces.
I must be honest to say, i can't remember where hitler got the oil for his military vehicles or navy vessels.


A funny sidestory, a danish minister was got drunk by his norwegian minister, basically tricked him to drink over.
When he had no conciousness left, the norwegian minister persuaded the danish minister to sell the oil denmark possesed for 1 crowns. Obviously, the drunk danish minister didn't think because he wasn't himself and no awareness what was going on, so what happend was he said yes and sold the country's oil wealth for one danish crown! LOL
And norway has today most of the oilproduction and oilexports in Scandanavia, while Scotland - towards the Northwest - has neighbouring oil platforms in the rough sea. Sweden and denmark have few oil platforms and.

IIRC it was from Romania among others.

Hummm still I don't think sweden, Norway or any other Scanadavian countries have any strategic importance UNLESS Russia decided to invade them.

Thank you, i had a rough idea it was either a country East to Germany ie. Russia or a country in Southeast Europe, but hesitated in writing that.

russia is still demonized even if the Cold War is over. Few years ago Norway wanted to obtain radars from usa because Norway still saw russia a potentiel threat.

I've been to Norway and Sweden; - i have personally witnessed anti-radiation and nuclear-bomb proof bunkers intregrated with the building complexes people reside in.

Or signboards pointing direction to the nearest nuclear-bomb proof bunker if a bombardment occurs.

Norway and Sweden are the closest neighbouring countries and they both co-operate with nato. A nato that was made in the interests of the american govt. against the communist russia.
