Pakistan holds off on nuclear tests for now

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan CNN The Pakistani government appears to be backing off from earlier threats to carry out nuclear tests and instead opting for the path of diplomacy.

After receiving phone calls from British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President Bill Clinton urging resistance to testing a nuclear device, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is apparently moving away from Pakistans earlier announcement that a nuclear test could come within 24 hours.

I think we want to show to the world Pakistan is a responsible country, Sharif said. It can exercise restraint on itself. If India is doing this out of sheer madness ... we dont want to blindly follow suit.

Pakistan U.S. guessing about imminent nuclear test

The question is not if but when Pakistan will test, Khan told CNN in Islamabad.

Based on information from U.S. intelligence sources, CNN reported on Tuesday that Pakistan had completed preparations for a nuclear test and could proceed in a matter of hours if it decided to go ahead.

Western intelligence agencies... have no information on when a test might take place, Khan said on Wednesday. Intelligence agencies in the West are completely off the mark.

Pakistan reportedly detonates nuclear devices

After the test, Pakistan issued a statement saying it is ready to adapt a nuclear warhead to its newly tested longrange missile.

The specter of Pakistani nuclear tests was raised after its archrival, India, exploded five underground nuclear devices earlier this month. The United States and Britain have been pushing the Pakistanis not to respond in kind, a move they fear could set off an arms race in South Asia.

We are obviously engaged in a serious discussion with Pakistanis about their security in the aftermath of this decision by India to test, and how our relationship with them could be enhanced, said State Department spokesman James Rubin.

Pakistan Fires Back With Nuclear Tests

Pakistan has replied to India's recent round of nuclear tests with five underground explosions today in the desolate Chagai region in Baluchistan province barely 50 kilometers from the Iranian border. These tests--the first by the south Asian nation--come barely 2 weeks after India conducted its own series on 11 and 13 May.

The tests heighten the tension between the two countries, which have gone to war three times. Speaking on national television, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said "we have settled the score" with India, while Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared that the Pakistani tests "came as no surprise and have vindicated our nuclear stand."

The Pakistan Herald News Service says the devices were all fission bombs, and that three were less than a kiloton in force. The other two had yields of 12 and 25 kilotons, the service added. Reuters reports that the Australian Geological Organization registered Pakistan's nuclear tests as one explosion of 5 magnitude on the Richter scale. Sharif said that no radioactivity was released into the atmosphere, and that the yields were "as expected."

The news of the blasts came as the Indian Parliament was debating its own nuclear tests. Vajpayee told reporters "a new situation has been created and it will be taken into account in formulating our future policy" on nuclear testing. At the same time, Sharif declared a state of emergency in Pakistan because of the "hostile" actions of its neighbor.

Pakistan nuclear tests raise fears in Israel

JERUSALEM CNN The recent nuclear explosions by Pakistan and India have raised Israeli concerns that Iran may be the next to join the nuclear club, sending the arms race spilling over into the Middle East.

Israel is long believed to have a nuclear monopoly in this region. So Muslims are heralding Pakistans socalled Islamic bomb, which they say levels the playing field.

We were dreading the possibility of Israel dropping one nuclear bomb on Cairo or Baghdad or on Amman. says analyst Khalid Suleiman, Most Muslims will be satisfied seeing a Muslim country becoming nuclear.
