KARACHI: At least 12 people, including three women, were killed and 35 others, including two policemen, sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a rally against the demand for a separate Mohajir province on Tuesday. Violence gripped various city areas after the incident in which 40 vehicles and six shops were torched in the troubled old town areas.
The Awami Tehrik and the City Alliance, an alliance of various political groups including the PML-N, People's Aman Committee and others, had announced a rally from Lyari to the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday against the demand for the division of Karachi. The rally began from Cheel Chowk, Lyari, and when it reached near Jodia Bazar unidentified armed men suddenly opened fire on it. The incident soon escalated into a gun-battle between rival groups.
Panic engulfed the busiest commercial area in the city, as people ran from their shops and abandoned their vehicles to save their lives. However, 35 people, including women and children, sustained injuries in the crossfire.
Firing incidents were reported from Nava Lane, Denso Hall, Dhobi Ghat, Ranchore Line, Lea Market and Juna Market. Violence soon spread to various other localities in no time. It appeared as if the attack was part of a well-planned scheme to disrupt the law and order situation in the city, police said.
The armed miscreants also attacked shops and torched vehicles which were parked in Jodia Bazaar, Napier Road, Denso Hall and other violence-hit areas. The police had placed containers and barricades near Shaheen Complex and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road to stop the rally from entering the red zone area.
People were stranded in their offices till the evening in many areas and huge traffic jams were witnessed in the old parts of the city and beyond. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Range Shaukat Ali Shah said that when the rally reached near Jodia Bazar unidentified armed men resorted to aerial firing and violence soon spread to various localities of the old city.
He, however, said that a search operation was under way in the areas from where the rally was attacked and the situation had been brought under control. According to the police, at least 40 vehicles including a bus, 13 cars and 26 motorcycles besides six shops were burnt during the violence.
Contingents of the police and Rangers finally entered the disturbed areas to quell the violence and shift the injured to hospitals. Rescue teams were called and the injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Lyari General Hospital (LGH).
According to hospital sources, they received some 30 to 35 injured, of whom 12 succumbed to their bullet wounds.
The dead were identified as Iqbal, 50, Mohammed Yousuf, 43, Aijaz, 20, Manzoor, 30, Amna, 15, daughter of Abdul Rehman, Ghazala Batool wife of Badar Hussain, Sharifaan wife of Sher Zaman, Babar, Ghulam Yasin, Ramazan, Hasib and Abdul Ghani.
The injured included: Hawa, Noman, Noor Mohammad, Mohammad Sadiq, Bahadur Khan, Azeem, Rehmatullah, Mohammad Hussain, Khalid, Zulfiqar, Jamal and Amjad.Police sources said that most of the deceased were labourers who were working in the old city areas like Jodia Bazaar and Pan Mandi. The teenaged girl Amna lived in Kharadar and had gone to the troubled spot for shopping when she got caught in thr crossfire and died.
Ghazala Batool, an employee of the Pakistan International Airlines, was also residing in the same area and was heading for her home when she was hit and died of bullet wounds. Iqbal (50) was a security guard deputed at the CHK and he was heading for his home after ending his duty when he was caught in the crossfire and died.
Talking to The News, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nasir Aftab of District South confirmed the death of 12 people in the violence and added that the police had taken positions in the old city areas, where the incidents of violence had occurred.
On a query, SSP Aftab said that no permission was taken by the parties for bringing out the rally.
Later, the Rangers and police teams launched a search operation in the Lea Market and Napier Road areas from where the firing incidents were reported.
The Rangers raided the office of a certain political party in Ranchore Lane from where they had arrested four activists and also recovered arms from their possession.
The Awami Tehreek has called for a province-wide strike on Wednesday in protest against the killings.
Meanwhile, the situation in the old city areas was tense till the filing of this report.

KARACHI: Most of Sindh province shut down in protest on Wednesday against an attack by unidentified gunmen on a rally of the Awami Tehreek on Tuesday that killed around 12 people and left dozens injured, as well as the killing of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz secretary general Muzzafar Bhutto. Government and private institutions faced short attendance of employees due to non-availability of public transport.
Tension continued to prevail in Karachi on Wednesday due to a strike call by Awami Tehreek President Ayaz Latif Palijo as well as incidents of firing that killed five people and injured over a dozen others. Over 30 suspects, most of them political workers, were also apprehended during overnight raids in the city by Rangers and police.
Several parts of the city, including Lyari, parts of Old City area, Shah Latif, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir City, Bin Qasim, Pipri, Sacchal Goth, Safoora Goth, Maripur, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Hassan Square, remained tense due to firing despite heavy deployment of police and Rangers, which also caused suspension of commercial activities and transport.
Tension also engulfed surrounding areas of Gulistan-e-Jauhar where unidentified men resorted to heavy aerial firing. In another incident, a man, Abdul Samad, was shot dead in Paper Market, Kharadar area.
Over a dozen others were wounded, including a woman and minor girl, in Lyari, Orangi, Nazimabad, Mujahid Colony, Aansu Goth, Malir, Rabia City, Old City areas and Sacchal.
A passenger coach was set on fire near Lea Market. A clash between two groups in Malir City injured two people, while three others, including a minor girl, were injured in Nazimabad's Mujahid Colony.
Later, Rangers personnel cordoned off Mujahid Colony, detained six suspects and shifted them to an undisclosed location. During the raid, several people protested and threw stones at police mobiles and torched two motorcycles.
Over 30 people, most of them political workers, were apprehended during raids conducted by Rangers and police. Rangers sources said raids were conducted in Ramswami, Ranchore Lane, Napier Road, Musharraf Colony, Bhorapir, Garden and Lines Area, adding that a huge cache of weapons, including two anti-aircraft guns, 22 Kalashnikovs, 11 repeaters and around a thousand bullets, were also recovered.
Following the arrests, families of the detainees staged a protest against the arrests outside the Rangers Headquarters near Pakistan Chowk. Rangers personnel used batons on the protesters, including women, to disperse them, and stopped media personnel from coverage.
A joint investigation team, led by Karachi Additional IG Akhtar Gorchani, was also formed on the directives of Interior Minister Rehman Malik. The team comprises representatives of ISI, IB, FIA and Special Branch.
Meanwhile, AT and Jeay Sindh Qaumi Movement had called a strike across Sindh. Their leaders claimed over 200 of their workers were arrested during the peaceful strike and demonstrations across Sindh.
Lawyers' community also participated in the strike and Sindh High Court Bar Association Malir, Sukkur, Khairpur, Dadu, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Naushero Feroze, Hyderabad and other district bar associations boycotted court proceedings.
All big and small cities and towns remained closed across the province. Business and trading was disturbed in major parts of Karachi, while in interior Sindh, all government and private educational institutions also remained closed.

The unprovoked and deliberate attack on a peaceful rally called by the Awami Tehreek (AT) in Karachi on Tuesday against the Mohajir sooba (province) campaign resulted in 11 people being killed and dozens wounded. In addition, vehicles, shops and homes were set on fire. To add further grief, when the rally participants staged a sit-in to protest the attack, the gunmen returned and fired at the crowd again. The AT's rally had been joined by the banned People's Amn Committee and other Sindhi nationalist groups. The law enforcement agencies, which reportedly disappeared mysteriously from their duty of protecting the rally just before the attack began, arrived in strength after the attack and fired indiscriminately at the crowd, adding insult to injury. Far from restoring order, the law enforcers exacerbated the tragedy, fuelling greater anger amongst the survivors. The question of the role of the law enforcement agencies in this incident must be investigated and responsibility for the debacle fixed. What is strange about the whole affair is that if the ruling PPP was aware of the possibility of trouble at the rally, as their spokespeople are now claiming, why did they not take adequate security measures to prevent the loss of life and property?
The AT and other Sindhi nationalist groups in response called for a strike on Wednesday which, according to reports by the time these lines were being written, was almost complete in interior Sindh and at least partially successful in Karachi. The strike has been supported by the PML-N and PTI, which also condemned the killings. That led Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik to claim that Nawaz Sharif was conspiring with the Sindhi nationalists against the PPP. Reports say Maula Buksh Chandio had words with Rehman Malik in a cabinet meeting on the issue of what Chandio called his inappropriate statement. Chandio argued the PPP would have to return to its Sindhi constituency for votes in the next election and that the nationalists were their brothers. The exchange reflects the internal tensions in the PPP, with the federal and Sindh governments inclined to adopt a stance that smacks of either collaboration with or at the very least turning a blind eye to those responsible for the massacre. The finger of suspicion in this case too is pointed at the MQM, which also stands accused of being the moving spirit behind the Mohajir province campaign.
The incident recalls the massacre of May 12, 2007 in Karachi, on the occasion of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry's visit to the city, when processions coming to the airport to receive him were attacked and many lost their lives. Unfortunately that incident still begs investigation and closure. Arguably, if the perpetrators are the same set of forces, they must have been emboldened by being able to get away with the 2007 attack.
To add to the seething anger in interior Sindh, the discovery of the dumped body of Muzaffar Bhutto, Secretary General of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz, who had been missing since three months, has fired up the nationalists. After the controversy surrounding the death (allegedly by poisoning) of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz leader Bashir Qureshi not long ago, this kill and dump incident (reminiscent of what has been going on since long in Balochistan), is sure to arouse militant sentiment amongst the Sindhi nationalists. The latter are now openly accusing the PPP, with which they are rivals in wooing the same Sindhi constituency, of collaboration with the MQM against them. True or not, the accusation is indicative of tings to come. Unless the Karachi incident and the death of Muzaffar Bhutto (and Bashir Qureshi before him) are satisfactorily investigated and the perpetrators of these crimes brought to justice, Sindh faces the horrifying prospect of ethnic bloodshed in the days ahead. Given its strategic position in terms of having the main port and industrial commercial centre of the country on its shore, if Sindh explodes into ethnic conflict, the country's struggling economy could be reduced to a cadaver. The PPP in particular has to distance itself from any hint of collaboration with any forces bent upon provoking conflict in Sindh, whether in the form of the demand for the division of Sindh or what appears now to be a concerted campaign of repression against the Sindhi nationalists. Balochistan offers a salutary lesson in how repression only makes political conflicts worse. Let not Sindh go down the same road. *

Excellent post brother. I exactly share your thoughts. Our ancestors migrated from East Punjab. They sacrificed their lands, their relatives and simply everything they had to reach their destination Pakistan. When our ancestors arrived in Jhang the local population didn´t accept them as equal Pakistanis. A huge fight broke out between the migrants and the local population. Finally the locals accepted us. Despite we faced multiple odds we never ever considered ourselves as Muhajirs. We are patriotic Pakistanis and would sacrifice over and over again for our beloved Pakistan.

In the coming days and months, expect BLA/BRA to rally behind balochi issue.
ANP to talk of Pashtoon RIGHTSN
PPP and MQM fighting for Siraiki rights.
PML-N/Q will try to show punjabis how only they care about their rights.
MQM,PPP and PML-N calling for a Hazara province...while ANP will oppose this one.
AND LOOK AT THE PERFORMANCE OF ALL THESE MAGGOTS, ABSOLUTELY ZERO!!!!!!!!!
Now if all you EDUCATED JAHILS want to rally behind these morons, do it at your own peril.Know that you will only be weakening your own country.
Now as far as Muhajjir suba is concerned,it doesnt make any sense. How will making a separate province solve anything?lets say this hypothetical province made up for Karachi and Hyderabad does come into existence. Will that solve the hate crimes and voilence in Karachi OR make it worse?
MQM already rules Khi, they have no clout in sindhi or baloch neighbourhoods. How will this change anything? To me this is like creating an issue for the sake of it, just hate politics.
NOW, a more deeper question. Is it fair to Sindhis, for whom karachi has ALWAYS been a main city, a major center, for centuries to be separated from Sindh proper?Sindhis welcomed MUSLIM brothers into their lands because of a shared vision of an ISLAMIC republic, not a turf war.
Our people have a serious identity issue and these separatist politicians make it worse...these funded morons, and sometimes just plain corrupt/jahil parties will stoop to ANY level to get their point across.
GILANIS both sons got elected, even though they had cases against them, and are corrupt and inept. BUT their people chose them because they did work in MULTAN/BAHAWALPUR or the PPP vote bank.WHEN WILL WE GET OUT OF THIS MENTALITY OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
MQM does work in KHI, just to please their immediate vote bank and we hear praises.Shahbaz shareef builds overheads and ring roads in Lahore and hes a genius, Gilanis built Multan,Maybe ANP talks about KP...
WHERE IS THE NATIONAL VISION, WHERE IS THE CALL FOR OWNING ALL OF Pakistan.
No country in the world is without regional problems. Look at U.S., canada,Britain,Spain,France. People in a city fight about resources, but you dont try to rip your country apart for it.
Add Hazara to the name of KP, give them recognition and lets be done with that.
Add Siraiki to the Punjab name...
WHO DO YOU THINK WILL RULE THESE NEW PROVINCES ANYWAY? GILANIS IN SIRAIKI PROVINCE?MQM in Khi?who will they blame them?
I dont think Meccans asked for a Mecca district in Medina when they migrated, they learnt to live together.
We face so many problems yet our jahil awam and parhay likhay jahil are only concerned with this dramay bazi. And then we wonder why Pakistan is left so far behind.

EVERY community contributes to Pakistan, urban or rural, they all have a role to play.We need to have unity and get rid of hate and nepotism.
I totally agree, bring administration down to division level, 30-40 odd administrative levels and lelts see how these people perform then.
Education, city planning, power, sewage system, policing, judiciary should be down to division level. Leave only NATIONAL issues to the parliament and then we cant blame others for our ineptness. Also, if we chose our parliament wisely, there would be a more fair and benevolent distribution of resources, where the surplus goes to the struggling areas.

3576 criminal cases against Altaf, others withdrawn
KARACHI At least 83 corruption cases registered against 200 persons including Interior Minster Rehman Malik, Salman Farooqi, Sindh Minister Agha Siraj Durani, and other former bureaucrats and politicians have been withdrawn under the cover of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) in Sindh.
Moreover, a large number of the 3576 criminal cases registered against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, Dr Farooq Sattar, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad, and others were also withdrawn, invoking the NRO.
A list of the cases and the names of accused persons who benefited from the NRO provision in Sindh, has been sent to the federal government
which has already announced to unveil the list of the persons whose cases have been withdrawn.
A Sindh government official privy to the matter said that the majority of the beneficiaries include former bureaucrats and government officials.
Meanwhile, some of such bureaucrats continue to hold higher posts in the federal government while some are serving in the foreign service.
Official sources said that a total 83 of corruption cases pending in five Accountability Courts in Sindh-Karachi against 200 persons including politicians and former bureaucrats were withdrawn under NRO.
According to details, 43 corruption cases were withdrawn from Accountability Court (AC)-1, 22 from AC-2, 17 from AC-4 and one from AC-5.
The sources concerned confirmed that a small number of politicians benefited from NRO while the majority of such persons included former government officials, autonomous bodies chiefs and banks heads.
However, Sindh Minister for Local Government Department Agha Siraj Durani who falls in the category of politicians who benefited from NRO. The corruption case against him pending in Accountability Court has been withdrawn.
Mr Durani is considered as the close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari. After 2008 general elections, he was expecting to grab the slot of Sindh Chief Minister, but his name was dropped due to untold reasons.
Similarly, the name of Interior Minister Rehman Malik forms part of the list of the persons whose corruption cases have been withdrawn. A corruption case was pending in Accountability Court Karachi against Mr Malik in his capacity as former Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Others who benefited from NRO are: former President National Bank of Pakistan MB Abbasi, currently serving as Pak Ambassador in Iran, former bureaucrat Salman Farooqi, currently serving Principal Staff officer of President of Pakistan, Siraj Shamsul Hassan, a businessman Chaudhry Sharif, former bank president Younas Dalmia, former Vice-President of Habib Bank, Pir Didar Jan Sarhandi, former Secretary Board of Revenue of Sindh government, Ghulam Abbas Soomor and former official of Board of Revenue of Sindh Ramesh Odesi.
MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, MQM Parliamentary leader in National Assembly Dr Farooq Sattar and other party workers are some of the beneficiaries. The cases registered against them were withdrawn.
A NRO committee headed by Justice ® Ghous Muhammad and including former Advocate General Of Sindh Khawaja Naveed and Law Secretary Ghulam Nabi Shah had reviewed the criminal cases which were pending in courts against MQM leaders and workers of other political parties.
After a thorough review, the committee sent its recommendations to the then Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim for withdrawal of 3576 criminal cases under NRO. According to the sources, at least 95 per cent of the total criminal cases pertained to MQM leaders and workers. Such persons were nominated in the FIRs registered for torching vehicles during strike calls in the City.

It was Altaf Hussain who said that CREATION OF THE Pakistan IS THE BIGGEST BLUNDER OF THE HISTORY.right????

So long as we unite under one flag (Pakistan's Flag), one anthem (Pakistan's National Anthem), one faith (Islam) and stand for the rights of every fellow countryman (Pakistani) ....... we don't need any altaf, zardari, benazir, gilani, fazlur rahman, chaudhry, wali khan or nawaz.
........ the Black Flags Army shall rise from Khurasan and commence its earth rumbling march toward Damishque. Any force that tries to come in its path, shall be destroyed with ruthless destruction. Awaiting, upon reaching Damishque, the safron and beads of pearls and the Black Turban that shall lead the Salah of Fajr .........
........ the stones and trees of Lud shall cry out to the Black Flags and tell them of the Munafiqs, Yahuds and Kuffar that are hiding behind them, to come and kill them. That day shall be the day of reckoning, the day of justice, the day when no power shall hold and unfair advantage. The battle shall be fought and won by way of faith ........
........ it shall be done, as it is said "Kun Faya Koon

Whoever these idiots are should be thrown in jail. This is not East Pakistan where the Bengalis made the majority and acted own their emotions without looking from Islamic perspective that independence was the wrong thing to do.
