BoI provides business platform to Russia's Sukhoi
Tuesday, May 08, 2012
KARACHI: In an effort to strengthen bilateral trade relations between Russia and Pakistan, Board of Investment (BoI) facilitated the display of Sukhoi Super Jet (SSJ100) at an exclusive event held at Jinnah International Airport on Monday.
Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain honoured the event as chief guest while the respected members of Pakistan's Aviation Industry were also present on the occasion.
In his welcome address, Minister of State and BoI Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla said, "President Asif Ali Zardari's visit to Russia in May last year proved to be a turning point in relations between Russia and Pakistan and breathed a new life into bilateral ties. Presidents of the two countries agreed on cooperation in the sectors of agriculture, aviation and energy." He said since then BoI has been keen on seeking new areas of bilateral trade between the two countries and has taken the responsibility of playing the role of a catalyst in making it easier for the interested business representatives of Russia and Pakistan to collaborate on projects of mutual benefit. We appreciate Sukhoi's business interest in Pakistan's Aviation Industry and hope to take our business relations with Russia forward and in turn facilitate greater economic development.
Speaking at the event, Sukhoi Senior Vice President Igor Syrtsov said, "We feel honoured to have received such a warm welcome from the government of Pakistan, BoI and representatives of the aviation industry of this great country. Sukhoi is the leading aircraft manufacturing company of Russia. Our SSJ100 is matchless in terms of its technological capabilities, superior comfort and fuel efficiency. The leading-edge technologies, being the core ingredient of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 Project, are part of its every stage – from design and development to final assembly, delivering a modern, economically efficient and globally marketable aircraft. We hope to find business partners in Pakistan and strengthen our bilateral ties at the same time."
While addressing the distinguished guests, Dr Hussain said, "Today's event symbolises friendship between the two great countries of Pakistan and Russia. Sukhoi is a reputable aircraft manufacturer of Russia and we are grateful to them for showing interest in developing business partnership with Pakistani airline companies. Aviation is an important industry of Pakistan where several Pakistani airlines provide air transit facilities to general public as well cargo transportation within and outside Pakistan and have a high level of demand especially during the holiday season. In order to maintain a satisfying level of demand, it is imperative for the local carriers to provide reliable service and a safe trip and this can only be made possible if they acquire and maintain high-quality of air fleet."
The event concluded on a positive note with exchange of warm words and a hope that such initiatives will pave way for new opportunities for bilateral trade and investment between the two countries. The fact that Russia has already shown interest in oil and gas exploration in the region is an encouraging sign in this context and will help the governments and businessmen of both the countries to realise economic prospects of mutual benefit in near future. staff report
