KABUL: US President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday signed a strategic partnership accord that charts the future of US-Afghan relations beyond the end of the NATO combat mission in the country.
Obama, on an unannounced visit to Kabul, acknowledged that there will be difficult days ahead for Afghanistan, but said the Afghan people were taking control of their own future.
"The wages of war have been great for both our nations," Obama said, adding that he looked forward to a future of peace.
The two leaders shook hands after the signing, which took place in Karzai's palace in the Afghan capital. (Reuters)

At least six people were killed in an early morning suicide attack Wednesday in the Afghan capital.
A series of blasts hit Kabul, hours after a surprise visit to Afghanistan by President Barack Obama, government officials said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was a response to Obama s visit.
A series of explosions and gunfire rang out in eastern Kabul at around 6 a.m. near a private armed compound that houses hundreds of international workers. Shooting continued for hours and it was not clear later whether the attack was finished, as another large explosion sounded around 8 a.m. from inside the complex known as Green Village.
An Afghan police official said two suicide attackers were still inside Green Village and were "resisting." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
One of the first blasts was a suicide car bomb that exploded near Jalalabad road one of the main thoroughfares out of the city, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi. A station wagon that was driving past was caught up in the explosion and four people inside were killed, Sediqi said. A passer-by and a security guard for a nearby building also were killed.
The explosions happened hours after Obama left Afghanistan after a quick visit to mark the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden s death. He spoke to troops and signed a pact with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to govern the U.S. presence in Afghanistan through 2024.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was planned Tuesday night as a response to Obama s trip.
"This is a reaction to Obama s visit to Afghanistan," Mujahid said, without elaborating. He said the target was a "foreign military base."
NATO forces spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff said there were no indications that any NATO bases were under attack.
The Green Village complex, with its towering blast walls and heavily armed security force, is very similar in appearance to NATO bases in the city. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw a group of Afghan soldiers enter the Green Village compound, after which heavy shooting could be heard coming from inside.
Outside the complex, men could be seen carrying a wounded man covered with blood, apparently pulled out of the flames engulfing a nearby car.
"These people evacuated a man from the burning car, two bodies are laying there now and three or four other victims were evacuated from the school," said Ahmad Zia, a resident who saw the explosion.
Green Village was also the target of anti-foreigner protests following the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base in February. At that time, violent protests raged outside, but the angry crowds did not breach the compound s defenses

Taliban dismiss US-Afghan pact, announce ‘spring offensive’
KABUL: The Taliban on Wednesday dismissed a new strategic pact signed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his US counterpart Barack Obama as “illegitimate”.
The two presidents signed the deal to govern Afghan-US relations after foreign combat troops withdraw in 2014 in Kabul during a brief visit by Obama.
In a statement posted on the Voice of Jihad website, the militants, who have waged a bloody insurgency since a US-led invasion toppled them from power in 2001, said Karzai was not authorised to sign the document.
The Taliban “deems this document the selling-document of Afghanistan by a powerless puppet (Karzai) to his invading master and condemns it in worst possible terms”, the statement said.
The Taliban “as the true representative of the Islamic nation of Afghanistan with all its strength will continue to its armed Jihad (holy war) against all the contents of this illegitimate document until the full withdrawal of all invading forces and their puppets from Afghanistan”, it added.
Earlier on Wednesday – the first anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden by US special forces – Taliban bombers attacked a heavily fortified guesthouse complex near Kabul used by Western groups including the European Union and UN.
Seven people were killed in the attack, which the Taliban said was staged to mark the start of their annual “spring offensive”.
Moreover, the Taliban announced earlier today their “spring offensive” that is they say will begin across Afghanistan on Thursday.
Code-named al Farouq, the primary targets of the offensive would be “foreign invaders, their advisors, their contractors, all those who help them militarily and in intelligence”, the militants said on their website.
“Al Farouq spring offensive will be launched on May 3 all over Afghanistan,” the militant group said.
The militia said the code name came from Islam’s second caliph, Omar al Farouq known for his military advances in Asia and the Arab world during the seventh century.
The rebel group said it will adopt new tactics to “safeguard” civilians as part of the new offensive.
“New and tested war tactics will be implemented in the Al-Farouq operation and top priority will be given to safeguarding the lives and wealth of civilians”, the statement said.
The United Nations said civilian deaths from the Afghan conflict reached a record high of 3,021 in 2011, mostly at the hands of insurgents, up eight per cent from 2,790 in 2010.
The militants also said a committee will be assigned to “invite” members of the Afghan security forces to join their insurgency, which is now into an 11th year.

Ten years later and the Americans still do not have the guts to pre-announce their leaders' state visit to Afghanistan. What cowards.
