SLAMABAD (AP) — An avalanche smashed into a Pakistani army base on a Himalayan glacier along the Indian border on Saturday, burying around 100 soldiers, the military said.
Helicopters, sniffer dogs and troops were deployed to the remote Siachen Glacier to rescue those trapped, according to a military statement.
The avalanche hit a battalion headquarters in the glacier's Gayari sector at 5:45 a.m, according to a security official who didn't give his name because he is not an official spokesman.
Siachen is on the northern tip of the divided Kashmir region claimed by both India and Pakistan.
Both countries station hundreds of troops there, who brave viciously cold temperatures, altitude sickness and high winds for months at a time. Troops have been deployed at elevations of up to 6,700 meters (22,000 feet) and have skirmished intermittently since 1984. The glacier is known as the world's highest battlefield.
More soldiers have died from the harsh weather there than combat.

ISLAMABAD — An avalanche smashed into a Pakistani army base on a Himalayan glacier close to India on Saturday, burying around 130 soldiers, a security official said.
Rescue efforts are under way on the remote and frigid Siachen Glacier, where thousands of Pakistani and Indian troops are based, the security official said. He spoke anonymously because the military had yet to release a formal statement.
He said the snow hit a battalion headquarters in the glacier's Gayari sector at 5:45 a.m.
Siachen is on the northern tip of the divided Kashmir region claimed by both India and Pakistan.
The two neighboring countries have deployed troops at elevations of up to 22,000 feet there. There have been intermittent skirmishes since 1984, and the region is known as the world's highest battlefield.
More soldiers have died from the harsh weather there than combat.

It was a battalion HQ with an attached company of soldiers. This is the reason for such a large number.
I hope that most of them are saved as the chances of being found decreases with increase in time.

However, I don't know know why it happened.
In western countries the snow level is monitored on mountains and if required an artificial avalanche is created using small explosions so that excess snow is removed from the mountains in order to reduce the chances of avalanches.
I don't know if PA has such a practice because before creating an artificial smaller avalanche the location of human population is taken into consideration (which in this case is the location of the camp from the mountains).

Yea but Risk Assessments are not just a one of thing; it requires doing periodically. It becomes even more important when you are in a hostile environment such as glaciers.

Yes, off course. Data about the weather is obviously updated periodically as its a standard operating procedure in the armies around the world and more so in siachin because the air pressure, temperature e.t.c affect how a unit operates. Special lubricants, fuels and materials are also used in siachin because of the climate there.

People with trekking and mountaineering experience will vouch, that in those altitudes, winds and weather conditions can change in minutes. Impossible to predict mother nature's patterns there. And one is talking of Siachen here. Its a miracle there are soldiers manning those posts. Letting go of explosions would require clearances from both sides, lest they be taken as aggressive maneuvers. Only thing that can be done is strengthen infrastructure and provide for increased survivability through rations and clothing.
RIP.

I certainly agree with you on that. What I meant was that both countries need to realize that by making it a battlefield, they have achieved nothing and lost many precious lives. India, of course, needs to take the first step as she did by occupying the glacier.

The logic that it is Pakistani territory is the Pakistani point of view. Indian point of view is that entire region is Indian territory. Both are stands to which we can keep arguing till time's end. Indian troops will not back down from Siachen for the next 10 years atleast. No point in me saying anything further, cause it will de-rail the topic. Let's not discuss this in this thread.
Blue, as far as I am concerned a dead man is a dead man. He cannot be classified into any living category. (Indian, Pakistani, brown, white, red etc etc). As an ex-military man, I would assume, you no that better than most people in this forum.

What every sympathy I had for there mother.######.er indians ive lost that after this incident. To test the waters I went and read the comments on Indian papers, CNN and Washington Post and these Mother. ######.ers are celebrating our loss.......
If we take our inspiration and guidance from the Holy Qur’an, the final victory, I once again say, will be ours… Do not be overwhelmed by the enormity of the task… You only have to develop the spirit of the Mujahids. You are a nation whose history is replete with people of wonderful character and heroism. Live up to your traditions and add to another chapter of glory. All I require of you now is that everyone… must vow to himself and be prepared to sacrifice his all… in building up Pakistan as a bulwark of Islam and as one of the greatest nations whose ideal is peace within and peace without… Islam enjoins on every Mussulman to give protection to his neighbors and to minorities regardless of caste and creed.
