My computer had been infected with rootkit malware. It kept redirecting my searches (or saying "Bad Gateway") in Firefox or Chrome. It took a few hours, but I fixed the problem.

If you use Windows and have a similar problem, you might want to try the free Rootkit removal software from Kaspersky.



1. Go to the Kaspersky web page at Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

2. Follow the directions in the red box that I highlighted for you (in the picture above).

3. I had clicked on the green "TDSSKiller.zip" hotlink.

4. I saved the file TDSSKiller.zip into a folder on my computer.

5. I extracted the actual program from the compressed zip file by using WinRAR. I downloaded my copy of WinRAR a long time ago. I think you can download an upgraded version here at http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

6. After decompressing the "TDSSKiller.zip" file by running WinRAR, I pulled the actual TDSSKiller.exe file into a folder and ran it.

7. I selected the option of "deleting" or "curing" my two infections.

8. My computer became infection free and it's running very smoothly.

I moved to Ubuntu/Linux Mint ages go (about 6 years if memory serves correct). Never had to install an anti-virus. A trouble free experience so far. Haven't formatted my hard disk even it so stable and flexible.

Download the live CD/DVD for both of these OSs and run have the BIOS settings to load from the CD/DVD drive. Your computer will simply load the entire OS into its RAM from the live CD and give you a taste as to what it can offer. Also, this would not require you to format your hard drive or get rid of your Windows.
