(Reuters) - Two U.N. peacekeepers from Pakistan have been sentenced to a year in prison for raping a 14-year-old Haitian boy after being convicted in a Pakistani military trial in Haiti, authorities said on Monday.
U.N. spokeswoman Sylvie Van Den Wildenberg said judges from a Pakistani military tribunal came to the impoverished Caribbean nation to hold the trial that resulted in the conviction last week of the peacekeepers. They were found guilty in the rape of the boy in the northern city of Gonaives on January 20.
The two soldiers, who have not been identified by name, were summarily discharged from the military and sentenced to a year behind bars in their homeland, the U.N. spokeswoman said.
"The U.N. was informed last week by the Pakistani officials about the verdict, but MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti) did not have any involvement in the military judicial process that was led by military judges from Pakistan," she added.
It was the first time that members of the U.N. military on deployment in Haiti have been tried and sentenced within its borders.
The U.N. peacekeeping mission has faced a growing image problem in Haiti, with some of its members accused of responsibility for introducing a deadly cholera epidemic in earthquake-stricken country in 2010.
Several peacekeepers have also been accused of rape, in addition to the Pakistanis, in cases that have fueled public protests and demands that members of the U.N. force be stripped of their immunity and face trial in Haitian courts.
Haitian Justice Minister, Michel Brunache called the verdict for the two Pakistanis a "small" step in the right direction.
"We expected more from the U.N. and the Pakistani government, but now we want to focus on the proper reparation that the victim deserves," Brunache said.
Haitian government authorities were given no advance notice of the military tribunal, he said.

probably wouldn't even make it to the news. God knows the contracters that were/are running around engaged in what sort of sordid behavior.
But you're right for the crime commited, the punishment is hardly commenurate. Though in all fairness I appreciate the fact that PA moved on it's own volition to try the perpertrators in the home country, without being cajoled or pressured into doing the right thing, but a year of getting jail raped without condoms, hmm, karma perhaps?

I agree. We would have been calling for death penalty had the shoe been on the other foot.
In this case I would call for death and nothing less, we amended our law to make a mandatory death penalty for child abusers. They deserve no less, there is no excuse for their behavior.

yeah am surprised too. a year for rape? to a 'muslim' soldier, from 'ISLAMIC' republic of Pakistan. Do you even know whats Islamic punishment for it? Plus, on humanitarian grounds, what should be the punishment for a soldier who is presumably there to protect you?

3 Pakistani police officers found guilty of sex exploitation of 14-year-old in Haiti

March 13, 2012|By Joe Vaccarello, CNN
Three Pakistani police officers were found guilty of sexual exploitation and abuse of a 14-year-old Haitian boy while they were serving in a U.N. police mission in Haiti, a U.N. spokesman told reporters Tuesday.
The three were found guilty in a court-martial proceeding conducted by Pakistani authorities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, said the spokesman, Martin Nesirky.
Pakistani authorities alerted Haitian officials to the outcome of the military procedure this month, saying that "the guilty parties will be punished, including dishonorable discharge from service, loss of benefits and imprisonment, with the latter sentence to be served immediately on return to Pakistan." Each is to serve a year in jail.
The three were in a Pakistani-formed police unit serving in Gonaives, Haiti, as part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake there in January 2010. The attack happened this January.
The three officers have been sent back to Pakistan. The U.N. spokesman said the international body is in contact with Pakistani authorities to "examine the formal details of the procedures and to ensure appropriate follow-up."
Asked by a reporter if the one-year sentence was appropriate for the crime, Nesirky responded, "The United Nations will not comment on the terms of the punishment under the member-states, the judicial procedure. That's obviously a matter between Pakistan and Haiti, but as we stated from the outset, the United Nations considers this to be a case of the most serious sexual exploitation and abuse."
In a separate case, five Uruguayan marines were accused last year of sexually assaulting a teenager at a U.N. base after a video was posted on the Internet. That case is still under investigation.
