ISLAMABAD: On the advice of Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani, President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Air Marshall Tahir Rafique Butt as the new Air Chief.

According to the Presidential spokesman, Butt will assume charge as the new Air Chief on March 19.

Prime Minister GIlani had advised President Zardari to appoint Butt as he was the most senior Air Marshall.

Butt will succeed Air Chief Rao Qamar Suleman.

It is safe to infer he's a capable PPP a.ss kisser at least.
It is safe to infer he's potentially capable of letting the nation down at the helm of an organization that has till recently repeatedly let the nation down.
Of course on the flip side he's potentially capable of surprising us and make us proud once again of PAF but I wouldn't be holding my breath--unless in the case of more B.S emanating from the head of the PAF after some another future debacle/security lapse in defending air space violations.

Tahir Butt new Air Chief

ISLAMABAD - On the advice of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Air Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt as the new Chief of the Air Staff of Pakistan Air Force.

According to the presidential spokesman, Tahir Butt will assume charge as the new Air Chief on March 19th.

Prime Minister Gilani had advised President Zardari to appoint Butt as he was the most senior Air Marshal. Butt will succeed Air Chief Rao Qamar Suleman.

Air Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt born in 1955 received his early education at PAF Public School, Sargodha.  He joined PAF and graduated from PAF Academy, Risalpur in March 1977. After doing his fighter and operational conversion courses, he has flown various types of fighters and training aircraft on PAF Inventory.

He is a qualified flying instructor and also a combat commander on fighters.

He has commanded an elite fighter squadron, a Fighter Flying Wing and two PAF Bases.

In senior staff assignments, the Air Marshal has the distinction of having served as Director General National Accountability Bureau (KPK), Commandant National Security College, NDU, Air Officer Commanding Southern Air Command and Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Personnel). Currently, he is serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff.

He is a graduate of Staff College, Turkey and National Defence University, Islamabad from where he did his MSc in Defence and Strategic Studies.
He is married and blessed with three children.

In recognition of his meritorious and exceptionally dedicated services, he has been decorated with the awards of Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military), Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Tamgha-i-Basalat.

Monitoring Desk adds: Outgoing PAF Chief Rao Qamar Suleman is likely to be appointed as Managing Director of PIA, reported a private TV channel.

    I wouldn't make any irresponsible comments like PPP "ass licker" etc. I know it has become a fashion in the country that anyone who gets a higher appointments is deemed to be a Govt favourite. It is true that the air chief is selected by the Govt but unlike the civil, anyone in the Air Fore who has achieved a rank of air marshal has gone through the drill and is a  capable man. In any case unlike the Civilians, the armed forces are a complete democratic set up. The Chief does no decide on his own nor does he take dictaion from the Govt as far as the PAF is concerned. Same is true abut the Army where the chief consults the Corpse Commanders about all aspects of the service. If you recall that Kaleem Saadat kept on resisting the Govt's pressure to buy Mirage 2000 since it was not considfered suitable and cost effective. The Govt openly desired for their cut in the sale. In any case he is the senior most air marshall I don't know  the new chief but am quite confident about the system of command in the PAF.

its an open fact that rao qamar's appointment was politically motivated, better men were there yet he was chosen. ask anyone from the air force circles and they'll testify. the system in the armed forces might be more 'democratic' yet in a half a million strong organization, 5,6  'wrong' decisions are made annually, some even costing the nation's honor..   i wont expect much from mr butt, unless ofc he shows some 'manhood'

The fact that he now is MD of PIA leaves no doubt about that.

PAF has lost its glory, its reputation, its edge, you name it. Test of pudding is in the taste and till it proves otherwise, I would consider it sour. PAF is no more symbol of pride for the nation. Flight instructor of this that, graduate of there and there, famous for this and that. All bakwas till it works where it is supposed to work.
A few days ago, there was a statement in news "Pakistan air force @ its height of operational readiness" We've become a joke. PAF as an organization spends billions of tax payer's funds only to ashame them in the need of hour. When time comes, PAF is telling us "oh they were escorted by F-15s" oh our radars were sleeping (I used to have a poster over my bed's headside "sleep well Pakistan Air Force is awake") and no no its political decission to shoot down drones, oh its ok to kill our soldiers @ salala by some foot long bullets shot by C-130s and apachis. PAF keeps begging to AmriKunts to stop shooting for straight 2 hours while our spanking new F-16s sleep tight when the whole nation is awake and bullets riddle our sons.

What a pathetic state of once honourable institution. I pitty these young pilots and pitty these brass clad good for nothing, coward Air Chiefs. I ask you, whats the legacy of last CAS? Cowardice in the face of enemy. Bastard should be hanged.

shooting is an extreme measure, the drones can be escorted , intercepted etc as well,,

bottom line is they're all in agreement, drone strikes a few miles in can be justified by the military but a proper ground invasion by Us/Nato will make the brass look like fools, for this very reason, there have been only a handful few ground incursions if none at all in the past decade.. the agreement is for air strikes / not boots on ground, the  blood ( cheap ) of a few Pakistani soldiers spilled here and there doesn't matter much anyway ( as eagle pointed )

Boys grow up to be men (unless they're heads of the various military branches--in that case they grow up to be gori chamri worshipping w.hores), boyhood dreams loose their luster, the once idealistic and innocent hearts trudge onwards to a sanctum of a cynical bosom.  That is life my friends, the military heads, the political heads have always put up the same facade, and as generations grew up and realized what the realities were they either resigned themselves to the prevalent filth in the corridors of power, the halls of "wisdom", and the pulpits of salvation, or left for foreign lands, very few struggled to challenge and change the system.  That is our biggest collective illness and what we see is merely the symptoms of a timid, meek, and selfish society where the attempts at improving ones standing in society is based, not on social service and improving the lot of the collective, rather to raise ones standing by pushing down those around themselves.
