Because it is not the most advanced chopper yet, so there is no reason for China to build plenty of it.

For now, China's primary goal is to overtake US by quality, not quantity.

Same for the scenario of type 094 SSBN, there are only 4 ships because it is not as sophisticated as the latest models of the Ohio class.

this IOC batch will probably go through 2-3 years of rigorous testing, and have a radar place on top of the rotors as in the AH-64D
the chinese don't want to have a massive fleet of slightly better models, they will only produce when the product meets requirements
they are playing catch up and pass, commanche level performance, IMHO, is their goal , but not as much stealthy (no internal bays)

In addition to the millimeter wave fire control radar and optronic FCS, pilots of WZ-10 has another FCS, the helmet mounted sight (HMS) designed by the 613th Research Institute. The HMS is standard for WZ-10, and it is fully integrated into the overall FCS. The HMS of WZ-10 is based on the earlier HMS used on WZ-9, which was first shown at the 5th Zhuhai Airshow held at the end of 2004. The photos of HMS of WZ-10 begun to appear on the Chinese website in 2008, and more information followed. At the 7th Zhuhai Airshow held at the end of 2008, the developer confirmed that the HMS is not only fully integrated into the FCS, but also integrated to onboard navigational system as well. Although the navigational info can be displayed on the MFD, pilots can also fly WZ-10 on their own, without using the navigational system onboard. This is achieved by using night vision goggles (NVG), which the HMS is fully compatible. The HMS of WZ-10 can control both the air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, working in exactly the same way 613th Research Institute’s HMS for jet fighters (which was first shown to the public at the very 1st Zhuihai Airshow in 1996)."

this is fantasic news even Apache does not carry stingers on routines missions, this WZ19 attack helo looks very good and promising

AH-64D and WZ-10 both can carry  A-2-A missiles like AIM-92 and PL-9 etc

Anti helicopter and anti tank missiles must be very similar to A2A ones in some ways......all 3 must have speed as paramount so enemy can't get lock on you or fire off countermeasures, and explosive destruction power also seems a necessity

dont see why they cant dogfight, i mean they carry air-to-air missiles so they can chase each other until one gets shot down, isnt that the reason why Apache carrys the Stinger?

This (WZ-19) is a light (4 tons) reconnaissance & attack helicopter akin to Japan's OH-1.



WZ-10 is a mid-weight(6 tons) dedicated attack helicopter.

China is also reported to be working on a heavy (10 tons WZ-20?) attack helicopter.

The cockpit design is much similar to AH1

The Wz-19 seems more suited for Pakistan because its similar to the Cobra. The PA loves the Cobra. Plus it looks from the design that the WZ-19 shares components with the Z-9 so would be more convenient to maintain.

WZ-10 does not match US Apache engine IR suppression


China's WZ-10 needs engine exhaust parallel infrared suppressors to match US Apache design.

We are back to the same problem with the J-20. The only major weakness on the J-20 is the lack of a F-22 class engine to provide sufficient thrust to offset heavy 2D jet engine nozzles.

Similarly, the WZ-10 cannot be equipped with infrared suppressors until an engine that matches current Apache performance is ready.

China can build engines, but the new super high-performance prototypes are still being tested. They won't be ready for a few more years. Without reliable super high-performance engines to offset the weight and efficiency penalties, the WZ-10 will not have engine infrared suppressors and the J-20 will not have flat 2D engine nozzles.

China's new WZ16 1,500 kW or 1,700 shp (shaft horsepower) turboshaft engine is under development


New WZ16 engine can be installed on the WZ-10 in the future.


WZ16 engine specifications include 1,700 shp (shaft horsepower). I think the sign says it'll be ready by 2013.
