Business sense, it doesn't make sense (Pakistan). Our society has always projected women to be inferior to men, and hence the perception of a female anchor; not-so-credible journalism.

Credibility of a male anchor is higher, hence public watches the channels with male anchors. However a "modern" and educated female anchor, teamed with a male anchor will be a more credible and reliable channel. A female anchor with a hijab does not make business sense.

However, the Pakistani perception is changing gradually. If the TV Channels see it as acceptable business sense for them, then you will see hijaban anchors in the future.

My In-laws are ….?


It’s amazing that as soon as you mention the word, only ill thoughts come to most people. This topic was previously viewed in a positive light as it strengthened family ties but unfortunately today it is considered negatively in both Muslim and non-Muslim circles. How did these issues develop within our family system and how did this negative stigma make it into our community. To understand this issue and to change our thinking we must look at how marriage and In-laws are related.
This issue has been creeping into our system from our cultural baggage instead of being something Islamic. We are living in a mixture of times where we indulge in just as much culture (if not more) as we indulge in Islamic principles and teachings regarding family relations. Below are some of the causes of why In-laws got such a bad reputation;
1. Living Together
Living together in a family system causes many problems. And this is probably one of the biggest problems that causes the In-Law syndrome in our community. This is a common practice to live together and all people do is tell others about their bad experiences. As they say when you do a hundred good things to someone and then you do one bad thing they will only remember the bad. So overtime with all the compilations of all the bad stories from a joint family system we got a big monster of In-Law (mainly Mother in Law). Why does this happen. Because just like you can’t have two kings in one castle you can’t have two queens either.
2. Mine and Yours
The mindset of mine and yours. This is another reason why society deals with In-law situation in a negative manner because we compare our situation and there’s in a negative light every chance we get. Every weird or abnormal thing we point out to, not only each other, but others as well.
3. Society
Social jokes that surround In-laws don’t help. This is throughout all cultures no matter where you are from. In conversation or in the media these jokes are everywhere. Don’t forget those scary movies and TV shows that the villains are the In-laws.
Now if you think of this issue from a different perspective you will appreciate your In-laws much more. They are the people that have accepted you into their family and they are the ones that adopt you as part of their family. You are joining two families together and now you are one big family instead of two separate families. You should care for each other and both families with equal care. This will not only increase the love between the families because of your behavior but also increase the love between the two of you. In this world who doesn’t love the person who loves their parents?
Another issue of hard times is inevitable especially if you all live together. Living together is not recommended but sometimes it is not possible to avoid in some situations. There will surely be times when you are stressed out because of your In-laws or some issues related to them. Ask yourself the question that did these stressful issues ever come up when you were not married and how you dealt with them because certainly family issues come up in every family. So now as part of this family; issues will come up in your bigger family. So take a deep breath and help each other as husband and wife and find a solution for fixing the issues of your family together. An interesting fact is that when people are asked: if a day comes when you need people all around you in calamity who will come to your aid or to the aid of your children and you will be surprised to hear that many mention their In-laws as some of the people who they know for sure will help them and support them. So don’t think of the term as being negative because that is what you will get and if you change your mindset and accept them as your own family indeed things will become more positive for you.
Lastly, think of how the Prophet SAW treated his In-laws in Abu-Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) to who’s daughters he was married to and how he treated Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to who he had given his daughter and how they all loved each other. They were happy to increase their ties as families and we should be just being as happy when we are the source of joining together families through our marriage.

Rawalpindi: A District and Session Court Judge, Muhammad Naveed Iqbal, on Friday convicted Muhammad Asif, a man who killed a girl by throwing acid in 2009, and sentenced him to death.

Asif threw acid on a girl to death on refusing marriage proposal on June 5, 2009 in jurisdiction of A R Bazar.

The police registered case against him in 2010 while his trial was started in 2011. The court has also put Rs500,000 penalty on him.

I dont know why in Pakistan people do not like girls riding bicycles. I mean its a healthy activity. Recently there was a cycling event (which was also covered by Dawn) and that aimed at creating awareness among people as regards to traffic and air pollution. I and my friend wanted to participate but then our parents were like "nahi baita, rehnay dou, logon ke nazron main aa jatay hain".

Unfortunately Pak people have a slave mentality, a mentality of following backward cultures of Arabs. The arabs use to treat women like animals, and later on they decided to mix their backward thinking with religion. They took a few parts of religion and mixed it up with their culture. Wherever they went they spread this culture including when they conquered the sub-continent.

This mentality of males are superior to females is all rubbish. These are two different genders who have own strengths and weaknessnes.

there is a village nearby Kharian area - (which is nearly between Islamabad and Lahore).

There are few women riding motorcycles and they have full support from their mahram (parents, husbands and brothers).
In the beginning the reaction was that the whole village and entire area came to them telling them that it was not right.

BUT male familymembers became so frustrated and angry when everyone came with such statements that they answered and won the discussion by saying, the women had covered their bodies, they wore helmets and had a driver license - thus upholding the traffic rules and regulations and their own familymembers support them as long they aren't doing anything wrong, then why should people inflict in such matter.

It should be fully agreed upon that. After some period, people got used to it and they had to acknowlegde the women aren't commiting any bad actions.

It is not difficult to get out from the slave mentality, it is the strength of the mind to tackle ignorant people.


Even I taught my sisters, cousines and my wife to drive a motorbike, true i must state there was a reaction among the men and even the women. It wasn't easy.
But i was there teaching them to drive a motorbike. And when people were looking or asking what i was doing, i said it is nor Haraam now is it?
Every elder familymember were scolding me for teaching my own female familymebers in riding a motorbike.

I got angry and lost my temper, and had a hot debate till the late night, that the hindu slave mentality has destroyed Pakistanis.
So what if people talk, see or hear. It is just a reaction, it is the mind of your ownselves (incl me)  that needs to be free from such slave mentality.
The society needs to develop from the bottom till the top.
Interesting thing is, there is religious channel "Madani Channel" broadcasted Dawat-e-Islami, They had the same preaching to the viewer and hearers.
And this is what the preacher said: people look-  what will they think about me - people see, what or would they look at - people hear, what will they hear about me... But we don't think the same when Allah/God is looking, hearing and thinking about us and we don't care about it at all!


As far as I was informed by friend who went to Malaysia and witnessed himself that Muslim women with hijaab ride a motorbike or scooter Hijaab.

But where do we, us Pakistanis - national based or at overseas, stand because if the slave mentality is not removed from our hearts and minds, then we aren't going to develop and direct towards a healthy society.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) freed slaves and remove the slave mentality from the Lovely Black ex-slave Bilal into equal individual in the ignorant society.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal (May Allah Bless his soul) did not remain silent on such matter:

Tum syed bhi ho Mirza bhi ho Afghan bhi ho tum sabhi kuchh ho batao ki musalman bhi ho" You are Syed; you are Mirza; you are Afghan. You are everything. Tell me, are you Muslim too?" We are everything, but have forgotten to be Muslim in a Pakistani Islamic with dominance of hindu-mindset. Peace

I found that Mufti sahib so annoying. Why was he and his men were getting so emotional? Reminded me of "Mudaii sust, gawah chust". The host was asking logical questions but alas! Mufti sahib was quick in blaming everything on laws which were enacted by "Angraiz", though someone should ask him if Imam Abu Hanifa was also angraiz because our reasons have endorsed the Hanfi opinion on it. But well, that happens when you stick to a dogma without looking into other opinions. Mufti sahib quoted a hadith and the host was silent. Thats a very wrong approach. I believe he should have researched over the issue and then asked these maulvis/ muftis.  I had to make my assignment over this issue and without doubt, the arguments given by Imam Abu Hanifa are very rational and I believe the courts rightly endorsed Hanfi opinion for the greater good of society. So court marriages are not haram. Btw near Imam Abu Hanifa, even witnesses is not an essential. There is only one essential and that is "offer and acceptance". So if the guy says to the girl something like I marry you and the girl says something similar which clearly proves her intention, nikah is concluded. Why on earth have we promoted this nikah khawan culture? I mean every family can do it at their own, why to go for a maulvi? Someone should ask this host as to why this society is confused? Thats because people like him love getting confused but hate following Allah first revelation telling man to "Read".

If more women start working and moving in public it would herald a major socio economic change. However, without men changing their perceptions about women, there will be serious social implications and increase in crimes against women. that is what is happening in many developing societies including india where women have begun to claim their rightful place in society. which means more of them get exposed to a society whose perceptions suffer from a serious lag when it comes to change.
one of the most important ways of nurturing a change in social perception is sensitizing the law enforcement agencies on the gender issue. without proactive state protection drastic societal changes will be very painful for women.
according to me, the opinion that there has been a spurt in crimes against women is not a really informed one. because, what is happening in the society now is that more crimes are getting reported and the stories get better play in the media. and more victims and their relations are prepared to report crimes. and there has been no study correlating the increase in gender crimes with the increase in women now moving around in society.
as a media observer i have noticed that violence, especially gender violence, taking place even in the remotest parts of india now get reported in the media, thanks to the proliferation of media, progress of technology etc.

A female school teacher was killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday near Afghan border.


PESHAWAR (AFP) – According to officials, a Pakistani girls  school teacher was killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday in the country s volatile tribal belt on the Afghan border, officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but Islamist militants are particularly opposed to girls  education in the northwest, where they have bombed hundreds of schools in recent years.

Shahnaz Nazli, 41, was shot dead in Shahkas, near the town of Jamrud in Khyber tribal district, between the northwestern city of Peshawar and the Afghan border.

She was on her way to the government girls  primary school in Shahkas when gunmen fired at her about 200 metres (yards) from the school and fled, local government official Asmatullah Wazir told AFP.

"The teacher was killed after unknown gunmen on a motorbike shot her and fled," Wazir said.

Local education officer Mohammad Jadoon Khan confirmed the shooting and death of the teacher.

Violence has increased in northwest Pakistan ahead of elections, which are due on May 11 and which will mark the first time an elected civilian government completes a full term in office.

Last October, a Taliban gunman shot and wounded schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai for campaigning for girls  education in Pakistan s Swat Valley, in an attack that shocked the world.

The military has long been fighting Taliban and other Islamist insurgents in Khyber, which straddles a key NATO supply route into Afghanistan, where US-led combat troops are due to leave next year.
