Karachi—Federal Minister for Railway Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has said that more trains could be cancelled while fares may be increased if needed as there was no chance to improve railway in the next two years.
Addressing a press conference at the office of Divisional Superintendent (DS) Railway here on Tuesday, he said there is no possibility for the improvement of railway in next two years and predicted to close more trains and raise railway fares.
On the occasion, Divisional Superintendent (DS) Railway Aftab Memon, General Manager (GM) Pakistan Railway Ashfaq, Deputy inspector General (DIG) Railway and other officials were also present. The federal minister said previous governments had given attention to motorways, goods transport and improved National Logistics Company (NLC) but unfortunately, no stone was turned in this sector. He said the railway department is given support in the world and Pakistan Railway also needs support because it is going in loss. He said that the government had committed to give Rs 5 billion to railway Shaukat Tarin was Finance Minister and hoped that this money would be provided to railway which enables them to repair 100 railway engines. He said he would meet the Prime Minister in this regard.
“In order to reduce losses in railway, it needed to increase the fares”, he said. He said one of the main reasons responsible for losses in the railway was Rs 22 billion which is paid in salaries, bonuses and pensions.“We spend only Rs 7 billion in pensions, Rs 4 billion in salaries which goes in loss”, he said. Ghulam Ahmad Bilour said that 120 railway engines got from China were going out of order. He said Pakistani railway track is 150 years old and modern engines can not run on this track. The railway minister said there are 62 engines in which 27 are in Karachi, 22 in Lahore, 6 in Peshawar, 3 in Mardan and 4 railway engines are running in Quetta. —NNI

LAHORE: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Railways has approved the closure of 120 train services in the next two years, as these particular train services are facing huge financial losses, a private TV channel reported on Wednesday. Chairman of the NA standing committee, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Ayaz Sadiq and Pakistan Railways (PR) General Manager Ashfaq Khattak, told the media, that the resources, which would be saved from the halted trains, would be used on the cargo trains, which delivered oil to independent power producers (IPP). “40 trains are making profits of Rs 9 billion whereas more than 100 trains would be closed because of annual loss of Rs 10 billion,” they said. Sadiq urged the federal government to waive the debts of PR as it was facing debts of Rs 50 billion. Khattak said that PR had been operating 26 cargo trains, which could earn a profit of Rs 17 billion but due to shortage of engines it was not possible to do so, the TV channel reported. daily times monitor

LAHORE: Citizens have criticised the Pakistan Railways’ decision to dump the Shalimar Express on pretext of financial deficit, despite it being the busiest train ever launched by the authorities. The Shalimar Express is the fourteenth train dumped by the authorities within the past few months. The passengers have termed the idea of dumping the most famous trains in the department as an attempt by the government to privatise the whole department by selling these trains to private businessmen.Railway employees are also skeptical about the decision. The passengers, who travel on the special train from Lahore to Sehwan Sharif also protested against the dumping, saying “the railway authorities have also reduced the number of carriages in the trains to the sacred place”. staff report

I have a hunch these fools plan on buying even more engines from loan money since every new locomotive probably has a % kickback for Zardari.i think very soon we will have horse drawn cabbins running on our railway lines

Please also note that even if virtually no trains are in service, the railway staff remains the same! I have nothing against those poor people. My point is that if we want miracles performed; like in the field of telecommunications in Pakistan, we must privatize all these white elephants.
Some times it cost me $ 1.5 / minute in USA to call home. Now in Pakistan it is less than Rs 4 / minute! Compare this with the days when big ‘sifarish’ was needed to get a landline phone.

Maybe he is cancelling them bcoz it only benefits punjab?
what they cud do is, intoduce private investment...sell routes to different companies who bring in their own trains...railways charges a fee for using their lines, signals and their infrastructure, which is fixed throughout. The train companies charge their own ticketting..atleast the trains will be kept in check...then all these inept bastards need to do is keep the tracks in shape...

Not a good news for Pakistan and its economy. 6 is a number of trains (minimum) added newly in State of Maharashtra every month, forget the whole of India for that matter.

That was not the point.
Point was trains are faster (compared to road) and yet cheaper mode of transport and helps the economy in a big time. Yet outrightly 6 train routes were not to be closed.

Why compare to Pakistan, when China is more your size, bullys always look for smaller opponent to get over the inferiority complex
China has 7000km of high speed railway, India even in the next 100 years will never reach that figure enough said

I never made any comparisons to begin with, unless you want to show.
From the very beginning I am only talking about Pakistan and Pakistani impact of closing train services.
Yes I did give an example of India but that was not comparing, rather an example.

ah the good old rate free days....
Pakistan's geography is different than Indias, we dont rely on railway as much bcoz the country is 2000km north south while only 300-500km east west. SO a major railway line north south does the job....we just need to maintain it better.

Is that a justification for closing those 6 routes?
Even that 300-500km by railways will do a great job for transporting people and goods. Faster and cheaper.

Miro its not only trains that you are repeating about cheap/fast.Public transport(Bus,Trucks) are more cheap less time consuming.
i think its good if they are closing those six trains.our people are not interesting in trains now.many of us prefer using buses for travel.time changed.

Thursday, August 12, 2010: Pakistan Railways has announced that it would suspend services of around 102 trains on Thursday. According to GM Railways Ashfaq Khattak, the locomotive services would be discontinued in phases. ‘The decision to discontinue operation of train services has been taken in view of the huge financial losses that stand above Rs 50 billion', Khattak added. He said engines of the suspended trains would be attached to goods trains. It merits to mention that of the 102 trains, Railways has already suspended the operation of 28 trains.
