Security forces captured Sher Mohammad Kasab in a raid near Swat's main town, Mingora, on Wednesday. The militant was wounded while his three sons were killed an in exchange of fire.
"He was severely wounded. We tried to save his life, but he succumbed to his wounds early this morning," said a military spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Akhtar Abbas.
Another military official in the region said the death of Kasab, who carried bounty of 10 million rupees ($120,000) on his head, would reassure residents of the former tourist valley that the Taliban was finished.
Kasab killed many civilians, policemen and troops and released video tapes of the murders.
Pakistani forces have made significant gains against the militants in their Swat offensive after Taliban advances and attacks raised fears for nuclear-armed Pakistan's future and contributed to a slide in investor confidence.
Militant attacks have tapered off in recent weeks after the death of the Pakistani Taliban chief in a missile fired by a U.S. drone aircraft on Aug. 5.
But security officials say fighters loyal to al Qaeda and the Taliban are still a serious threat.

ISLAMABAD – A feared Taliban commander known for beheading opponents died in custody Sunday from wounds sustained during a fierce firefight with Pakistani security forces last week, the military said.
Sher Muhammad Qasab died after being critically wounded in the gunbattle in Swat Valley, the army's media center said in a statement. Qasab's three sons were killed when he was captured.
Qasab is an Urdu-language word meaning "butcher." He was given the title because of his ruthlessness toward enemies.
The arrest of Qasab — who had a $121,000 bounty on his head — was the third from the army's list of 10 most-wanted Swat militants. Qasab allegedly decapitated many Pakistani troops in Swat when the Taliban was in control.
The Pakistan Taliban has been on the run since being cleared from the scenic valley, once a tourist hotspot, and surrounding areas in July after the military launched a major offensive to retake the region in April.
The military announced Sunday that security forces killed eight militants in search operations throughout Swat since Saturday. Twenty-three insurgents were also apprehended and another 22 surrendered, it said in a statement. One of the militants killed was a Taliban commander identified as Chamtu Khan, it said.
A Pakistani patrol also killed 10 Taliban attempting to infiltrate Swat Valley's main city of Mingora on Thursday.
The army offensive against Taliban fighters in Swat has killed more than 1,800 alleged militants, according to the military. It says 330 Pakistani troops also died in operations in the valley.

I for one would have prefered him to die the same way he killed the sons & fathers of so many people .. beheaded !

I don't think the TTP is organised enough to effectively replace them. What really matters now is to take out the second string of management, before they can dig in.

ya i agree we must not forget what these butchers did to our soldiers.arent there any human rights of the soldiers fighting and captured by taliban as POWs. and after all the bloodshed they caused what do they expect from us that we will present them with flowers. they should be killed the same way they killed innocent civilians and captured soldiers.arent their mothers of the saheed soldiers.arent their children of saheed soliders who have been orphaned because of these butchers.we should treat them the same way so next time taliban think before beheading our soldiers that if they are captured they will be treated the same way so it will act as a deterence and save the lives of many innocents.

Thanks a lot for Bringing in Allah, cause actually we are rejoicing because not only did he do babarism against our troops whose only fault was that they were defending our country & our flag, but also the scum of earth brought bad name to our Religion of Islam & also to our mostly beloved Prophet (PBUH).
We are rejoicing his death in our personal capacity, we are not bringing in an excuse of his death & using our religion wherein no where is it mention to kill your own Kulmago & coutrymen by beheading.
While our love & sympathy is with his mother & Allah koyi maan to iss aziyat say na dohrayay but what about the pain of the mother whose son were beheaded by this madman ! Even in this time, we are having sympathy with this butcher's mother .. but did he have sympathy of the mother of our soldiers who came live on TV & requested for the life of her children ! No !
I rest my case your honour.

Mothers, my dear brother will always beg for the lives of their children. How many times have we seen mothers spilling tears for their serial killing sons in court? Many times….This horrible, vile, devil was a serial killer and a coward. What he got in this world, pales in comparison to the torment that awaits him in the next world. This mother should have done the honorable thing and disowned him or let the punishment be carried out.
They say love is blind, in this case it certainly was….
Ameen to the rest.

No disrespect is intended towards the mother, however her dilemna means little compared to the pain suffered by the mothers of our brave soldiers.
The scum bag was an evil and cold blood murderer and got what he deserved.
It should also worth noting, in our part of the world, mothers play a major role in how a child is nurtured hence no sympathy.
