BISHAM: A prominent supporter of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Maulana Waliullah Kabalgrami surrendered to security forces in Thakot area of Kohistan district on Tuesday.

Sources said Maulana Waliullah alias Sheikh Maulana, an important leader of the outlawed Tehrik Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM), unconditionally surrendered to security forces. He had gone underground after security forces entered Shangla to purge the district of militants....

'They cannot break us'
Tuesday's attack on the Pearl Continental hotel in Peshawar killed at least nine people, a week after the Taliban threatened major attacks in large cities to avenge an army offensive to reclaim Swat.

"We will fight this war 'til our last breath," Bilour said. "They cannot break us. The whole nation is united."

Pakistan Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira used the same language: "The whole nation is united and backing the government and army in the fight against terrorists," he said in a statement.

That is an overstatement, at least in the rugged, lawless tribal belt where the Taliban and al-Qaida have carved out a sanctuary of entrenched strongholds with at least tacit blessings from tribal elders.

Still, interviews with people on the streets of Pakistan's three largest cities — Peshawar, Karachi and Lahore — found nothing but contempt for the Taliban.

Mohammad Zubair, 32, a human resources employee at a Lahore construction company, called the Islamic militants "a mafia of criminals."

"They do not have anything to do with Islam. They are just exploiting our religion to mislead our youth," he said. "They are killing innocent people. They deserve death wherever they are."

Is Taliban support waning?
Moosa Ahmad, 40, a shopkeeper in Karachi, said he did not want such attacks on urban civilian targets to deter the army from pursuing the Taliban.

"These strikes should not make any difference, and the government must expedite its offensive," he said. "They should be chased wherever they are and wherever they go."

Tariq Khan, 26, a Peshawar teacher, lamented that the blast killed two U.N. workers — one from Serbia, the other from the Philippines — and wounded four others.

"They were helping us, and what we gave them was death, wounds and fear," Khan said. "I am sure that such attacks will only serve for more hatred and more opposition to those involved in these terrorist attacks."

Hasan-Askari Rizvi, a political and defense analyst, said overall sentiment is more nuanced. Nevertheless, he said it appears that the Taliban's support is waning.

"Among ordinary Pakistanis, the state of mind is changing only to the extent that they are more afraid. And now what do you do after being afraid?" Rizvi said.

"Some people will start saying stop the operations and others will argue that you should take firm action against them. While ordinary people might sometimes have contradictory thinking, overall I would say the balance is tilting against the Taliban."

    ISLAMABAD, June 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people were injured in a blast in a southwestern Pakistani town Friday, according to local TV reports.

    A bomb exploded at a bus stand in Dera Murad Jamali, a town in the southwestern Balochistan province, the private Geo TV reported.

Fazalullah 'surrounded' by Pakistani troops


Pakistan's Interior Ministry Chief Rehman Malik says Maunalan Fazalullah a pro-Taliban leader in Swat valley has been surrounded by Pakistani troops.

"By and large we know the location where he [Fazalullah] is hiding," Malik told reporters in Islamabad.

This is while some other reports suggest that the notorious leader may have been killed during recent offensives against the insurgents in the valley.

However, the minister neither confirmed nor denied Fazalullah's killing, according to a Press TV correspondent. "Nothing confirmed can be said at this stage without seeing his (Fazalullah's) dead body."

The warlord's death could demoralize the militants which are already on the run across the volatile valley.  

The Pakistani military claims to have killed nearly 1,600 militants since it launched the crackdown about two months ago.  

Earlier, Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar said that over the two million civilians who had been displaced by the fighting in the valley, will be able to return home very soon.

This is while South Waziristan, in the lawless border region with Afghanistan, has been hit by air raids and military shelling in recent days.

Up to 45,000 people on Monday had left their homes in a Pakistani tribal district bordering Afghanistan where many feared a full-fledged military offensive against Tehrik-e-Taliban (TeT) chief Baitullah Mehsud.

The US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 has turned the restive tribal belt between the two neighbors into a scene of daily violence.

Strategic road recaptured; 22 more militants killed
ISLAMABAD: Security forces are in the final phase of eliminating terrorist hideouts and camps in Swat, Director-General ISPR Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said on Monday.

Addressing a press briefing here, Athar Abbas said: “In the north, Biha Valley — the last stronghold of terrorists — has been fully secured and in the west, Shamozai area is being cleared. Search operations are being carried out in the secured areas to ensure that they are safe for the return of the internally displaced persons (IDPs).”

Minister of State for Information Samsam Bukhari, Secretary Information Ashfaq Gondal and Principal Information Officer Mian Shabbir Anwar were also present on the occasion.

Athar Abbas said so far 1,592 terrorists had been killed in the operation while 60 to 70 others had been arrested, who were being interrogated. “A number of successful intelligence-led operations have been carried out in various parts of the country following the information gathered from the arrested terrorists,” he told a questioner. He said the arrested terrorists also included the Afghans and the Uzbeks. He said preparations were in full swing for an operation in South Waziristan Agency (SWA), where security forces had regained the control of the road from Jandola to Wana.

On the occasion, photographs of around 54 terrorists, who were killed during the Malakand operation, were also shown to media personnel besides a video footage of a large tunnel, which terrorists used as main depot to store their arms and ammunition and as a bunker for hiding themselves during the operation.

He said the photographs of the dead terrorists were being avoided to be issued to the media as the bodies were in mutilated condition. However, he added: “To avoid the baseless and unfounded rumours, a few of the photographs of the dead terrorists are being shown here.”

He pointed out that the accumulation of arms and ammunition and the level of preparations by terrorists in the area under operation spoke volume about their nefarious designs. “They had prepared themselves to an amazing level. They had planned a full-fledged war against security forces,” he said.

He was highly appreciative of the role of the media, which objectively reported the facts about the operation. He said a few persons from the news channels were also taken to the operation area.

When his attention was drawn towards a press statement regarding encircling of terrorist commander Baitullah, he said he had no such report neither he knew whether Baitullah had fled the area or otherwise. Absence of technical intelligence capability was one of the handicaps to exactly locate the terrorist commander, he added.

In reply to a question, he said the terrorist leadership was effectively targeted while some reports had revealed the killing of a few of them, while critically wounding some others. He said reports had also revealed that those who were killed had been buried in the area. Further information were being gathered to get these reports confirmed, he added.

The military spokesman said various search and cordon operations were conducted by security forces whereby neutralising a number of IEDs and destroying a number of small and big tunnels, while 22 more terrorists were killed and five others were apprehended in Malakand.

He said 14 terrorists were killed by security forces during the ‘link up operation’ at the Shamozai Bridge, while eight large size IEDs planted by terrorists were also neutralised.

Security forces successfully secured Biha Valley and also cleared Bartana South of Chuprial. He said three small size tunnels were destroyed at Loi Namal while a local Jirga handed over a terrorist to security forces at Bahrain while four others were apprehended at Wanai Bridge, Shalkosar, Bashkhela and Drushkhela.

As far as the restoration of services in the operation area is concerned, he said all the roads in Mingora city and the Mingora by-pass had been repaired for two-way traffic by Army engineers. The road was badly damaged by the terrorists.

Electricity has been restored in Buner while gas was being supplied to Mingora and surrounding areas. Around 500 PTCL lines in Mingora were fully functional while work to repair the Optical Fibre and exchange at Saidu Sharif was being carried out at a pace, he added.

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Rehman Malik said on Monday that there were unconfirmed reports that TTP Swat leader Maulana Fazlullah had been injured. In an exclusive talk with APP here at the Parliament House, Malik denied a statement attributed to him by a section of the press that security forces had put a cordon around Fazlullah. “No, I’ve not said that.”

   ISLAMABAD: Amir Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl-ur-Rehman has said that the ongoing military operation in the country has no backing of the National Security Committee and the Parliament.

Addressing a program in Jamia Qasmia Islamabad, the JI Amir said: “The foreign forces have created chaotic situation in Pakistan by imposing their war on us.”

He termed the approach of using arms for demanding implementation of Shariah Law as incorrect but “the government should fulfill its responsibility toward enforcement of Shariah.”

PESHAWAR/MIRAMSHAH/WANA: Twenty-two soldiers were killed and thirty-five others injured in two separate attacks by militants in North and South Waziristan agencies on Sunday. Also a same number of militants were killed in the day-long blitz and retaliatory attacks by security forces in the restive region.

20 Pakistan Army soldiers, including a senior officer, were killed and 35 others sustained injuries, several of them seriously, when dozens of militants, affiliated with Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, ambushed a military convoy in Madakhel area of North Waziristan Agency on Sunday.

Also, 12 militants and two soldiers were killed in the ongoing offensive in neighbouring South Waziristan Agency.Ahmadullah Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Taliban in North Waziristan claimed responsibility for the attack on the military convoy and warned to continue similar attacks on the security forces in the region till the US drone strikes were not stopped.

Ahmadi phoned The News from Miramshah and claimed 60 soldiers were killed and 15 vehicles were destroyed in the ambush.Pakistan Army spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas confirmed the attack and said 12 soldiers were martyred and 10 others seriously injured.

When reached by telephone, Athar Abbas told The News that 10 terrorists were later killed when the Pakistan Army gunship choppers pounded positions of the terrorists where they had ambushed the military convoy.

Official and tribal sources told The News from Miramshah that the military convoy was travelling from Madakhel to Wocha Bibi area near the border with Afghanistan when ambushed by the militants.

The convoy came under attack when it was passing through a narrow road surrounded by mountains.Almost in the same place earlier, militants had ambushed a military convoy and killed 16 soldiers in 2007.

The militants first attacked the military with an improvised explosive device (IED) and then started firing with heavy weapons.They said the militants used heavy weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, mortar shells and AK-47 assault rifles.

After the attack, the militants reportedly took away weapons and other items from the slain soldiers.The area is away from main Miramshah town and it took some time when senior military officials came to know about the incident.

Almost two hours later, two military helicopters — a gunship and a transport — were sent to the troubled spot. The chopper shifted 20 bodies of the soldiers and 35 injured to Miramshah. Military officials, who airlifted the injured troops, said a majority of them were in a critical condition.

Some of them were later sent to Bannu and Peshawar in choppers and admitted to military hospitals. Maj Gen Athar Abbas said gunship helicopters later pounded militant positions in the area. It was the second attack on military convoy by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led militants in North Waziristan in a week. In an earlier attack near Miramshah, four soldiers were killed and 20 others injured.

Gul Bahadur, who was considered a pro-government Taliban commander after he signed a peace accord with the government on February 17, 2008, has suddenly changed his stance. The tribesmen fear after the attack the government might launch a military operation in North Waziristan.

Elsewhere in South Waziristan, 12 militants were killed and seven others sustained injuries as jetfighters bombed the suspected hideouts of the Taliban. Also, two soldiers were killed and four injured seriously in different parts of the tribal region.

The tribal sources said the gunship helicopters and jetfighters bombed hideouts of the militants at 10:00 am in Saam, Kacha Lungerkhel, Kuram Garhi, Ladha Serai, Tangi Budenzai, Makeen, Janata, Srarogha, Kotkai, Garhagah and suburbs of Ladha Tehsil, killing 12 militants and injuring seven others.

It was reported that six houses of civilians, including that of Dr Bashar Khan, Malik Saad, Noor Khan, Jalut Khan, Bachi Gul and Sher Dati, were bombed by the jetfighters in Saam area of Ladha Tehsil. A fort-shaped-house of Malik Nasir Khan was also destroyed in Garhagah area.

The sources said four compounds of the militants were also targeted by the gunship helicopters in the mountainous areas of the agency. Security forces used artillery while firing from the hilly area of Naray and hit different areas of the Mahsud tribes, including Badar, Sina Tera and Chalweshti.

Forces and militants also traded heavy gunfire in Sholam, Raghzai and Tanai, due to which two soldiers were killed and four others injured. Meanwhile, people started migration from the area amid shelling by security forces towards Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts.

Two commanders, trainer of suicide bombers held in Swat

PESHAWAR: Security forces on Sunday claimed to have arrested two local militant commanders and a suicide bomber trainer in the Swat Valley.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) media update said security forces cleared the area around Kokarai and established a link up to Jambil. It was reported that the police had started patrolling in Mingora and the sanitation staff was also ordered to start work in the city.

“Local militant commanders, identified as Akbar and Saleem and a suicide bomber trainer Abdul Rehman, were also arrested,” it said, adding that an explosive-laden car and a rickshaw were also recovered from the Kokarai area.

Security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from a graveyard in Garai, four kilometres northeast of Shamozai. Meanwhile, security forces continued shelling different parts of the Mingora city and demolished two houses of militants.

Sources said a militant, Shaukat, was injured in the shelling by security forces on the hideouts of terrorists in the Islampura area. Security forces shifted him to an undisclosed location after he was provided treatment at the Saidu Sharif Hospital.

The sources said security forces demolished houses and a shop of two militants, identified as Fazal Burhan and Behramand, in the Haji Baba area. However, there were no reports of casualties.

PESHAWAR/MIRAMSHAH: The government finally reacted to the militants’ brazen terrorist activities in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) by targeting the suspected positions of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Taliban fighters by warplanes on Tuesday.

Also, fearing losses in the likely military operation against the militants, hundreds of Utmanzai tribal families started migration to relatively safer places in towns of Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Peshawar.

Some of the families living on the Pak-Afghan border villages like Madakhel, Dattakhel and Lowara Mandi even crossed into neighbouring Afghanistan’s Urgoon area, where an Afghan official welcomed the displaced tribal families and gave $300 to each family.

Situation in the volatile North Waziristan tribal region turned tense after two attacks on the Pakistan Army convoys by the local militants and then scrapping their peace accord with the government.

Security forces suffered heavy losses in the two attacks that led to heavy bombing by the PAF fighter planes on suspected positions of the militants. Before the warplanes could arrive, Security forces based at Dattakhel and Gharlamay military camps continued shelling the suspected positions of the militants.

Tribal sources said two warplanes arrived in the afternoon and started heavy bombing on suspected locations of Gul Bahadur-led militants at Lattaka and Doga villages of Madakhel. Heavy explosions caused by bombing on Madakhel village were heard in Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan.

Madakhel, which is hometown of Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur, is about 50 kilometres west of Miramshah. There were no details about the losses suffered by the militants and local tribesmen in the bombing.

A senior military official, when reached by telephone, told The News that bombing by jets on Madakhel was a reaction to the Sunday’s attack on the military convoy by terrorists in which 30 soldiers — three of them officers — were killed and 35 others injured.

He did not confirm whether the government was going to launch a military operation against the militants in North Waziristan. The government may not open another dangerous front for security forces, which had been engaged in the non-stop battle against the militants in almost all the seven tribal regions as well as the restive Malakand Division.

Though the Taliban scrapped the peace accord with the government and said they closed all doors for talks, tribal elders and senior clerics continued efforts for defusing the tension between the government and the Taliban.

The Jirga members were satisfied with positive response from the government officials regarding peace talks with the militants. Pleading anonymity, one of the Jirga members seemed hopeful about their efforts and said they would soon bring the two sides on the negotiation table.

Dozens of families were seen fleeing their homes at the border area and shifting to other towns in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Peshawar. Some of the tribal families crossed the border and went to Urgoon town in Afghanistan’s Paktika province to evade losses in case the government launched the military operation. According to tribal sources, an Afghan official was deputed on the Pak-Afghan border to receive the displaced Pakistani tribal families.

Pak Army not to launch operation in NWA

PESHAWAR: The helicopters of Pakistan Army threw pamphlets in North Waziristan Agency capital of Miranshah urging the people to side with people.

In the text of pamphlet, Pak Army ensured complete implementation on the peace treaty and that some miscreants do not want to see the treaty intact.

The pamphlet clearly underlines that some miscreants are attacking on Pak Army with propaganda that the Army wants to launch operation in the area.

It was said that Pak Army does not want any operation in the area; however, wherever, Pak Army is attacked, it preserves the right to take action against the miscreant elements, who would be held fully responsible for the operation.

The pamphlet urged the people to play their vital role in rescuing peace in the area by uncovering the saboteurs. People were urged not to allow their soil to be employed against the government and army.

“It is your own military, therefore, you are called upon to fully cooperate with it.”

The text says, “The army guarantees protection from internal and external enemies and its security is the security of Islamic Republic of Pakistan; therefore, you should support Pakistan Army.”

Islamabad, Wednesday, July 01, 2009: On the afternoon of June 13, I left Islamabad for the village of Maghal in Chakwal district's Tehsil Choa Saidan Shah -- about 35 kilometres from the Kallar Kahar motorway exit. As the vehicle approached the Maghal village I could feel a sense of festivity. I noticed people dressed nicely, walking towards the house of Subedar ® Malik Sahib Khan Awan. There is hardly any house in Maghal and the surrounding villages from where someone hasn't served in the armed forces of Pakistan. The local residents had gathered to receive the body of Lieutenant Malik Faiz Sultan Awan Shaheed, son of Subedar Khan Awan, a proud son of the soil who laid down his life and embraced shahadat in the line of duty while fighting terrorists from their well-defended position at the top of Zaray Sir in Mohmand Agency on June 11.

His father was present among a huge gathering receiving and greeting guests pouring in from all over the places. The moment I came across Subedar Sahib Khan he greeted me with a glitter in his eyes and said: "Sir, thank God that Allah has accepted our sacrifice, I am really proud of my son. He received twenty-two bullets in his chest and none in his back". His statement left me stunned for a while but I could now understand the reason of festivity and pride that I noticed among all the proud villagers.

Lieutenant Awan Shaheed was born on Sept 3, 1985. He was the eldest among five brothers and sisters and received his early education from F G Public School, Kharian, and later from Military College, Jhelum. He joined the PMA in 2005 and passed out with flying colours in April 2007. He was commissioned in the elite Bawanja battalion of the Piffer Regiment which is one of the finest infantry battalions of the Pakistan army. He knew very well about the fate of the hazardous operation and he knew that he might have to lay down his life while accomplishing the insurmountable task in the difficult terrain. He left a note in his diary and a telephone message to his mother: "I left home in khaki and will come back in sabz hilali -- I have lost nothing but got everything that I desired". Faiz had packed his backpack with eight additional magazines of ammunition and six hand grenades. He led his men with exemplary courage, eliminating more than 30 battle-hardened and well-trained terrorists before a volley of bullets, including one from a 12.7 calibre heavy machinegun, hit his chest. Faiz embraced shahadat on the spot.

May Allah rest his soul in eternal abode and grant strength to his family members and friends to withstand his untimely departure from this mortal world. Faiz, we are proud of you and we salute your sacrifice and dedication and promise you that we will not let the enemies of your and our motherland succeed in achieving their sinister designs. Long live the martyrs of the Operation Rah-e-Haq.

23 militants killed in Swat: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Security forces killed 23 militants during the last 24 hours in the troubled Swat Valley, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

According to the ISPR media update, security forces engaged militants hiding in a Nullah and killed five of them during a search operation in Kanju. Forces also targeted militant hideouts in the area around Miana, Ahingro and Banai Baba Ziarat. As a result, one militant was killed and two others were apprehended.

During a clearance operation in Meragai area, security forces demolished two terrorist hideouts and recovered eight rifles with 66 rounds, four pistols with 48 rounds and one binocular. The Army troops also consolidated their positions around Shah Dheri. At least 17 terrorists were killed during an exchange of fire in the area.

Besides, during a search operation around Chakdara, forces apprehended three militants and recovered illegal FM radio equipment, one rifle and a pistol. The ISPR release said the militants fired three rockets at the Jandola Fort in South Waziristan Agency. However, it said, no loss of life was reported.

Also, two truckloads of food and relief items were distributed amongst the displaced people of the Malakand Division. Repair work on the Takhtaband Bypass is still in progress by the Army engineers, the release added.

Commander Nazeer vows to keep Peace Treaty in SWA Updated at: 1529 PST, Thursday, July 02, 2009

WANA: The extremist commander based in South Waziristan Mullah Nazeer Thursday announced to side with the government by keeping the peace treaty intact.

During a Jirga held in SWA capital Wana, political administration directed the release of six arrested men.

Political administration, 120-strong Peace Committee, trial veterans and ulema attended the Jirga. Prior to Jirga with political administration, Peace committee, veterans and ulema held negotiations with Commander Mullah Nazeer.

Talking to Geo news, Jirga member Malik Ghazi Mhammed said the Jirga got along well for establishing peace and resolving other issues, adding consensus was achieved to act upon the Peace Treaty 2007.

It was decided in the Jirga that the forces would not be attacked in line with the Peace Treaty; in case violation of the treaty was committed, the whole responsibility would rest with area veterans and the Political Officials would be fully entitled to take action.

Malik Noor Ai, Maulvi Mirza Jan, Ameer Gulistan and other veterans addressed the Jirga.

PESHAWAR/WANA: After the Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led militants in North Waziristan, another pro-government militant commander, Mulla Nazeer, also scrapped his peace deal with the government in South Waziristan Agency on Thursday.

A senior associate of Mulla Nazeer, Saada Janan, called The News from Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, and claimed their Shura or council unanimously decided to scrap the peace accord with the government to protest the frequent US drone attacks in their territory.

The political administration of South Waziristan, however, claimed that Mulla Nazeer has revived his peace accord with the government by sending 120-member jirga of Ahmadzai Wazir elders to negotiate with senior government officials in Wana.

Prominent Ahmadzai elders, including Malik Noor Ali, Malik Ghazi Mohammad and Malik Ajmal Khan led the jirga that called on South Waziristan Political Agent Syed Shahab Ali Shah and Assistant Political Agent Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah in Wana.

The elders said Mulla Nazeer had given them authority to hold talks with the government for restoration of peace in the region. Also, the jirga members said Mulla Nazeer allowed them to revive the April 2007 peace agreement with the government and promised not to attack government installations and security forces.

After successful talks between the government and Ahmadzai Wazirs, the government later released six tribesmen who were held a few days back. A close associate of Mulla Nazeer, who introduced himself as Sadda Janan, however, called The News and said they have nothing to do with a meeting of tribal jirga and political authorities.

He said their Shura or council decided to scrap the peace agreement with the government as according to him the government was fully cooperating with US forces in targeting their leadership in Wana through drone attacks. He said they had already directed their fighters to attack government installations and fight against the security forces.

Asked about a similar stance already taken by Taliban commander in North Waziristan, Hafiz Gul Bahadur over US drone attacks, where drone did not fire missile during the past two months, Saada Janan argued all the three Taliban commanders — Baitullah Mahsud, Mulla Nazeer and Hafiz Gul Bahadur — in February last formed Shura Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen or council of holly warriors, in which he claimed, all of them promised to fight alongside if anyone of them was attacked.

Mulla Nazeer and his Ahmadzai Wazir militants played decisive role in eviction of Uzbek nationals from Wana, Azam Warsak and Shakai areas when the government launched massive military operation against them in 2007.

Tribal Lashkar kills 23 militants: over 100 suspected terrorists held

ISLAMABAD (July 15 2009): Local militia 'tribal Lashkar' in a fight with terrorists in Ambar village of Mohmand Agency have killed 23 terrorists and have destroyed five houses of terrorists in the operation, while security forces arrested more than 100 suspected terrorists in the area.

The clashes took place in the village of Ambar in the Mohmand Agency when local militia attacked the terrorists, Defence sources said on Tuesday. They said that four members of the militia were wounded in the clashes, which began late Monday and continued through Tuesday morning.

Moreover, the security forces in a search operation in Mohmand region have arrested more than 100 suspected persons, sources said. Meanwhile, Security forces continued search and clearance operations in Swat and Malakand, during which nine terrorists were killed and eight were arrested besides forces destroyed two tunnel of terrorists and recovered huge cache of arms, ammunition, explosive and other communication equipment.

The spokesman of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the security forces conducted operation at Syed Parinda Ziarat near Rangeela and arrested five suspected terrorists. Forces also recovered four small machine guns, eleven pistols, two rifles, three grenades and one motorola set, he added.

He said that the forces have also conducted search operation at Kuza Bandai and during exchange of fire five terrorists were killed. He said that security forces attacked terrorists in Tahirabad and Billogram areas and killed four terrorists in the battle.

Security forces conducted a search operation and arrested three suspected terrorists along with close associate of Momin Khan (Kala Dhaka) at Kuza Bandai, he said, adding that the forces have destroyed two caves in Bar, Kuz Drushkhela areas and recovered one small machine gun. A Jirga of local elders at Sakhra assured their co-operation to security forces for clearance operation, the spokesman said. He said that so far 144,495 cash cards have been distributed amongst the IDPs of Malakand.

Seven killed in Waziristan Air strike, rocket attacks
TANK: Five militants and two civilians were killed and seven others injured in air strikes and rocket attacks in South Waziristan and the adjacent Jandola region on Wednesday.

According to security officials, planes shelled two compounds occupied by militants in Sararogha and Laddha areas of South Waziristan, killing five militants and injuring six others.



Militants fired several rockets in the village of Khechi in Frontier Region of Jandola. Two women were killed and one child was injured when one of the rockets hit the house of a tribesman.

Columns of infantry units with tanks moved into North Waziristan and a curfew was clamped on several parts of the agency.



Witnesses said that hundreds of troops had reached their base in Miramshah, the headquarters of the agency, from Mirali, along with 25 tanks and armoured personnel carriers and over 100 other vehicles. All bazaars and markets in the two towns remained closed.



Fifteen tanks were deployed in Mirali. The heavy movement of troops sparked fear in the area.



‘Two helicopter gunships flew over the area and troops fired at every suspected location on their way,’ local people said.



According to officials, one soldier was injured when a bomb exploded near the Banda checkpost. Troops defused four improvised explosive devices planted on the Mirali-Miramshah road.



The situation in North and South Waziristan agencies started deteriorating after militant groups scrapped peace agreements with the government. Militant commanders Hafiz Gul Bahadur and Maulvi Nazir, who were in the good books of the authorities, have also severed relations with the government.

Two security personnel were killed and seven injured when a joint police and FC patrol hit an explosive device near Bakakhel Mandi in Bannu on Wednesday.



According to officials, one FC man was killed on the spot and other died in the district headquarters hospital. They were identified as Rayatullah Khan and Khalid Khan.



The security personnel who were injured are: Sher Ayaz, Mohammad Rehman, Ihsanullah, Riffatullah, Shafiq, Munsif Shah and Fahimullah. Three of them were shifted to Peshawar in critical condition.



The officials said that security forces had cordoned off the area and launched a search for militants.



It may be mentioned that the local administration and the Bakakhel tribe signed an agreement a few days ago to maintain peace and security and prevent attacks on security forces in the area.



Tribal elders said the attack on the FC-police patrol was a conspiracy to sabotage peace efforts.



Meanwhile, the Bannu DCO and the assistant political agent convened a jirga of the Bakakhel peace committee to review the situation arising out of the attack. They told the elders that the attack was a violation of the peace agreement.

MINGORA: Security forces have seized 14 vehicles equipped for suicide attacks and arrested nine people trained for suicide bombings and other subversive activities.

The suspects, the vehicles and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, computers and other equipment seized during an operation were shown to journalists here on Sunday.

Mingora Operational Commander Brig Tahir Hameed said the operation Rah-i-Rast was under way in Swat to secure the remaining pockets of resistance. ‘The security forces have achieved major successes during the search and clearance operation in Swat.’

He said the forces had recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition, vehicles and furniture of schools and banks which militants had looted.

He said normalcy had been restored in 95 per cent of the district, including the city of Mingora, and the operation would continue till the elimination of militants.

A 15-day ban from Monday has been imposed on rickshaws in the valley and owners have been asked to get stickers for their vehicles from police stations.

Brig Hameed said the overall law and order situation was improving. He said several children brainwashed and trained for suicide attacks had been captured.

He said terrorists had deprived the children of an opportunity to get education and their parents had handed them over to the security forces.

He said arrangements were being made to enrol them in schools with free board and lodging and give them monthly scholarship.

The 14 vehicles prepared for suicide attacks, 35,000kgs of explosives, 50 computers, hundreds of guns, over 100 pistols, thousands of rounds and electronic goods seized from militants and their hideouts were displayed at the press briefing.—APP

Large number of commanders decides to surrender: operation Rah-e-Raast crushes resistance

ISLAMABAD (August 01 2009): Security forces during the ongoing 'Operation Rah-e-Raast' have crushed the resistance of terrorists in Swat and other parts of Malakand and a large number of terrorist commanders have decided to voluntarily surrender and denounce the terrorism. Educational activities also started with the success of the military operation.

Five commanders have surrendered during the operation, six terrorists were killed and many terrorists were arrested and huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosive was recovered, said a spokesman of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) here on Friday. He said that the security forces conducted search operation at Charbagh and Allahabad areas of Swat valley and killed six terrorists and recovered cache of arms and ammunition along with material for preparation of IEDs.

He said that search and clearance operations are successfully being conducted by security forces in Swat and other parts of Malakand with the active support from local militia 'Lashkars' and residents of these areas.

Security forces conducted search operation at Khog Bacha where they arrested Ibne Aqeel (younger brother of a notorious terrorist commander Ibne Amin), he said. The ongoing military operation has crushed the resistance of the terrorists and a number of local terrorist commanders have decided to voluntarily surrender and denounce terrorism, the spokesman said, adding that as a sequel two local terrorists commanders voluntarily surrendered at Shalpalam and three terrorists voluntarily surrendered before security forces at village Jheel near BB Ziarat.

The notable of village Alamganj, Chinkulai, Janu and Bandai in Khawazakhela have expressed their commitment to support security forces and resolve not to allow any terrorist in their respective areas, he said. Security forces along with 30 persons of Sultanwas 'Lashkar' conducted area clearance operation from Pir Baba to Dukhada, he added. The spokesman said that 234,635 cash cards have so far been distributed amongst the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of Malakand division.

Meanwhile, the academic activities have been started at the private educational institutions in Swat areas of Khawzakhela on Friday, sources said. They said that more than 17 private schools resumed giving education with low turnout on the first day. Students along with their parents and teachers expressed happiness over the re-opening of the schools and especially thanked Pak Army. All the private and government educational institutions will re-open from tomorrow across the district, they said.

Saturday, August 08, 2009: I went there overwhelmed and immersed in a deep sense of loss and came back with a renewed hope and resolve to serve my country. This is the concluding impression once I am writing these lines about Lieutenant Colonel Tahir Iqbal Shaheed. It appeared as a great personal loss once I heard about his death but then thinking about Shahadat and the cause for which he laid his life brought me some soothe. Lieutenant Colonel Tahir Iqbal embraced Shahadat on 28th June 09 in North Waziristan Agency once his convoy was ambushed by terrorists near Gharlamai. Losing an old comrade is always painful and swallows us with deep sorrows. No doubt soldiers have a commitment to lay down their lives for the country but still we have a human soul and are made of flesh and bones. We have brass on our shoulders but just one foot below there is a heart which is willing to sacrifice every thing for the country but still can not shed away the intrinsic human feelings of love for family and friends. Soldiers knowingly and voluntarily enter into the Valley of Death but it never means that they forget the proud face of their father, warmth of mother's lap, care of brothers and sisters, love of dearest ones and chuckle of their kids. They keep all this in their hearts, never utter a word, often smile while advancing and embrace death like a darling. Has someone ever thought that no money or privilege can compensate for these great sacrifices? Of course, these are not the material gains but sheer love of the country that moves them forward under the greatest perils of death and disability. They are pride of the Nation.

I knew Lieutenant Colonel Tahir Iqbal Shaheed once we together served in Military Operations Directorate. I knew him as a man with great sense of commitment, interminable energy for consistent hard work and above all an amenable demeanor which he maintained during intense working hours of Military Operations Directorate. He was a friend and a brother. He was too willing to help out not only the colleagues but also our staff in solving their problems. He was a true humanist who always had a smile on his face and a big heart to accommodate. With these in my mind, I was moving to Islamabad to interview the family of this great departed friend. I was thinking more of their personal loss and less about other issues. And then I met those brave souls who changed my entire thinking patterns. A bereaved mother, a gloomy wife and dim children were in my imagination. This all was there but not in that magnitude that it could swallow the beaming pride, patriotic talk, unflinching resolve and above all a desire to keep serving the country with more gusto and dedication. This is the family of Lieutenant Colonel Tahir Iqbal Shaheed: Iffat Tahir, the wife; eight years old Abu Bakar and five years old Mohammad Hassan, the children and eighty years old Zubaida Khanum, the mother of this great son. They all are too proud of him and the cause for which he laid his life. They talked so passionately about him and Pakistan that our interview lasted for more than four hours.

Zubaida Khanum recalls her memories about her youngest son who took birth on 16th March 1969 in Gamtala Village, Narowal, District Sialkot. Being the youngest son, he was the most favorite and loved one for the complete family. Late Muhammad Rafique, father of Lieutenant Colonel Tahir Shaheed and his two elder sons Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Javed Iqbal were all too keen to take care of him. Due to his loving manners, he still remained the favorite even after birth of his only sister, Bushra Farroq. Once Tahir Shaheed was in 6th his father succumbed to death and left the great burden of raising the family on shoulders of Zubaida Khanum. On 28th June 2009, history repeated itself and this time Abu Bakar and Hassan are only eight and five years old that their beloved father has departed them. Now Zubaida Khanum sees her daughter-in-Law Iffat Tahir performing the same Herculean task which she undertook with great courage and dedication. She still remembers with immense affection that how Tahir Shaheed used to search her in nearby houses, if she was not at home on his return from the school. He was a brilliant student who did his matriculation with distinction. Later the family shifted to Islamabad once Zafar Iqbal got a job there. Having few gently sloping down tears in her eyes, Zubaida Khanum remembers how her son was always concerned to take care of her happiness and health. Even on the night of 27th June 09, the night before his shahadat, Tahir talked to her on telephone and asked about her health. “It was a brief talk which was very unusual. He just asked about my health and requested to pray for his battalion” recalls the old mother. The way he said goodbye was aching for her but then thinking of his role as commanding officer of brave soldiers gave her some satisfaction. She knew that soon he will be with her as he had not availed vacations for last three months and he was also due for moving to Turkey on a special assignment. “I waited for him during entire month of June that he would come on leave but then I received his dead body covered in national flag. This is how God Almighty wanted and that is the way the great sons like Tahir depart. I am proud of him and pray that my son's sacrifice should bring peace to my country. I pray for Pakistan Army to succeed in every field. We owe everything to this land and if we have to sacrifice more sons like Tahir for keeping the Flag high, we must not hesitate for a moment”, adds the valiant mother. Who can surmount this Himalayan Spirit?

“Though he was a complete family man, yet during the month of June 09, whenever I enquired about coming to home on vacations, he would always reply that he might not come as few of his soldiers had yet to avail the leave. It was his habit to talk in details about family routine issues, but during last week before his shahadat, he was always brief in his telephone calls. He would just talk for one or two minutes, enquire about the well being of the family and then ask to pray for success of his Battalion i.e., a renowned Baloch Regiment. He was too busy in planning and executing the operational tasks assigned to his Battalion. We also did not bother him as he used to tell me, “Iffat it is my Battalion and my soldiers who come first in priority. I love you all but then Army is my love too. I had taken oath to serve my country and I would do every thing possible to serve my Army and the Country”. It was his habit to often utter the slogan “Pak Army-Zindabad”. Once he was posted to Waziristan, he said to one of his friends who had already served in Swat that instead of returning from front as a Ghazi like him, he would choose to return as a Shaheed. He has fulfilled his promise. We are also happy that he died while 'Boots On' and met a shaheed's death. We know that he sacrificed for a cause and this cause is dear to us all. And we will do all to keep this cause of patriotism and nationalism alive in our hearts and deeds”. This was beginning of our talk with this frail lady with an Iron Will; Iffat Tahir, wife of Tahir Iqbal Shaheed. She is a lady with a passionate and un-daunting spirit to keep serving the country. She braves her huge loss with a patient smile and then talks incessantly about the cause of bringing stability and peace to the country for which her husband sacrificed his life. While talking about their happy days, she remembers the day with a nostalgic reflection once they got married on 11th October 1996. He was always caring and affectionate. Soon after marriage, we were posted to Junior Leadership Academy, Shinkiari. Tahir worked diligently to train young leadership of Pakistan Army. Later we went to Quetta in 1999 once Tahir was undergoing his staff course. After completion of the course, he was posted as Brigade Major to the Brigade fighting the battle with Indians on one of the highest battlefields of the world i.e., Siachin Glacier. During our twelve years of marriage, I always found Tahir as a great humanist whose heart was full of empathy and humility. He was always willing to help others. He would not care about his comfort or position and participate in even minor activities of all his acquaintances. “He was a good son, brother, father and an affectionate husband”, adds Iffat Tahir with a revered tone. He was a Hero, a Leader of his soldiers; to be praised and to be followed. “He was always passionate while talking about his soldiers. They were very dear to him. He used to open the 'Unit Complaint Box' himself after finishing the routine work at night and then ensured solution of the problems”. As a caring father, “he was very much concerned about education of Abu Bakar and Hassan. He would buy them story books and then narrate them good moral stories. He was hopeful that one day they would also join the Army” adds a hopeful mother of her small sons. “I sometimes think that now who would take care of these kids who have lost their loving father? But then she also adds that Abu Bakar and Hassan are contented that their father is in Heaven and is among the God's chosen ones. They are sure that they will meet their father on the Day of Judgment”.

Then Iffat Tahir talks about the importance of the cause for which her husband offered his life. She says, “It is the responsibility of all the Mothers to train our future generations. We have a great task to perform. During this era of foreign media invasion and cultural onslaught, if we are unable to teach the true values of our religion and culture, tomorrow we would have to pay the price. We achieved this country after lots of sacrifices and now it is our responsibility to defend it at all cost”, she said in firm tone. Iffat Tahir further added, “I have taught Abu Bakar that after every prayer, must pray for Pakistan's progress, peace and stability. Pakistan is our identity and never forget to work for the betterment of this country”. Sometimes Abu Bakar asks me, “if Quaid-i-Azam was alive at this time, would Pakistan be the same as it is now? She has no sure answer but tells him about her firm resolve to work relentlessly for making this country according to the dreams of our beloved Quaid. This resolve, pledge and ambition have overshadowed the great loss the lady has suffered. And now serving the Motherland is her agenda like her patriotic husband.

I moved back to my office after completing the interview deeply engrossed in thoughts and emotions. These are the real heroes and national assets who have offered their share of sacrifice to the country but still volunteer to keep the national flag high at all cost. They are ready to again sacrifice for the country. No loss has wavered their faith and determination to serve the nation. If she and many more 'daughters of Pakistan' are willing to sacrifice, no power in the world can damage Pakistan. But now I am faced with the most serious unanswered question, “What is my share and where is our share in this whole struggle for stability of Pakistan?”
