During the 80s, the Pakistani stage dramas were cropping up like mushrooms.
It was pure family entertainment at it's best, and artists like Omar Sharif became house hold names.
But there were others, like Amanullha, Sohail Ahmed, and Babu Babrial, to name a few who entertained the audiences with sheer raw talent. It was a great
pick me up from the run down Pakistani films, where after all the topsy turvy, a marriage between the Hero and his leading lady was always guarnteed.
However after a decade or so, we are probably again left at the mercy of the Evernew studios or something, where even breaking a "Matka" is deemed as an
aggression by the hero, badly in need of an hair cut.
With the demise of Hasina Moeen, and Fatima Bajia, even PTV drama serials are not up to the mark, and regardless to the fact my Punjabi is not quite to the
acceptable levels, I still enjoyed the alternative stage shows, but sadly they seem to be a thing of the past. Most of you may recall dozens of titles, but as the
saying goes, one to watch before dying is, "Begum Meri BBC". With Omar Sharif and Wasim Abbas in lead role.
Perhaps you folks can recomend others.

Pakistani stage Drama were quite popular when i was a kid. but then due to the influx of bhindiwood many Pakistanis stopped watching Pakistani stage dramas. and one trend which i noticed is that the Pakistani stage dramas started to become more indecent and vulgar. maybe they wanted to keep up with the competition i.e. bhindiwood.
This is the flag of Islam, for you cannot separate the Muslim league from Islam. Many people misunderstand us when we talk of Islam, particularly our Hindu friends. When we say this flag is the flag of Islam, they think that we are introducing religion into politics, A FACT OF WHICH WE ARE PROUD. Islam gives us a complete code. It is not only a religion, but it contains laws, philosophy and politics. It contains everything that matters to a man from morning to night. When we talk of Islam, we take it as an all embracing word.

LOL i agree, i watch quite alot of Punjabi Stage Dramas, ive watched Urdu Dramas as well, but apart from few things in the Drama especially that mujara they have the dramas are cool. Yeh if they take the lady part out of it that its makes these dramas, despite the vulgar in it, really good.
They also have political message in Dramas, i remember two Dramas one was when mushy made it compulsry for MPs to have a degree, they made really nice Drama on it, its called METHI BARYANI. There was another on the Hadood laws passed by government, even though these dramas are vulgar they had really good message and that was how our society will head toward the path of western world in imoral activities.
Beside that there acting, espeically by Sohial Ahmed is awasome.
Also PUNJABI TOTAY dubbing on you tube is great and it show the artisitc side of Pakistani ppl, ive seen Indians trying to copy punjabis totay but they failed miserably as they dont have the creative content that ppl from Pakistan had. In Pakistan there is funny dubbing of english movies available, again very creative and thoughtful...
Also Indian sikhs are addicated to Punjabi Dramas every where. so its not all bollywood gloom at all.

problem with dramas is that pakistanis are obsessed with urdu, so hindi dramas can easily act as a subtitute....therfore, the punjabi dramas will falter since ppl will go away from them and i guess only the sikhs will be interested in them....pakistan needs to promote its native languages punjabi, sindhi, pashto, etc. so that people are taught in them and encouraged to create dramas, shows, movies, etc. in those languages rather than just urdu which is hard to compete with the hindi dramas

Put it this way, wouldn't watch a Hindi drama to even save my self.
Would prefer an Urdu classic any day, stage dramas were a break from the mould, but sadly it's died down.
What can compete with the likes of, Dhoop Kinarey, Shakast-e-Arzoo, Nangey Paoon, and Dhouwan, to name a few.

Arts and culture cannot survive in a country where it is not encouraged and is in fact discouraged. What you call stage drama's, I would call theatre, after all that is what it is. Theatre is a great part of culture and civil society, the world over.
Theatre can be used to send messages, tackle issues, entertain and more.
To encourage theatre you need to make it family friendly, theatre is somewhere were families should be able to go, watch a play, a show, have a meal afterwards, make a night out of things.
It should also be mobile, great shows and great acts should travel nationwide so that everyone can see them. Also it needs to be accessable. It seems we have a pool of talent and that same pool is used again and again. How amny fresh faces do you ever see?

LOL i agree to some extent, we need to take some junk out of it, but to say its all crap and should be closed down for ever is wrong. There is great tallent in there and 1 watch the dramas and most of the time FF the crap part.

LOL Nargis.... ask any Sardar about her, they go crazy for her. Yeh she's actress (expired or shall is say ex hera mandi) and has big affairs with high ranking ppl and in DRAMAs she get so much crap about all this.
The ppl im talking about would make these dramas very play unclean non family entertainment, but it also depends who is the director. Naseem Viki would gurantee you some form of crap in it.
Mindyou when u watch the recording of these Dramas(Gulabi), you will find even Niqabis present in the audience.

dont blame bollywood or anybody else. My family used to watch the dramas together and then we stopped cause they turned vulgar. they turned into adult entertainment from family entertainment.
the dances that were like songs in the movies, turned into full time mujra.
watch shartiya mithay. It was the first true mega hit. it spawned a movie too.

I personally think when it comes to non scripted improvisation, legends of punjabi dramas (suhail or amman ulah or mastana) are way ahead of Omar.
Oh by the way those who wouldnt know, Mastana, suhail and amman were first introduced through PTV. roles of suhail and mastana were critically acclaimed.
