LAHORE: The North Cantonment police on Wednesday booked a religious teacher of a private school for severely torturing and injuring a student with the pointed end of a pencil.

Qari Ilyas, the teacher in the Iqra Taleem-ul-Itfal, Old Officers Colony, hit nine-year-old Faizan, son of senior journalist Rana Sohail, several times on his face with the sharpened edge of the pencil for making noise in the classroom.

As a result, the student received injuries to his nose and forehead from where blood trickled out. Qari Ilyas also beat him up severely. The injured boy was shifted to a hospital where doctors provided him with first aid. The parents of Faizan told The News that their son was still under psychological pressure and had been terrorised.

That is absolutely unacceptable. This Qari was out of line and he needs to be straightened out. No wonder we are religiously so incompetent when our teachers are incompetent and the students we send to religious schools are the ones we feel have no chance at normal school.
