The Yakhont, SS-N-26 NATO-codename, is an advanced supersonic, long range, anti-ship missile intended for surface ships, submarines and coastal defense batteries. It is a liquid fuel ramjet-powered version of SS-N-7 Starbright missile enabled to be launched by canisters and VLS. The missile features an inertial navigation system to reach the target area with an active radar homing in the terminal phase of the flight. It has been designed to operate in severe countermeasure environments and features improved maneuverability and reduced signatures over the SS-N-7 for improved survivability.

The Yakhont is a fire and forget missile and features several launch modes in accordance with the target characteristics and location. The missile can use a high-low flight pattern for targets located at up to 300 km. The low-low flight pattern can be used against targets at ranges of 120 km or against well protected targets in order to be surprised minimizing its reaction time against the incoming missile and optimizing the missile's kill probability. During the low flight profile the Yakhont missile is able to fly at altitudes between 5 and 15 meters like a sea-skimming missile.

The Yakhont is intended as a Russian surface ships and submarines anti-ship missile. It has been designed to defeat ships protected by the US AEGIS weapon system and its European counterparts.

Besides, the facade of joint production notwithstanding, our own Brahmos is really a derivative of the Russian Yakhont missile, tweaked to conform to the limitations of the MTCR regime. Acquisition of critical missile components and technology from abroad by Pakistan should not have been difficult for our intelligence agencies to detect. Our country has good relations with western nations and Ukraine from where the electronics for the Babur were probably sourced. There are understandable difficulties in penetrating a closed society like China. However, Indian intelligence can compensate by better infiltrating Pakistan and maintaining closer liason with intelligence agencies of other friendly countries. I for one would be very surprised if the Mossad was not aware of it! Afterall, the Babur could easily find its way into Iranian and Palestinian hands!

A 2,500-kilogram Yakhont missile, equipped with a ramjet engine, was designed for surface and air launch. The version designed for surface launch was also equipped with a so-called launching-accelerator stage, burning solid fuel. Depending on the launch platform, the Yakhont had a range of 120 to 300 kilometers and a speed of 750 meters per second. It was capable of carrying 200 kilogram of explosives. (132)

For that final 'all-up' test,
the missile's intended target, a decommissioned ship,

positioning system guidance) already gives the Yakhont
a limited capability against some ground targets, but
offering a fully-fledged land-attack variant of the
export-dedicated Yakhont-M takes the weapon into a
whole new arena. NPO Mash says that the Yakhont-M
adheres to the 300 km range restriction imposed by the
MTCR agreement, but the missile's basic design is
clearly capable of exceeding this figure. According to
the BrahMos joint venture company, the missile will be
available for export to 'friendly countries' once it
enters production - expected by the end of this year
or in early 2006. Indonesia has already been
identified as an interested potential customer, and
the list of possible BrahMos users includes any air
force operating an Su-30M 'Flanker' such as Malaysia

Q. Could you describe the background of the BrahMos project? Who initiated it? How did the idea originate? How successful is its R&D? Is it keeping to schedule? When is it expected to begin generating commercial profits?

A. Acting on instructions from the Soviet government, NPO Mashinostroyenia was, in 1989, engaged in a number of research and technological consultations with Indian specialists on military-technical cooperation. Teams of Russian specialists in aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, materials dynamics, and designers and mathematicians traveled to India, as the Indians were looking to become world leaders in rocket engineering, even though they lacked specialists and proper computers.

The next stage in the interaction between NPO Mashinostroyenia and the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) came in the form of a proposal by Dr. Abdul Kalam, then head of the DRDO and later president of India. Dr. Kalam suggested that we should not limit ourselves to mere consultation and urged the establishment of a joint venture to work together on the research, development, manufacture and marketing of anti-ship cruise missile systems. After a brief discussion, this proposal was forwarded to the Russian government.

It hardly makes sense to describe how difficult it was for Russia to believe in this undertaking. However, after getting the go-ahead from the president in 1997, the Russian government finally signed an agreement with the Indian government to set up such a joint venture based on a common charter and with $250 million in capital, with the two countries contributing roughly equal amounts of money to jointly exploit the results of some relevant groundwork that the two countries had already done.

NPO Mashinostroyenia and the DRDO were selected to become the co-founders and shareholders of this Russian-Indian organization, which is headquartered in New Delhi.

The history behind the name of the joint venture, BrahMos, is interesting and unusual. Dr. Kalam had been on a trip to Russia, where he had visited St. Petersburg and walked along the banks of the Neva - he later even wrote a poem about this river. He suggested that the enterprise be called BrahmNev, combining the names of the prominent Indian and Russian rivers. We pointed out that Mashinostroyenia is located in the Moscow region, so it would be more proper to take the name from the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. This is how this name - BrahMos - appeared.

The first launch of a missile built by the joint venture took place at the Chandipur range in India on June 12, 2001. It was totally successful, even though the launch program was quite complicated.

Now that the work of both partners in the joint venture has been praised and the venture is seen to be working efficiently, Russia and India really need to replicate this cooperation in the high-tech field.

Q. What do the founders of the BrahMos joint venture think about its current performance?

Cooperation between NPO Mashinostroyenia and India, which began in 1998, has so far withstood the test of time and the challenge of complicated projects, thus laying the foundations for further achievements. BrahMos was the brainchild of two presidents. It will not only advance the two countries' existing technology but also develop know-how for the 21st century.

We have achieved the following results:

All conditions have been met for the switch to serial production of the joint version of the missile in 2004. On May 26, 2003, the joint venture was renamed BrahMos Aerospace, indicating that its plans are not only limited to cruise missile systems.

Q. Do you have any plans to continue working with your Indian partners after the BrahMos project has been completed? Do you have plans to build a PJ-10 version for aircraft or submarines, or to use it to deliver strikes on land targets?

A. Naturally there are plans to continue working together following the completion of the BrahMos project. Our creative cooperation thus far gives grounds to expect fruitful and reliable work for years to come, especially bearing in mind that both the Russian and Indian leaders value this cooperation. Joint work between equals is an extremely productive form of partnership for countries that view each other as strategic partners.

Q. How do the PJ-10 missiles differ from others that India has at its disposal, primarily those of the Club family?

A. First, the BrahMos missiles boast extremely good technical and tactical characteristics for this class of missile, and they can be used successfully against any enemy, including the most powerful. Second, they can be attached to various carriers, such as surface vessels, submarines, self-propelled launchers, or warplanes. Third, they are based on a missile commissioned for the Russian Navy in 2002. Fourth, these missiles are to be produced jointly at both Russian and Indian plants. Each of these Russian missiles and their families (Uran, Club, and Yakhont-BrahMos) occupies its own niche in the weapons system and has its specific tasks.

When bewildered naval brass and scientists later overflow the scene in a helicopter there was only flotsam. It was like arriving at the aftermath of a battle,” recalls Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, chief executive officer and managing director of the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL).

The 10th and final test of the missile last fortnight, the first of a combat prototype (with a live warhead) heralded the formal induction of the missile less than four years after its first trial. It marks a quantum leap for the armed forces which are acquiring a formidable force multiplier. Cruise missiles are like kamikaze aircraft which are piloted by an onboard computer using pre-fed co-ordinates and guided by satellites. Unlike ballistic missiles which exit the atmosphere vertically and re-enter to free fall on their targets, cruise missiles follow a flat trajectory and “cruise” on their own power to the target.

While ballistic missiles like Prithvi and Agni are like hammers, the BrahMos is like a surgeon’s scalpel. Deadly accurate—officials boast it can fly into a football goal post 300 km away— it can be used to mount high speed precision strikes against an array of surface targets ranging from warships to bunkers, airfields, command posts and infrastructure facilities.

Because the BrahMos is a universal missile—it can be launched from multi dimensional platforms like aircraft, warships, submarines, trucks and land-based silos—It can be used by all three armed forces. This enables standardisation and mass production, which result not only in significant cost savings but also quality control on the missiles produced in batches.

Mass production of the missile has commenced and the company expects to supply the Indian armed forces with 1,000 missiles by 2015. BrahMos officials are cagey about revealing the cost of the missile. Defence analysts say it is roughly Rs.10 crore per missile.

The BrahMos will equip all major Indian naval warships like the three under construction Project 15A destroyers and project Project 17 frigates and will be retrofitted on one existing warship each year. “The missiles sheer speed means it can inflict heavy damage on targets and renders itself immune to known countermeasures”, says a senior naval officer. “Besides, it can replace at least three imported missile types currently being used by the navy.”

A test for the army’s variant In Pokhran last December, equipped with special image processing software to fly over land, saw the missile search and destroy a 50-cm-thick concrete bunker with pinpoint precision. Last week in Hyderabad, the army raised and began training its first core group to man the missile which it will induct by 2007. Around this time, the air force variant, lighter by one tonne, will begin trials to equip specially modified Su-3OMKI fighter-bombers which will carry up to three missiles each.

In the crowded missile menagerie, supersonic cruise missiles are extremely rare birds, a technology perfected only by Russia. (China operates the bulky Russian-supplied first generation supersonic Moskit missile). Western supersonic cruise missiles are still in the development stage—most missiles like the Harpoon and Tomahawk are powered by solid rocket fuel or turbojet engines and trundle along at subsonic speeds. The BrahMos, however, flies at the speed of a 7.62-mm rifle bullet, thanks to a liquid kerosene ramjet engine. A solid first stage or booster blasts the missile to supersonic speed and then drops off.

Yes. BAPL will have plant in both Russia and India. Primarily it will inducted into RuN, IN and IA later third countries. 8-10 countries wants Brahmos but Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam to get it first.

Untill now one IN DDG equipped with Brahmos.

Its not easy to compare to near identical missiles just by looking at them, or reading bias and exaggerated hyped up reports but you only have to read some of my replies, I’m the undisputed champion of missilery  

Yakhont can travel longer distances while the brahmos cannot
Yakhont can travel 50 meters above see level brahmos  cannot
Yakhont weighs less then brahmos so more pay load
Yakhont has sophisticated RUSSIAN technology brahmos has third world technology
Yakhont probably travels faster then brahmos due to better Materials used in the cone inlet defuser

Yakhont is pure Russian technology far more sophisticated then brahmos

An advantage that is possessed by the Brahmos missile as compared to the Babar missile is that, an air-launched version of the Brahmos missile has been proposed, whereas such an announcement has not been made in case of the Babar missile [air-launched versions of the Tomahawk missile are not in existence either].

come on dude. you calling this a negative point? air launch is a piece of cake when you compare to sub launch and pak is soon to test sub launch (our admiral said that).

If americans did not want a cruise missile on AC then there was a reason for that. they dont need ac. they can send tomahawk from any where in the sea.

10-15 meter is easy kill over sea level. on the ground its completely different game. supersonics are not that manuverable to avoid obstacles on ground. Ever wonder why it reduces to 10-15 meter when it close to enemey and not always maitaing 10-15 meter height. area like pothohar in pakistani punjab can really test a cruise missile skills. (you most prolly wont know what i am talking about unless you have seen the landscape yourself)

Besides, the capability of interception of sea-skimming and sub-sonic missiles such as the Exocet and Harpoon missiles is possessed by the Barak and the Trishul SAM systems of India. Since the speed of cruise of the Babar missile is sub-sonic and operation in the sea-skimming role is possible, the interception of the incoming Babar missiles by ships and terrestrial entities of India is possible.

yahya bro if ur amazed at looking at the topic title (THANKS TO RUSSIA WE HAVE A YAKHONT), its a satire on the indians . before coming to conclusions at least read the stuff that has been posted which says that BRAHMOS IS A COMPLETE REPLICA OF YAKHONT, THEN FOR WHAT REASON THE INDIANS R SO HAPPY WHEN INFACT THEY HAVE BOUGHT THE MISSILE FROM RUSSIA

#1 Babur is not gonna stop Brahmos, its a knowledge of retaliation for the Indians.
#2 Babur is still in it's early stages where as Brahmos has completed all the tests and can be fire from Land/Air and water and it's serial productions is also started.

So it's quiet early to get to any conclusion.
