South Korea only has 2 votes? WTF?!

They would whoop the JMSDF and PLAN's arses!

They have a good high-tech navy but lacks of many things that are key to be the most powerfull navy in this region.

1. Aircraft carriers for power projection.
2. Nuclear submarines and underwater launched missiles.
3. LACM (like Tomahawk, eg. Iraq war).
4. Large LPD.
5. Huge number of advanced DDG, stealth FFG and corvettes.
6. 21st century warfare tools like satellites for tracking & sea recon, netcentric warfare, long range air-defense, supersonic stealthy AShM etc.

SK is pretty good in points 5 and 6 but far behind in other key tools.............

actually I wanted to say that we already have such a formidable navy and if we add something like rafale or SH then we will have number1 navy much before 2020......we wont even need to wait till 2020....anyway since you mentioned karwar in your post let me tell you its my mom's village where I am going 2morow.....wish me happy and safe journey......

pls dont compare SH with Rafale. and Mig-29K thats been customized for the Navy along with future NLCA are more than enough for  Indian Navy's requirments.......

My point was u forgot to add the most potent ship projected by Indian Navy: the P-17A. The RFP been sent to six shipyards around the world (2 US, 1 Russian, 2 Euro, 1 South Korea and Lockheed Martin already replied to the RFP) for developing and production of a next generation stealth frigate. 7 ships for $ 8 bn. South Korea has a GDP that's slightly less than that of India and Russia + their shipbuilding industry is the best in the world in terms of cost + quality.

I vote China not because I am a Chinese. By 2020 China will be able to induct two carriers into service. In connection with carrier battle grouping China will have to produce more and better air defense ships with, according to rumors in Chinese forum, installation of laser guns. For anti-ship or land attack capability you would likely see disclosure of supersonic missiles and cruise missiles in a year or two. Chinese subs are being developed to another tech level and PLAN might be the only navy with significant numbers of SSNs.

Nobody else in Asia invests so much on R&D of naval techs these days.

Both S Korean and Japanese navies are high tech based. But they won't add much of numbers before or after 2020. Indian navy is an ambitious one but India don't have much indigenous tech or industrial capacity. Their carriers do not even have the credible ability of self protection and it won't change by 2020.

Indian Navy To Receive Technology To Prevent Ship Detection


Tuesday 30th of October 2007 Indigenous warship technology for evading detection by enemy ships and submarines will be handed over to the Indian Navy in Vishakapatnam on Wednesday.

A. Sivathanu Pillai, chief controller (R&D) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will hand over the products to Vice-Admiral D.S.P. Varma, chief of materials at the Naval Headquarters.

The Vishakapatnam-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) has developed the technologies.

'These technologies are aimed for use in modern warships under design and construction. NSTL has nurtured these technologies in the recent past and is progressing strongly towards self-reliance in this critical arena,' a defence ministry release said Tuesday.

'Warship technology is a multi-disciplinary field covering different aspects such as acoustics and electro-magnetics covering a wide band of frequencies. An inter-disciplinary and holistic approach has been adopted in developing these products,' the release added.

NSTL has developed a number of products to avert damages to naval ships in enemy attacks.

Among the products developed are acoustics enclosures, acoustic silencers, double stage vibration isolation systems, radar transparent ladders, stanchions, camouflage screens, and composite blowers.

'All these products were subjected to extensive laboratory and shipboard evaluations. After successful evaluations, these products have been accepted for induction into the Indian Navy,' the release said.

huh? all the important air defense radar on Delhi and Project 17 are not indigenous.
Seriously, if you have no idea what kind of radar and sonar are used on Chinese ships, don't make comments like this.
You got 40 years of experience operating tiny carriers.  When it come to operate a large conventional carrier, you got about as much experience as China does.

“It takes half a century to build a navy,” said India’s Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta a year ago and he repeated that yesterday at a press conference in New Delhi.  
  
India’s smallest service, which celebrates Navy Day today, is on track to build indigenously one of the most modern navies in the Asia-Pacific region.  
  
Much of that construction is taking place here, at the Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. Even with a host of craftsmen swarming over the four major warships being fitted out here, after having already been launched — three Shivalik-class frigates and one Kolkata-class destroyer — the ships radiate power as well as aesthetics.  
  
India has developed a tradition of making not just capable but also beautiful warships. At a major International Fleet Review in the UK in 2005, the Duke of Edinburgh, a naval veteran himself, interrupted his schedule to compliment the INS Mysore as the handsomest warship in the review.  
  
But the present construction facilities at MDL, and at the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) other two shipyards at Goa and at Garden Reach in Kolkata, are struggling to build enough warships to make up for the decade-long hiatus from the mid-1980s, when not a single warship was ordered due to paucity of funds.  
  
In addition, the navy needs replacements for an average of five warships that complete their service lives each year. The MoD’s sharpest focus, therefore, is now on creating world-class shipyards that can churn out efficiently, the warships that the navy needs.  
  
Vice Admiral Krishnan, the chairman of MDL, revealed to Business Standard that a global tender is being floated for a top-class foreign shipyard that will partner India’s defence shipyards in their transformation to the “modular” form of shipbuilding.  
  
Within six months, some 8-10 global shipbuilders, including Northrop Grumman from the US, DCN from France, Hyundai from Korea, Hyundai, and British shipbuilder, Bath Iron Works, will each receive a Request for Proposals (RFP) for becoming India’s partner in modular shipbuilding.  
  
The traditional method of building warships involves building the hull and then launching it into water. Once that is afloat, hundreds of craftsmen labour for months in cramped and dangerous conditions, installing heavy equipment, like engines and electronics, and crawling through the ship’s innards to lay hundreds of miles of electrical cables and pipelines.  
  
In contrast, modular shipbuilding involves building the ship in huge 300-tonne blocks, in the friendly conditions of a “modular workshop”.  
  
The craftsmen enjoy easier access, and once the blocks are ready, an enormous overhead “Goliath Crane” carries the 300-tonne blocks to a dry dock where they are assembled into a warship.  
  
This modular method will be used to build the navy’s next-generation warships, three futuristic Project 17-A stealth frigates.  
  
The foreign shipyard partner that wins the tender for modular construction will build one Project 17-A frigate abroad, using craftsmen from MDL and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.  
  
This will be the learning process, after which MDL and GRSE will each construct one Project 17-A frigate in their new modular shipyards.  
  
Secretary of Defence Production, KP Singh told Business Standard, “Either one or two (Project 17-A warships) will be constructed in the foreign yards, but by our men, so that they will get trained to those systems. We’ll be spending workers (on the construction)… that is the idea.”  
  
The navy would have preferred to construct in Indian yards. Vice Admiral Birinder Randhawa, until last week the Indian Navy’s Controller of Warships Production and Acquisition, says that constructing one warship abroad is part of the price for getting the know-how for modular shipbuilding.  
  
Admiral Randhawa says, “Nobody wants to part with this technology without getting orders in their own yard.”  
  
While modular construction could make warship building faster, the MoD and the navy are also grappling with another major bottleneck in warship building: warship design. But there’s also a plan to overcome that hurdle.

no doubt will be there because as u dont know about PLAN you also dont know about japan and south korea. so you dont know anything about plan, IN, Japanese Navy and South Korean Navy.

Best Asian Navies by 2020...

1. Indian Navy ( 3/4 aircraft carriers, best nuclear submarines: Akula-III ATV etc, superior frigates and destroyers than others: like P-17A, P-28 etc, best SSK: Scorpene and second line sub, best MMA: Boeing P-8I)

2. Japanese Navy (huge good surface and submarines: kongo class)

3. South Korean Navy (KDX-III class ships alone can sink whole PLAN surface ships)
