Firstly I totally agree with most of this article, especially concerning Pakistan helping in whatever way it can, especially with India. Where I don't like this article is the inferring that the 'evil West is willing to help' but Muslim states are lacking and being stingy. Infact Saudia Arabia pledged almost as much money as the States did initially.
Here in the UK, Tony Blair was absolutely lambasted (by many) for pledging such a small amount in aid for the Tsunami victims yet was willing to arm the US invasion of Iraq to the tune of 10's of Billions. This was the case especially members of UK's parliament who were opposed to this evil war. Blair was forced to increase it. Once the British raised the amount, the Japanese (who have bankrolled the US in Iraq with Billions) increased their miserly amounts.
The same thing happened with the filthy regime in the Whitehouse. Bush has been slaughtered for asking congress for another 100 Billion dollars for Iraq, yet pledged around $15million initially for such a disaster.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=363515
Bush/Blair/Japs etc have been forced to give more because of their hypocrisy in readily making available 1000's times that amount for the oppression in Iraq.
Check this website, which bollox's Bush.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/12/30/...editorial.reut/
So before you forget the genocide the Americans, British, Japanese are committing against Muslims and before you start praising these evil marchodths, they do so because not for love of their fellow human being. Check the site by Islamic Relief about the Muslim donations by individuals.

I agree with the previous post that the west was forced to give money. Here in the US, every media outlet and dozens of aid organizations lambasted the White House for the indeed stingy offering at first. They are simply trying to prove everybody wrong now.
And I will add that our economy here in America has a GDP of 10 TRILLION DOLLARS. What is 350 Million compared to this?
Also - Pakistan and many Arab states are all giving something. I am currently in Saudi Arabia during my holidays from university studying at Umm ul Qurr'a University in Makkah. By Allah, ever since the tsunami hit, not a day goes by when a group of brothers, from all nations, come and ask for donations to help the effort and I can't even count how many Princes, Businessmen and influential people have donated millions of dollars to help the suffering people.
May Allah reward all those who give freely for the sake of Allah in this most noble cause.

You are such a gullible person to buy into this East vs. West, Muslims vs. Rest kind of mindset. 'Muslims' are not stingy or uncaring as much as 'the West' is benevolent toward others. There are simply rich and poor countries. In rich countries there are more resources of material and luxury of time to be more philanthropic toward others than poorer countries. As an example, you will not see any Sub-Saharan African countries rushing to provide relief--and they are mostly not Muslim countries.
We are all humans first. Not anything else. What drives some persons to do some things in some countries can easily be replicated in far off places if similar conditions arise. Couching such events in religiosity only shows your lack of understanding and a deep sense of inferiority complex.

Muslims have been doing alot. There are several muslim charities already at work -- however a huge problem for them is the reluctance of most muslims on donating to muslim charities here in the west because of.. you know what. But still, donations are comming... in the millions!
As someone up there compiled a list - the more richer "muslim" nations have pitched in significantly.
Unfortunately, we are too freggin poor to donate in multi million figures - the nations who could, are already up there. Thats the reason why our contributions have been insignificant on the global front.
But i absolutely disagree - You cant squeeze blood from stone. Where can most muslim countries get such massive donations from?? they cant!
Having said that.. indeed, i must praise the western - "non muslim" nations for the work theyve done. Its absolutely wonderful and a reminder to the extreme ones amongst us that you cant paint everything with the same brush. Those people are involved in the relief effort for humanity, and its really commendable.

Saudia can easily give 100 million. MAybe the individual princes are doing it, but we are talking here about the country. Even in west people are collecting million, in addition to what the governments have given. So dont count that.
Saudia can pay a lot more. Past year they have made billion in additional income due to high oil price and still they are giving 10 million! What a shame! If they would give zakat on their deposits it would be in billions!
Same goes for iran! What has iran done? What about libya? what about kuwait?
Actually these are egoistic greedy people, at government level. They dont care for islam or even humans. And I am sure they will be punished for this sooner or later and then they will ask for help and nobody is going to come to their aid.

Qatar I believe decided to give $1Bn dollars, but no confirmation of that. Which is really good. When Pakistan can do this much, Arabs and even the Iranians are very much capable of doing a whole lot more.
This is the best kind of competition to be in.

Muslim Countries are contributing. Mush has opened a president relief fund in a television appeal and contributions are pouring in. me and my immiediate family have made significant contributions. Too bad this is not carried on CNN or BBC. We dont expect any coverage - but bigoted attitudes dont help.
I just saw rerun after rerun of US helo droping a couple of relief supplies in Aceh. Counting the number of times it was run - I would say ten thousand packets were delivered.

We were one of the first to extend our hands in the relief effort after this disaster hit the region. Unlike anyone here who is just here to rant on why Pakistan is not helping or doing enough here are some of the proof our government and its people helping out the region.

In the face of the greatest tragedies, the Muslim ummah remains silent, while western charities and public spring into motion
Anees Jillani
It is said that a friend in need is a friend indeed. The tsunami struck in the morning and a Japanese team of doctors and nurses were on their way to Indonesia and Thailand by that evening. The same day, Australia's Foreign Minister promised to send seven million dollars (increased to $30 million at the time of writing). India, itself a tsunami victim, sent over a dozen helicopters the same evening. The British, German and some other European governments followed suit. Canada has donated more than $30 million.
But where on earth has the Ummah gone? The President of Pakistan made a brief reference to the disaster in his recent speech and the government declared support of $100,000. This, from the world's seventh nuclear power, with missiles capable of reaching targets thousands of miles away, for a disaster of this magnitude to neighbouring countries that are also South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) members, from the current SAARC Chair. Surely, we can do better than this. The least we could do is to send troops to rescue victims and help restoration efforts.
But then, our response has always been pathetic. During the Bam earthquake in Iran, it took our army medical team almost three weeks to reach the place, although Bam is situated just across Balochistan and the British with their sniffing dogs were there within 24 hours. When will we stop playing `plot-plot' in our defence housing societies and wake up to our responsibilities in the world community? Or is our job confined to issuing identical condolence statements issued within minutes, drafted by a section officer. Why does the media even report these statements. Or is our job and for that matter the whole of ummah confined to simply exporting jihad? And where are the tabligis - who should concentrate more on the humanitarian aspects of life than the length of their pyjamas.
But why single out Pakistan, when the oil rich Arab countries appear unmoved? Among the richest countries in the world, they have donated relatively meagre amounts -- Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE have together pledged $22 million.
It is at times like these that one cannot help saluting Westerners. I was in North Carolina one Christmas Eve when a local television channel on its six o'clock news showed a homeless family shivering without adequate clothes. By ten o'clock, the same channel made a fervent appeal to stop sending stuff for this family - the TV channel already had two rooms full to the roof with warm clothing and food items donated within four hours by local residents.
Whether Rwanda, Bosnia, Afghanistan or the tsunami, it is only the West and Japan who respond. Our job is confined to raising objections and demanding more. We hold out our begging bowl and are willing to accept aid and grants from any country of the world to conduct our immunisation programmes and to run our schools properly, but have the nerve to conduct nuclear tests and undertake missile launches with our own money.
Bosnian women were being raped for months and the entire Islamic world watched in silence. It was only the West that eventually came to their rescue. Afghanistan bled for more than ten years after the withdrawal of the Soviet troops while the West adopted a hands-off policy, particularly after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban. All we could give Afghanistan was more land mines and sub-machine guns to fight each other. We did not bother to build a single school, hospital or bridge during the five years of Taliban rule.
The British public, in the past four days, has donated 25 million pounds to help the tsunami victims. The West has proven time and again that it responds to human needs anywhere in the world regardless of colour, nationality or religion. Our concern is confined to fellow Muslims but most times even that is confined to simple condolence messages; as for the rest, behead them because they are not going to heaven anyway.

don't know how much it has gone upto
Pak sent Navy Ships
Pak airlifted meds and food supplies
We're going around collecting small supplies
Pak has done a lot more than its share and even offered to help arch rivals India. The Ummah's response has been late, but Pakistan was the 1st Nation to start sending supplies to Sri Lanka.

calling someone agent of raw would not change the reality!
I see that pakistan is helping, but ummah is not! They have not even done 10% of what they can!
As far as pakistan is concernd, they sent the ships to indonesia on 3rd jan, while the quake came on 26 dec. Do you think this is a very good response?
Dont be fools! Omarleeds have given a list of news items. The numbers 1,4,5,6 deal with one SINGLE action i.e. sending ships to indonesia. Does that make you feel like pakistan has sent 4 times different ships? its says, pak decided to send, mush asks for help, pak will send, pak is sending, and finally pak has sent! its repeat of same thing over 5 times!
total by pak so far is: (according to the list of 20 news items by omarleeds)
1. two ships and two planes to indonesia on 3rd jan 2005: 9 days after the quake
2. decids to send 2 ships to srilanka on 2nd jan : 8 das after the quake and i dont know if they have departed or not.
3. sent military personnel to indonesia and srilanka on 2nd jan 2005: 8 days after the quake.
Edhi sent 5 tons of supplies and 12 docs to srilanka on 2nd jan.
Well, you may call it whatever you want, I will call it pathetic!
I also condemn american actions. They were even more late then pakistan in this regard. And only after heavy criticism by world media did they actually do something.
Saudia, uae, qatar etc. have still not dopne anything substantial. Donating money is not the priority. You cannt eat dollars!
If muslim countries had any brains they should form an emergency response force, equip it with medical staf and machines. Build up an emergency store of supplies. And in case of desaster rapidly go in and help the people with actions. I think such a force can be created with less then 100 million. And whole ummah should be able to bring it up somehow.
Keeping them in ready state will not cost much either.

From correspondents in Port Blair
January 05, 2005
SHIPS scoured the seas yesterday for thousands of bodies still missing in India's Andaman and Nicobar islands, as India refused offers of foreign aid for the ravaged archipelago amid mounting clamour for relief from survivors.
The death toll for the islands was 832 as of last night, while the number missing, most presumed dead, was 5801.
The overall Indian toll from the December 26 disaster was at least 9571 dead and 5914 missing, the Government said.
However, there was one survival story yesterday when the Indian Coast Guard rescued four Indonesian fisherman who had been adrift without food and water since the tsunamis struck.
The hunt for bodies off the archipelago, which is home to 356,000 people and contains both military bases and remote tribes, came as India said relief was proceeding on a "war footing" amid growing calls for help from many of the 38 inhabited islands.
"We're grateful to governments which want to help but as of now we have the resources," junior Home Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said.
But survivors told a different story.
"They're only talking big while we're starving. This shouldn't be made into some politics," said Manik Guin, a survivor from Hut Bay, one of the devastated islands, after being evacuated.
The stepped-up relief drive followed reports that a civilian administrator was seized by hungry survivors in the Nicobar islands at the weekend.
He was freed hours later after promising to provide more food.
Foreign aid agencies in the capital, Port Blair, have expressed anger at the rejection of their offers of help for the islands - many of which are out of bounds to mainland Indians and foreigners due to security concerns and a desire to protect endangered Stone Age tribes from outsiders.
With India pushing for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, New Delhi has been keen to show itself as a regional power rather than a victim and has dispatched aid to Sri Lanka and other countries hit by the tsunamis.
Lieutenant-General B.S. Thakur, who heads aid operations in the Andamans, said five naval ships and military aircraft were hopping between islands where thousands of soldiers, doctors and administrators were deployed in relief work.
Paramilitary troopers, soldiers and border guards also were brought in to scour dense mangroves for missing people, and planes were evacuating survivors from ravaged islands to relief camps, officials said.
India's director-general of health services S.K. Agarwal said there were no signs of any disease outbreaks, although sporadic cases of diarrhoea and malaria were being reported.
Teams of psychiatrists were also being sent to the islands to help thousands of traumatised survivors.

Arabs especially Saudis have become ever more rascist. If this was directed against America, its understandable. But nothing can explain them being lame in helping the Tsunami affected Sri Lankans and Indonesians. Be happy that Pakistanis ain't Arabs.
So far, Emirates Airlines is the only visible helper which is flying-in with food and water for Indonesia.

ABOARD THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN: US military crews are launching more than 100 helicopter flights a day from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln ferrying food, water and medicine to tsunami victims, a task they say is far more satisfactory than the Iraq war that seems only to destroy. “Oh yeah, no doubt,” said US Navy helicopter pilot Rachel Brainard. “Here we’re helping people, not destroying things.” “It’s the greatest thing to see all the smiling faces when we’re taking off,” she said on Tuesday. “They were so happy and grateful because they had nothing,” said Airman Emily Aleiwe. Other US ships are entering the region to deliver relief from a US military which has been sending most of its troops to Iraq. Desperate Indonesian villagers have rushed the choppers to grab supplies but they also are expressing a gratitude — something the US military has not seen much of in Iraq since invading the country in 2003 to oust President Saddam Hussein. War supporters predicted Iraqis would be so happy to get rid of Saddam they would greet US soldiers as conquering heroes, but instead violent Iraqi resistance has bogged down the US-led effort. “At least here we know it’s for a good cause. In Iraq we don’t know what the outcome is going to be,” said Airman Kimberly Kolar. “I don’t feel like I’ve done anything this meaningful in my life,” said Airman Carlos Lobo after a day working onshore in Indonesia to deliver aid. reuters

Seawater lies on both sides of a railroad track that was destroyed by tsunamis in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu
CAIRO, January – In a sign of unity in time of crisis, an Indian mosque became the main helper for thousands of Hindus and Christians hard-hit by the underwater quake-triggered killer tsunami.
‘‘We came to know when people came running to the masjid, minutes after it happened. We decided to do what we could do,’’ Mohammed Younus, president of the United Islamic Jamaat, was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
In a matter of few minutes, at least 3000 Muslims deserted their homes and businesses to flocked to the beach to assist in the heartbreaking drive.
They raced to carry the wounded to hospitals using all possible means, including vans, cars, two-wheeler vehicles and cycles.
The Jamaat people were able, all on their own, to provide milk for a few hundred babies, and food for over 3,000 survivors while about 3,000 Muslims were serving over 10,000 Hindus and Christians in makeshift camps in local schools.
Hundreds of homeless Hindus and Christians were welcomed to stay at the mosque and more others were housed at Jamaat’s school and office building.
The Muslim group turned huge community kitchens, which were used for frequent community feasts, into relief kitchens and hired at least 24 cooks working round the clock to feed for some 9,000 survivors.
According to the report, there were no Muslim causalities in Cuddalore because they prefer trading and not fishing like most Hindus and Christians.
Lauded
The hand of assistance extended by the Muslims was held in high esteem by the local officials.
‘‘They have been doing wonderful work, I was with them the whole last night,’’ said District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi.
He plans to raise the highly-appreciated efforts with the federal government once relief and rescue work is over.
In other devastated villages Muslims and the local administration joined hands in catering for the survivors.
While the officials provided only rice and milk, the Jamaat footed the bills for vegetables and everything else.
‘‘It’s all God’s will. Inshallah [God willing], they will all begin life well in a few weeks,’’ said Younus who defied sleep for days to help fellow Indians.
‘‘We will continue to raise money to feed them for as long as they need. They are welcome to be with us as long as they want.”

Not to mention all the lobby work Pakistan's doing around to get other nations to help out. Our nation has done and is doing more than our due share. In situations like these there's a nothing is enough policy, I don't care if the other Muslim nations don't want to help out to their potential, but thats why they call it a humanitarian crises. Religion has nothing to do with helping out people.

My thread was a rant to get you guys going to push forward for more aid from all sides and corners of the much capable world, not start a stupid flame war on whose got the bigger weener and whose squirting it further.

I doubt that it was uae either. probably it was someone from europe.
But the most hypocrate part of it is that all europe and america is intrested in western casualties. If it had not been for them, the west would not have responded so heavily. At first, as they didnt knew much about their own victims, they were pretty slow.
Its an international catastrophe.
The main thing is that we learn some lesson from this and build up an emergency response force of our own.

I am afraid as usual you have your facts wrong
Washington, Jan. 5 (PTI): Sri Lanka has thanked both India and the United States for providing assistance to the island nation, which was one of the worst hit by the tsunami disaster.
India, "a neighbour and anchor partner", was the first to provide aid on December 26 followed by America, Sri Lankan Ambassador to the US Devinda Subasinghe, said.
The Indian Government had sent six ships and helicopters to participate in the relief effort, he said, adding India yesterday stationed a hospital ship off Lanka's east coast. It has also dispatched civil engineering teams that specialize in logistics during the crises.
The Ambassador said US Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Senate majority Leader Bill Frist, a physician, are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka this week.
Subasinghe said the Sri Lankan community in America has also offered assistance. Physicians have offered to go to the affected areas, and temples, mosques, churches and ordinary citizens have volunteered to collect relief supplies.
American companies have donated water purification tablets and other supplies and have paid for transportation. "The contribution from the corporate world has just been tremendous," he added.

My dear human
All I want to say is that it took the great " new wrld Empire" hours to mobilse hundreds of transport planes, fighter A/C, tankers, ships & thosands of troops to invade Afghanistan & Iraq but even aftert over 7 seven days after the tsunami, we don't see any humanitarian task force from the world leadre. Does it say something? You tell me.
