BEIJING, June 9 (APP): China hails Pakistan's consistent position on the question of Taiwan, stating the two countries have always been supporting each other on the matters relating to their national integrity and sovereignty.
"China attaches great importance to Pakistan and other regional countries for their support on Taiwan issue," this was stated by a spokesman of Taiwan Affairs office of the State Council, while briefing the visiting journalists from the South Asian countries.
He noted that over 160 countries of the world recognize and support China's position on the question of Taiwan. "We highly value the backing of the South Asian countries on the issue of their national interest," he added.
While reaffirming China's policy about peaceful settlement of the issue, he said the mainland is prepared to give maximum autonomy to Taiwan.
Taiwan as an integral part of China, can maintain its existing political and economic set-up like Hong Kong, he added.
Replying to a question, the spokesman said Beijing was prepared to go a long way toward meeting Taiwanese concerns about reunification, if only the island's leaders definitively dropped any talks of independence.
Several issues were successful handled at the time of China's takeover of Hong Kong and Macao. China, for example, does not permit its citizens to hold dual citizenship, which many in Macao held before the transfer of power from Portugal. Beijing decreed that the Macao residents would hold only Chinese passports, but could keep any "international travel documents" they had held previously.
The "One China-Two Systems" formula used for hyper-capitalist Hong Kong could be adapted for Taiwan, the spokesman contended. "The Chinese government may consider giving the autonomy more than that accepted in case of Hong Kong.
A Pakistani official told APP in an interview that they appreciate the efforts made by China for reunification of Taiwan to the motherland and considers the recently passed Anti-Secession Law as part of these efforts.
Reiterated the principle stand of the Pakistani government adhering to one China policy, he said, "We are among the countries who earliest issued statement supporting the law."

BEIJING, June 19 (APP): Pakistan had made tremendous efforts to curb the menace of terrorism and extremism and President Pervez Musharraf's policies in this regard proved very effective, said spokesman of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Qin Gang China and Pakistan have been working together to ensure peace in the region, he said adding, " The two countries conducted joint anti-terror drills and have also concluded an accord for elimination of terrorism, separatism and extremism."
In an interview with an English Daily, he said after 9/11, Pakistan has done a lot in fight against terrorism and thus we are now benefiting from each other's skills and abilities to root-out the three evils through joint and co-ordinated efforts.
To a question, the spokesman said China is glad to see the ongoing peace process between Pakistan and India and the efforts of the leaderships of both the countries to resolve disputes through dialogue. Beijing had always desired a lasting peace in South Asia and kept playing its due role for the same, he added.
About the Sino-Pak friendship, Qin Gang stated that China takes immense pride in it's exemplary ties with Pakistan "Our top leaderships are in regular contact to maintain the depth of their traditional historical bonds,” he said adding, " People from both the countries were the real strength behind this friendship."
Both countries are actively engaged exploring new avenues
of
bilateral cooperation, particularly to boost up their trade and
business relations.
The Spokesman said their government-to-government level
ties have
always been encouraging but the new emerging economy of Pakistan
has really come up as a great incentive, enhancing cooperation
among the private sector. " We are motivating the private sector
take full advantage of the investment-friendly environment in
Pakistan," he added.
To a question about China's stance on expansion of the
permanent
membership of the Security Council, the Spokesman said that China
was in favour of overall reforms of the United Nations. "The
reforms should not be merely Security Council specific. If there
have to be some reforms, those have to be broad based and across
the board so that the developing countries could also get maximum
representation.
The interview was conducted by Makhdoom Babar,
Editor-in-Chief of
The Daily Mail. He told APP that the Chinese Foreign Ministry
assured him its maximum cooperation to strengthen their contacts
at the media level. This, he said is imperative to present
political and socio-economic developments in the region to the
world in their true perspective.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will get status of observer of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and it will be officially ratified during the two-day conference scheduled on July 5-6 in the Kazakh capital of Astana.
The status of observer was approved by the foreign ministers of the member states in a meeting in Kazakhstan on June-4.
At present, China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan are members of the organization, which was founded in 2001, while Pakistan, Iran and India have applied for statues of observer.
Tehran's Initiative
Tehran has already initiated negotiations with Beijing and two countries have decided to revive the Silk Road through SCO to act as a bridge connecting the East and the West.
The decision will have a very positive impact on Pakistan and Islamabad will like to take active part in the process following the formal ratification next month, officials said.
Following the completion of the project through SCO, all the regional countries will be able to move along this route, they added.
Placing special focus on strengthening bilateral ties, officials said that priority should be given to seven measures including increased trade exchange, expansion of cooperation between the private sectors, establishment of special support tariffs, exchange of updated information, formation of a private banks, founding transportation companies and establishment of a state credit system aiming to support small and medium industries.
Tourism Expo 2005
Meanwhile, a 17-member delegation, representing tourism industry in Pakistan arrived here Monday to attend the three-day Beijing International Tourism Expo 2005.
"A special Pakistan's pavilion is being set up at the exhibition, beginning Wednesday. Hashim Khan, Managing Director Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation who leads the delegation told APP that it will be a big show to demonstrate the country's rich tourism potential.
"We are confident that it will be a major step forward strengthening their bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector. We also enjoy extra advantage since the Chinese government has granted Pakistan Authorized Destination Status (ADS)".
Accordingly, the two sides have exchanged lists of approved tour operators and traveling agencies to arrange tour groups.
Pakistan could be the most attractive place, if the departments concerned offer special group-tour packages for the Chinese citizens. There is need to promote awareness about the country's prominent tourism features as well, the sources added.
The travel agencies and tour operators of the two countries are also required to coordinate in preparing tour packages facilitating their tourists, said a senior official of the Travel Service Group of China (CTS).
It is also imperative for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to reduce its existing fare on Pakistan-China route for achieving the desired results.
Most of the Chinese tourists avoid travel to Pakistan only because of the existing higher airfare. The national carrier has to reduce the fare drastically in order to attract more and more passengers, said a local businessman.
The Chinese government laid special emphasis consolidating relations with the regional countries through tourism. Recently, there has been rapid growth of Chinese tourists, as record 14.3 million Chinese went abroad last year, spending over 20 billion dollars.●

KARACHI, June 23: The Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan plans to hold a ‘Biryani Festival’ in China next month to introduce basmati rice in Chinese society which mostly consumes coarse rice and is not accustomed to aroma rice such as basmati.
Talking to a group of journalists at a luncheon meeting organized by the association for the visiting Chinese official team, REAP vice-chairman Mohammad Anwar Mianoor said that a rice delegation would visit China next month and hold the Biryani Festival to introduce basmati rice there.
He said members of the Chinese delegation after visiting several rice mills and the Quality Regulatory Council (QRC) expressed their satisfaction over the quality of Pakistani rice.
Mr Mianoor pointed out that the team would be submitting its final report on getting back home and expressed the hope that rice exports from Pakistan to China would commence from September this year. He said the objective of the visit of Chinese team was to verify pest control situation in Pakistan and according to an initial finding, the team was satisfied with the performance.
Responding to a question, he said: “Our exporters would not only export coarse rice but also try to promote basmati rice in China.”
The four-member delegation comprises officials from ministries of commerce and agriculture and pests control department of China. The team also visited Karachi and Qasim ports and met Sindh chief secretary.
On an average, Mr Mianoor said, China during the last two to three years had been importing 0.5 million tons of rice, mainly from Thailand and Vietnam, and expressed the hope that Pakistani exporters would manage to get their due share in the Chinese market.
Earlier, a six-member REAP delegation headed by its vice-chairman called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad at the Governor’s House and appreciated his services to the province in general and to the business community in particular.
In recognition of his services, the association has decided to present a ‘gold medal’ to Dr Ishratul Ibad. The governor has accepted the request for which a ceremony will be held in the last week of next month.
Mr Mianoor apprised the governor that owing to lack of knowledge and non-availability of quality seeds the rice crop in the province was suffering badly and the crop size was declining. He suggested that to improve the production, the Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku and Dokri should be employed for the development of new varieties of seed.
The Sindh governor assured the delegation that seed development and distribution would be handed over to the private sector and Rs100 million had been already allocated in the new budget. He expressed the hope that after this step new seed varieties and availability of seed in the province would improve.
The delegation also requested the governor to allocate a piece of land of about 500 acres for the rice export zone at the corridor of Northern Bypass in Karachi. It said this would help expand rice trade as it would house new rice processing units and warehousing.
Dr Ibad accepted the proposal with a condition that allottees would install industries within a period of one year and it would not be transferable and even saleable on power of attorney.

BEIJING, June 30 (APP): Pakistan and China will hold talks on senior officials' level in Islamabad within next two days to discuss wide-ranging issues of common interest, including the UN reforms.
A spokesman of the Chinese Foreign office Liu Jianchao told reporters here Thursday at the weekly news briefing that the two countries will hold "Strategic consultation" to deepen their bilateral cooperation in political and economic fields.
Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu Dawei will represent his side at the talks. China wishes to elicit views of the regional countries including Pakistan on the UN reforms.
His country, he said was looking forward for a broader possible consensus on the reforms, including the proposed expansion the Security Council.
Pakistan and China have taken almost an identical position on the UN's reforms, making the world body more democratic and representatives.
Liu said China has always supported the UN to enhance its capability in coping with various global threats and challenges through necessary and rational reforms.
According to the sources, China believes that decisions on the reform of the United Nations Security Council should be made following full discussions in line with the democratic principle in international relations and should not set a time limit or get off in a hasty manner.
China supports the reform and expansion of the Security Council as well as the participation of developing countries in policy-making in the Security Council.
However, China is strongly opposed to any forced voting on reform programmes that are still controversial.

Pakistan, China to establish space agency
Argentine, Brazil, Ukraine also keen on joining Apsco
BEIJING: Pakistan, China and some other regional countries have agreed to formally launch Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (Apsco) for developing space technology.
The Apsco is being set up to promote capabilities of the member countries in several areas of space technology applications, said Muhammad Nasim Shah, senior adviser of the Asia-Pacific Multilateral Cooperation in Space Technology and Applications (AP-MCSTA).
He told APP here in an interview that the four Asia-Pacific countries, China, Pakistan, Peru and Thailand have already conveyed the approval of their respective parliaments and governments to sign the Apsco convention.
As per Article 29 of the convention, the Apsco convention will enter into force when at least five states of the Asia-Pacific Region, which are members of the United Nations, have signed it and have deposited with the host government their instruments of ratification or acceptance.
Expressing the hope that the Apsco will be established shortly, he said the government of Argentine has approved the convention and requested for granting observer’s status with Apsco, since it is located outside the geographic region of Apsco.
Brazil and Ukraine have informed that they were also interested in joining the Apsco as associate members/observers. Other governments of Asia-Pacific countries are reportedly reviewing the Convention and the procedure of approval as their signatures are in progress in their parliaments, he added.
China has offered to provide full financial support in connection with the establishment and operation of the Apsco until 2006. As such, the member states are not under any obligation to make financial contributions during the preparatory phase.
The member states will be required to pay their financial contributions from the year 2007.
Nasim Shah, former secretary Suparco who played a pioneering role in formulating charter and convention of the proposed Asia-Pacific Space Agency, said efforts are being intensified to formally launch the organization at an early date in order to expand cooperation in space activities in the region.

BEIJING, July 5 (APP): China congratulated Pakistan on joining Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) that opened its summit meeting in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan Tuesday.
We warmly congratulate Pakistan and hope its role in the SCO will help promote closer cooperation among the regional countries in various fields, including addressing their common security concerns, said a spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Liu Jianchao at a weekly news briefing.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz's presence at the summit has formally brought Pakistan into the SCO's fold. China supported Pakistan, India and Iran, granting them Observer status in the organization, the spokesman added.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources here said, It is a good omen that both rival countries- Pakistan and India have joined the important regional security grouping, which is engaged in promoting peace and development, as their common goal.
This will also facilitate their on-going efforts normalizing their relations and settling their bilateral disputes peacefully.
The 'observer status' will pave the way for the two countries to get the SCO's full membership at an appropriate time, the sources added.

The Chinese government on Sunday offered an emergency aid worth US$6.2 million to help earthquake victims in Pakistan.
The first batch of disaster relief materials is expected to arrive in Islamabad at 5:00pm local time, according to the Chinese Commerce Ministry.
Customs officers check and give clearance to the first batch of relief materials to be sent to earthquake-stricken Pakistan at Beijing Capital International Airport October 9, 2005. The emergency aid materials, weighing 15.3 tons and valued at 5.44 million renminbi yuan, are airlifted to Pakistan by an Air China cargo plane.
China also sent a 49-member international rescue team Sunday morning to Pakistan. The team, headed by China Seismological Bureau deputy director Zhao Heping, was composed of 49 rescuers, medical staffs and seismological experts.
This was the fourth international rescue team that China had sent abroad since 2003, Xinhua news agency said.
On Saturday, Chinese President Hu Jintao sent a message of condolences to his Pakistani counterpart Pervez Musharraf over the massive earthquake.
Hu, on behalf of the Chinese government and people and in his own name, offered his condolences, through Musharraf, to the victims' families and the injured, and expressed deep grief over those who were killed in the disaster.
Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing also extended condolences to their Pakistani counterparts Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri over the deadly earthquake.

At the site for the CISAR's locomotive hospital, quite a number of local residents came early in the morning, helping the team build the medical tents. Among them were some people still with slight injuries in arms or legs by the Oct. 8 earthquake.
Medical staff of international rescue teams or local hospitals visited the Chinese locomotive hospital, saying the team brought with them the most advanced equipment and facilities.
The women medical staff with the team right met with the urgent need, as the Pakistani women never went to see a man doctor due to local customs, said a local medical staff.
Lieutenant colonel Saeed, the chief officer of the disaster-relief headquarters in Balakot, was invited to take a laboratory test with ultrasonic and ECG devices."Such devices are the first of its type since the disaster hit the region," Saeed said.
GEO TV station, one of the major mainstream TV stations in Pakistan, also covered the news about the CISAR and its locomotive hospital.
In an interview with GEO, Zhao Heping said the Chinese government dispatched the second team of CISAR shortly after the return of the first team, at the request of the World Health Organization and in accordance with the Pakistani real situation.
The government also provided the team with the best equipment and facilities.
"The Chinese government attached much concern over the disaster-hit Pakistani people, and will always give them help as much as possible," Zhao said.
Huang Jianfa, deputy director of the team, told Xinhua that the team has received heart-felt welcome and support from local military troops and people.
Apart from full-page stories by local media, the association of animal protection in Pakistan also made an offer of donkeys and mules for the team so that the medical staff could go deeper into the mountainous areas and help residents therein.
The military troops in Balakot said they will give wide-ranging publicity of the Chinese hospital to the local residents, and offer military vehicles for the team.
By press time, the CISAR's locomotive hospital had received 54 patients, and a small team of three doctors also had given medical treatment to 14 patients in villages nearby.

Zhang made the remarks at a signing ceremony with Ejaz Rahim, Pakistan's cabinet secretary, to hand over a new batch of 150,000 blankets and 3,380 tents worth 50 million yuan (about 6.2 million US dollars), as part of China's new pledge of further relief aid.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Oct. 27 promised that China would provide Pakistan with further relief aid worth 13.8 US million dollars after a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shaukat Aziz in Moscow, according to Zhang.
The ambassador said China had donated 500,000 US dollars to Pakistan at the United Nations donors conference in Geneva.
The above-mentioned amount plus the 6.2-million-dollar aid which China had donated in the first week after the devastating earthquake, has made China's relief aid to Pakistan a total of 20.5 million dollars up to now, Zhang said, adding that the total excludes the aid provided by the Chinese military and the red cross society.
Upon the request of the Pakistani side, Zhang said, China will provide further relief assistance. Besides the blankets and tents badly needed in the earthquake-affected areas, China has sent a second dispatch of rescue workers, mainly surgeons and nurses to set up field hospitals in those areas.
The ambassador announced that a Chinese governmental delegation will visit Pakistan from Nov. 1 to 4 to hold talks with the Pakistani side on reconstruction and rehabilitation following the earthquake.
"Because the governments and the peoples of China and Pakistan have been enjoying a fraternal friendship tried through difficulties, the Chinese side made prompt decision to provide relief aid at the earliest time immediately after the Oct. 8 earthquake," said Zhang. "This shows the deep feelings and emotions of the Chinese for the Pakistanis."
On behalf of the Pakistani government and people, Ejaz Rahim extended gratitude to the Chinese government and people for the humanitarian assistance and the gesture of goodwill to Pakistan since the earthquake.
"We cannot forget that China is amongst the first countries to leap to the assistance of the people of Pakistan and it has done it every time when Pakistan is in need," said Rahim. "We cannot forget the tremendous work the Chinese rescue team has done in Balakot, the most affected area, in those very difficult conditions and we cannot forget China's contribution to the Pakistani President Relief Fund."
He expressed belief that the second team of the Chinese rescue workers would help those in need, especially women and children, and respond to their medical, social and psychological needs.

"As the 80th K-8E aircraft is being delivered to the Egyptian Air Forces, today we are celebrating a milestone in joint Sino-Egyptian cooperation in aircraft-manufacturing," said Ibrahim Yunis, chairman of the AOI/ACL aircraft-manufacturing company.
AOI/ACL began to assembly Chinese-designed K-8E aircraft in July 2000 and now it has been authorized to produce as much as 97. 4 percent of the components of the aircraft.
Wu Shengyue, vice-Chairman of the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), expressed optimism over the future cooperation between the two sides.
"Today we are not only witnessing the successful completion of the first Sino-Egyptian contract on joint aircraft-manufacturing, we are also celebrating the beginning of the second contract under which another 40 K-8E aircraft will be manufactured in Egypt before February 2010," Wu said.
He added that CATIC and AOI/ACL will work harder in the future to export K-8E aircraft to other Arab countries and the African market.
K-8E is an Egyptian version of the K-8 series, which is jointly developed by Chinese and Pakistani engineers.
K-8, which stands for Karakoram-8, is a two-seat advanced training jet and light air-to-ground attack aircraft.
Egyptian Air Forces has been the largest receiver of the K-8 trainers since CATIC signed a contract of 347.4 million US dollars in 1999 with the Egyptian Defense Department to export 80 K-8E aircraft.
http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/2238/2005-12-11/38@286971.htm
Zeng Wen, vice president of the export department of the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), revealed the ambitious plan at the final day of the 2005 Forum for K-8 International Customers, which kicked off in Cairo on Sunday.
"CATIC has sold 249 K-8 trainers since 1994 to our clients across southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa," said Zeng.
"We aim to sell 250 more in the next 10 years so that by the year 2015 the total number of K-8 exported will probably reach around 500," Zeng added.
The 38-year-old aviation engineer believed "sustained quality services" will help CATIC sell more K-8 trainers in the highly competitive international market.
"We're a relative new player in the market, but things are getting better as we offer first-class products with sustained quality services," Zeng explained.
K-8, which stands for Karakoram-8, is a two-seat advanced training jet and light ground attack aircraft developed by Chinese and Pakistani engineers.
The aircraft is designed to provide basic flying training with capacity for light air-to-ground close support.
Egyptian Air Forces has been the largest receiver of the K-8 trainers since CATIC signed a contract of 347.4 million US dollars in 1999 with the Egyptian Defense Department to export 80 K-8E aircraft, an Egyptian version of the K-8 series.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (APP): Pakistan, China decided to commemorate 55th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations this year, aimed at reinforcing their efforts to strengthen their multifaceted relationship.
During the year, the two sides are likely to witness high-level visits, bilateral exchanges and greater interaction in the areas like trade, education, culture, tourism and Defence.
"We are looking forward concentrating on people-to-people contacts to transform their strategic alliance into a vibrant socio-economic partnership," officials said here.
The new year will have special significance, since some important Chinese-assisted projects including Gwadar seaport, up-gradation of Karakorum highway and some Hydro power projects will be put into operation.
The two sides also agreed to conclude this year their negotiation on Free Trade Agreement (FTA), slashing duties to zero percent on around 3000 items by end of next year.
Chinese companies are also likely to enhance their participation in Pakistan's economic development. They have shown willingness take part in Jamshore Thermal power project, expansion of Pakistan Steel and exploration of oil and gas fields.
The tele-communication is another area of common interest. According to the official sources, the two sides will explore new avenues of bilateral cooperation in the new year.
The bilateral ties received greater impetus, when Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Pervez Musharraf signed a joint declaration in Beijing in December, 2003, pledging to take their strategic partnership to a new height in the 21st century. Premier Wen Jiabao and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz made another headway in bilateral ties, by signing a treaty of friendship April this year, besides a number of other important agreements, including the ‘Early Harvest Programme that was aimed at boosting their trade ties by launching a free trade regime from January 2006. At the diplomatic front, the two countries maintained close cooperation in the multilateral fora.
They supported each other internationally in pursuit of the common objectives of peace and development at regional level. They took a unanimous position on important issues, like the war against terrorism, UN's reforms as well as peace efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Middle East. Similarly, China consistently supported Pakistan's initiatives to peacefully resolve its disputes with India.

BEIJING, Jan 5 (APP):China will continue to attach top priority to Pakistan as its trust-worthy friend in the region, while developing relationship with its other neighbours.
The amount of trust, confidence and understanding, the two countries enjoy is unprecedented, says Chinese scholars while analyzing country’s foreign policy with the countries in South Asian region.
China believes in friendship with all and enmity with none and wishes to bring normalcy in its relations even with countries like India, with whom after having war in 1962 it still involves in serious border dispute.
Chinese leadership holds in high esteem five principles of ‘peaceful co-existence’ and assured their neighbours to engage itself in equal partnership. The same time, while pursuing an independent foreign policy, China sees no change in its priority areas, traditional alliance with Pakistan for promoting durable partnership in all aras of common interest.
China and India are to celebrate 2006, a year of friendship. But, some analysts, according to a report published in China Daily, have voiced doubts about whether a durable partnership between the two neighbours who have a history of suspicion and hostility can work.
To reinforce the efforts of building strategic partnership, Pakistan and China have also decided to commemorate 2006 as 55th anniversary of establishment of their diplomatic ties.
Pakistan is only country in the world for which Chinese leaders and the people use the phrase’ All weather friend’, showing the depth of their understanding and goodwill in their relationship,? said here a Chinese scholar Yu Dunxin while talking to APP.
Another scholar of China’s institute of strategic studies in Beijing said nothing could affect the decades’ old Sino-Pakistan friendship despite the changes in global and regional situation.
It would be utmost endeavour to further strengthen the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation, which was in the fundamental interest of the people of two countries as well as the peoples of the region and the world as a whole.
According to the sources, the bilateral ties had received greater impetus, with a signing of joint declaration in December, 2003 by the Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Pervez Musharraf that set a direction, bringing their strategic partnership to a new height in the 21st century.
Later in April 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz signed important agreements, including the ‘Early Harvest Programme’, pushing forward their all-round partnership.
During the new year, the two sides are likely to have high-level visits, bilateral exchanges and greater interactions in the areas like trade, education, culture, tourism and Defence.

BEIJING: Pakistan’s exports to China showed an upward trend, registering an increase of about 39.2 per cent last year, the Chinese Custom Authority said.
The exports totalled $832 million during January to December 2005 compared to exports of $594 million in the previous year (January-December 2004). Therefore, the increase in Pakistan’s exports to China in one year amounted to about $238 million.
Custom Authority sources told APP here on Saturday there was a considerable jump in the exports of cotton yarn, cotton fabric, leather, chromium ore, copper and fish.
China calculates export figures on the basis of origin of exported items, including those that come to the mainland through Hong Kong. The Chinese financial calendar runs from January to December.
When asked to comment on future prospects of Pakistan’s trade with China, Commercial Counsellor in Pakistan Embassy, Shahid Mahmood said there was still great room for enhancing exports, particularly of value-added textile products like cotton fabric, manmade fabric, home textile and towel.
The growing Chinese market also provides wide opportunities for Pakistani traders to enhance the export of non-traditional items like sports and engineering goods, handicrafts, marble, onyx, jewellery and agro-based products.
Pakistan’s exports to China are likely to get a further boost, with the reduction of tariff on a number of products under the Early Harvest Programme (EHP) that came into effect from January 1, 2006. The margin of duty reduction by China is around 27 per cent.
Shahid Mahmood hoped the trade volume would increase in the coming months when rice, mango and other agro-based products would be included in the list of exports to China.
There are bright prospects to take Pakistan’s annual export volume to US$ 1 billion by the end of this year.
An official of the Chinese Commerce Ministry suggested maximum number of Pakistani businessmen should visit Beijing to explore new openings in trade.
According to economic experts, there are very favourable indications for the two countries to enhance their overall trade as tariff on most of the items would come to zero by the end of 2008.

Free trade agreement with China finalised:
LAHORE: Federal Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan on Saturday said that Pakistan had finalised free trade agreement with China while negotiations with the US in this connection were underway.
He was talking to the newsmen after participating in a conference on "Domestic Commerce - The Missing Link", organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Ministry of Commerce here.
He said that Pakistan had initiated trade negotiations with the US during a visit of President Musharraf in 2004 to finalise Pak-US bilateral investment agreement.
"There has been progress during recent visit of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to the United States," he said, adding the agreement would be finalised after the conclusion of talks.
Talking about GSP Plus status to Pakistan by the European Union, the commerce minister said that Pakistan had succeeded in getting GSP status in January 2006 and the country’s textile products were exempted from 20 per cent duties in the European market. However, he added, "we are targeting to get the status of GSP Plus".
To a question, he said that Pakistan had not rejected or delayed implementation of South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA). Its gradual implementation would start from July 2006, he added.
He explained that the developing nations of SAARC had demanded assistance on technical issues regarding SAFTA, which would be addressed soon. He said SAFTA was not delayed and was being implemented as per the agreement.
He said the most favoured nation (MFN) status to India was not part of SAFTA as it would be dealt at bilateral level.
Referring to domestic commerce, Humayun Akhtar said that a trade survey report was being prepared to assess the obstacles in the way of trading. He added that the report would be issued with the trade policy in next fiscal year.
He said Chinese cheap products were essentially not a problem for local industry. He added that trade malpractices such as under-invoicing and dumping of goods could create problem. However, the government would handle such issues with a proper strategy, he maintained.
He said multinational investment would give an impetus to working of local companies as competition always led to economic development.
He did not agree with the impression that multinational investment in wholesale and retail sectors would harm the interest of farmers, small traders and consumers.
Among others, Shahid Hussain, Nadimul Haq and Marek Minkiewicz also spoke on the occasion.

The Gwadar oil refinery, which is being planned and designed, is expected to reach a daily oil output of 60,000 barrels when it goes into production, said Umer Ahmed Ghuman, Pakistan's Minister of State for Privatization and Investment.
Ghuman accompanied President Pervez Musharraf in a visit to China in late February. During the visit, leaders of the two countries discussed the feasibility of the US$12 billion investments and China displayed an avid interest in the infrastructures construction in Pakistan, Ghuman said.
With these investments, Pakistan is also going to build Islamabad International Airport and two hydraulic power plants at Bunji and Nilam-Jhelum, Ghuman told local press recently.
China is also planning to foster its participation in Pakistan's long-term economic development by investing US$500 million in a joint venture investment company, according to the report.
Pakistan has attracted US$1.6 billion in foreign investments during the first 7 months of this fiscal year, starting last July. It is expected to attract furthermore US$1.4 billion in the rest of the fiscal year.

BEIJING, May 20 (APP): Chinese President Hu Jintao Saturday reassured that his country would continue to work with Pakistan strengthening their strategic partnership for a better future of their people.
In a message to President Pervez Musharraf on the occasion of 55th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations, he said China is willing to work together with Pakistan, enrich the connotation of mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly build up a better future for the Sino-Pak strategic partnership in the new century.
Pakistan was one of the first groups of countries that recognized China. On May 21, 1951, the two countries officially established their diplomatic relations. Since then, they witnessed smooth development of friendly and neighbourly relations as well as mutually beneficial cooperation as traditional allies.
Diplomatic sources told APP that the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and the Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing also sent similar messages of goodwill to their Pakistani counterparts on the occasion, pledging to maintain the momentum of their mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.
President Hu Jintao in his message further said over the years since establishment of their diplomatic ties, the two countries carried forward their "all-weather" cooperative partnership on the basis of Five- rinciples of peaceful co-existence, which have brought tangible benefits to the people of the two
countries and made positive contribution to the peace, stability and development in the region and the world as well.
"The Sino-Pak relations may be rated as a model of state-to-state relationship among the developing and neighbouring countries", he added.
Premier Wen Jiabao, extending warm congratulation to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz noted that the Sino-Pak relations have withstood the tests of internationally changing situation and become a model of living in amity among countries with different social systems.
He noted that the "Treaty of Friendship" signed by the two countries last year raised the Sino-Pak friendly relationship of cooperation to a new level. China, he added ready to work with Pakistan pushing forward their "all-round" strategic partnership.
The Chinese Foreign Minister in a separate message to Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri said that the relations of the two countries developed steadily with common efforts, made by the two governments and the people.
The two countries have maintained the momentum of exchanging high-level visits and made remarkable achievements in mutually beneficial cooperation in fields of common interest, including defence and economy.
A spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Liu Jianchao said that they are looking forward to strengthen their all-dimensional strategic partnership with Pakistan in the years to come.
During the current year, the two sides are likely to witness high-level visits, bilateral exchanges and greater interactions in the areas like trade, energy, education, culture, tourism and Defence.
The year 2006 assumed special significance, since some important Chinese-assisted projects including Gwadar deep seaport, up-gradation of Karakarum highway and Jinnah Hydro power projects are likely to be put into operation.
The two sides also agreed to conclude the on-going negotiation on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of this year.
The China-Pakistan friendship rooted in the popular ethos and common interests of the people of the two countries, based on complete trust and mutual understanding, said Pakistan ambassador to China Sulman Bashir.
In an interview, he said the leadership, governments and peoples of the two countries are determined to impart ever greater vigour and vitality to their bilateral relations and work together, facing new challenges in the 21st century.

Try attending a Jinaza like this and then you will know what it means to be in a war ! What it means to pray over your fallen friends who had fought alongside you in battles. The families of our sons and brothers in armed forces are doing this everyday -- leaving behind thousands of orphans, widows and old grieving parents. This is a war our haramkhor politicians do not want to acknowledge. Elections in these times of war would mean more deaths, destruction and chaos. Then there will be no time for tauba, just punishments. Wake up now before it is too late.
