Please write to the Janes Defence (so called?) expert. Here is my response (to Joshua_kucera@yahoo.com). I also wrote to Janes Defence. My reply to Joshua Kucera and to slate.com: The following is a reply to the article published: (To Pakistan, With Thanks The weapons we're sending to Islamabad are targeted against India, not the Taliban. By Joshua Kucera Posted Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at 4:52 AM PT) Fight against terror Having read your article, I came away with a sense that it is wrong for a nation to defend itself. The support for Pakistan’s current policies should be enhanced due to their PARTNERSHIP with the USA’s global fight against terror. Indeed such equipment you mentioned is needed for this purpose, as Pakistan’s conventional military capability has been much eroded as a result of the previous FAILED policies of the past. Your assertions about lack of use of this equipment in the war on terror hold little ground. It is well known that many Al-Qaeeda figures are heading towards Iraq. The use of maritime patrol aircraft ensures that this region can be monitored and any signs of movement relayed to the Americans. Further private arms supplies to the Middle East region must be curtailed. That’s where this equipment is undeniably useful. The use of F16s is another example, where you have misconstrued the efforts of Pakistanis to fight terror. It is a well known fact that as a result of sanctions imposed by the USA, the number of aircraft available in Pakistan’s inventory is low. The remaining aircraft also have to be assigned to regularly patrol their skies (it is their right to defend themselves). This reduces the scope for offensive capabilities against Al-Qaeeda in the FATA tribal belt. Hence, further F16s are essential in this fight. Besides it is a symbol of power and resolve to the Al-Qaeeda and the locals. This should also help in reducing recruitment to the extremist groups. Defending against India Pakistan’s military capability being 1/5th of its larger neighbour, India, ensures that it can never threaten India, but it does have a right to defend itself from any attack. Besides reducing its conventional capability, would undeniably lower the nuclear threshold, especially at a time of war. This in turn reduces the scope for any last minute diplomatic moves. Your article seems at best misinformed, and at worst mischievous. Calculated to draw attention away from the USA trying to create some parity in the region, which would ensure peaceful co-existence between Pakistan and India. After all, offensive capability is the best line of defence. As a James defence expert, you of all, should have been appreciative of this fact! Further, you also failed to acknowledge that India has been on a buying spree of military hardwares all around the world, which includes capability for beyond visual range engagements. This has exacerbated, the already military balance between the 2 South Asian countries, in favour of India overwhelmingly. This misconstrued numerical figure MUST be readdressed. America stands for peace in the region, which can only be restored by assisting Pakistan to fight terror and build up its capability to prevent miscalculations by its neighbour. It should then assist to facilitate the process of peace between the two. This alone would bring peace. Not one sided policies (I point to the past as evidence of failure). Your insinuated remarks about Pakistan, indicate a lack of knowledge of its people and its defence needs. Do you actually write for Janes Defence Weekly? I wonder! Do all the advocating you want but the bottom line is that we need to tactfully handle Israel. This man who has written this article is undoubtedly one who feels a pre-emptive threat from Pakistan. I for one would like to see Musharraf distance himself from the fundamentalists in our country.
