British fighter jets escort PIA's passenger flight in UK airspace

The flight PK-709 with 297 passengers from Lahore was due to land at Manchester Airport.


LONDON (Reuters) - Britain launched fighter jets on Friday to escort a Pakistan International Airlines plane carrying 297 passengers from Lahore after it was diverted from Manchester, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said.

Flight PK709 from the city of Lahore in Pakistan was due to land at Manchester Airport in north west England at 1230 GMT. The plane was diverted to Stansted airport, east of central London, according to a Manchester Airport spokesman.

Essex Police, who are responsible for the area where Stansted is located, said an incident had occurred on a flight and they were investigating.

The news comes two days after a soldier was hacked to death on a London street in an incident the government are treating as a terrorist incident.

UK Police arrest two men over incident in PIA’s passenger flight

A British fighter jet was launched to divert the PIA’s plane from Manchester to Stansted airport.


LONDON (AP) - British police say two men have been arrested on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft after an incident on a civilian plane flying from Pakistan to England.

A jet was launched to divert the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane carrying nearly 300 passengers to Britain s Stansted Airport on Friday. It was originally supposed to have landed in Manchester.

Essex Police said that two men have been arrested and removed from the plane, which is on an isolated runway at the airport.
