PESHAWAR (AFP) - Heavy fighting between Pakistani troops and militants has killed 13 soldiers and scores of enemy fighters at a flashpoint near the Afghan border, military officials said Tuesday.

The clashes signalled a fresh military push in the Tirah valley of Khyber district, where the military has been targeting Taliban and militia Lashkar-e-Islam who threaten the nearby northwestern city of Peshawar.

Khyber straddles the NATO supply line into Afghanistan, used by US-led troops to evacuate military equipment ahead of their 2014 withdrawal, and officials say it is key to protecting security in Peshawar for elections next month.

"Thirteen soldiers have died over the past three days in different parts of Tirah valley. Ground forces have intensified operations against TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban) and Lashkar-e-Islam," a military official told AFP.

The official said more than 100 militants had also been killed, but the death toll was not possible to verify independently as the area is cut off to journalists and aid workers.

He said the town of Tut Sar had been "captured" back from militants and that soldiers had now erected a post in the area.

"Helicopters and jets participated in the operation. They are shelling militant hideouts in the valley," the official said.

A second military official confirmed the same details.

Pakistani troops have been fighting for years against homegrown insurgents in the northwestern tribal belt, where the United States has accused them of not doing enough to crack down on Taliban and other militants active in Afghanistan.

about 17 Commandos, 10-15 Infantry shaheed (Including 2 officers), atleast 18 commandos, unknown figures for infantry injured.....

I've never understood the point of covering the deaths up. Do they think death counts will deter people from supporting this war? We can either have our soldiers die fighting or we can have these guys ruling us. Frankly i'd prefer Zardari to the TTP.

Higher figures if published will give enemy bragging rights and boost their morale whilst lowering ours.

I am guessing the causalities were high because initial push into hardened militant area was always going to be difficult. Now if inroad have been made daily causality figure would come down.

Why no advantage was taken when militants were fighting in between few months ago in Tirah valley?

Isn't the so called "ameer" of lashkar e Islami this guy named mangal baagh???  What kind of a name is "mangal baagh"??  Is that even an Islamic name?  Sounds like the name of a hindu dakoo from some b rated indian movie!!!

Even though we did take some casualties, the fight seems very lop sided, a couple of dozen of our shaheeds (may Allah bless their souls) versus hundreds of takfiris jahannam raseed (may Allah rot them in the deepest corners of hell)!!!

Similarly publishing higher enemy causalities would bust enemy moral. So hundreds  might not be a correct figure.

There is a difference. My friend we are not British, yes there is war going on but its not war against people of the tribal areas but rather some idiots and people in the area understand this. That is one reason why we have friendly Laskhars emerging to tackle these foreign funded idiots. .

Just spoke to my nephew on my trip to Pakistan a couple of weeks ago. He want to do jihad and has the topi and the drama to go with it, somehow the subject of the Karachi bombing in which 43 Shia Pakistanis were killed. He said it was a good thing as they insulted the prophet pbuh. So I said 'the prophet was insulted daily, he was abused, beaten and worse, did he kill those that insulted him? ' my nephew just looked at me dazed? So I asked can you kill a p1g that's done you no wrong and is going about its own life? He replies 'no'! So I asked how then can you justify killing of innocent men women and children even if your faiths differ. He had no answer. I left him with a saying ' stop following what others said without question and to use your brain before your mouth'.

you have saved one person to think selfcritical in an already messed and confused Pakistani society with hyperactive frustrations. And have further halted his thoughts about egoistic justifying about everything because that's how he would have thought so.

All os us can bring huge results if we interact the same way by preaching and discussing with pure Jahil/ignorant Pakistanis to chhange their minds, mindsets and intentions between themselves and the society.

Seems like the TTP are counter-attacking. Your post makes it sound as if the situation is very dire despite the army having a clear numerical and tactical advantage.

in this area, terrain matters alot, its just like vietnam out there, dense jungle, no visibility, superiority of aircraft, helis and arty comes to a nil...no IFF...

There are basically two groups. Ansar-al Islam and lashkar-e-Islam. Both have been fighting since long. Its now that TTP has re-inforced the latter that things have gotten from worse to even more than worse.
