Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a Cabinet speech on the disastrous blaze consuming northern Israel and thanked leaders of countries who sent aid to help Israel battle it, including Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"We must recognize the fact that our firefighting resources cannot provide the proper response to forest fires of the type we have here, especially when accompanied by high winds," he said. (Ynet)

Netanyahu, Erdogan break ice with phone call

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli and Turkish prime ministers held an ice-breaking telephone conversation Friday in which the Jewish state thanked Ankara for sending firefighting aircraft to help quell a wildfire in Israel.

The chat was the first between Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan since the Israeli prime minister took office in March 2009.

Relations between the countries had soured after Erdogan's criticism of a 22-day Gaza war launched late in 2008, and worsened further after Israeli troops killed nine Turkish activists while intercepting a flotilla bound for Gaza this May.

"I told Erdogan that we appreciate the major efforts during this time and I am sure that this will be a gateway to improving relations between the two countries," Netanyahu said as two Turkish firefighter aircraft made their way to Israel.

In Ankara, a statement said Erdogan had expressed condolences for the 41 Israelis killed in the blaze Thursday.

"In the face of this disaster it was a humanitarian and Islamic duty for us to help," said Erdogan, adding Turkey would be "ready to make any form of help for the injured."

Ties between long-time Mediterranean rivals Greece and Turkey improved greatly after Athens rushed to help the rescue effort after a massive 1999 earthquake in Turkey. Israel also helped with the earthquake relief effort.

Greek and Turkish firefighting planes flew side by side in Israel Friday as they dumped water on the flames engulfing woodland near the Israeli port city of Haifa.

However, Turkey's Anatolian news agency said Erdogan told reporters after his conversation with Netanyahu that Turkey would not fully restore relations before Israel met its demands to apologize and compensate flotilla raid victims.

"Our demands are clear and these subjects should not be mixed up," Erdogan was quoted as saying.

Israel has defended its raid as aimed at enforcing a naval blockade meant to prevent the flow of weapons to Iranian-backed Hamas Islamists in control of Gaza. It said its soldiers acted in self-defense when activists on board a Turkish-owned ship attacked them with clubs and knives.

Israeli officials have accused Erdogan of showing Israel the cold shoulder and openly criticizing its blockade of the Gaza Strip mainly as part of a bid to get closer to Iran and some Arab states still at war with the Jewish state.

One of thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks suggested Israel thought Erdogan had deep-seated religious motives for souring ties.

"He's a fundamentalist. He hates us religiously," the cable from the U.S. embassy in Ankara in October 2009 quoted the Israeli ambassador to Turkey as saying.

Israel and Turkey had forged what both saw as close strategic ties in the 1990s, including open military cooperation, making Turkey Israel's largest Islamic ally.

In times of need everybody should help one another, there is no appologists here.  Turkey is leading the way in the islamic world, they hold firm to their beliefs and also show mercy on their part even to countries they have bad relationships with now. This is the true essence and nature of Islam.  

Erdogan only provided relief to the civilians in Israel affected by the fires that includes muslim israelis as well as palestinians.  He stated that until Israel does not appologies and compensate there will be no change in diplomatic relations.  This also shows the israeli public muslims are not evil monsters as their media outlets and PR channels tend to pump out.

Well said brother. You are welcomed to correct us PDFers if anywhere we go wrong or display double-standards. I can assure Arabs and Pakistanis on the public are great friends of eachother. They will always help eachother out as history is witness to it. Our objection may only be with unjust rulers, be they ours or yours.

Turkey is always viewed by Pakistanis as a big brother or a rolemodel of Pakistan. I think it is alright, for us to be like them. But take out the elements that create differences between us muslim countries.

Turkish-Israeli talks in Geneva in bid to mend ties: source

A top Turkish diplomat met Sunday with an Israeli official in Geneva to discuss ways of settling the deep crisis between the two countries, a Turkish foreign ministry official said.

"I can confirm that a meeting took place today in Geneva," the official told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

He said the Turkish foreign ministry's undersecretary, Feridun Sinirlioglu, met with an Israeli representative, whom he could not name.

The official would not give other details.

Bilateral ties between the one-time allies plunged into a deep crisis on May 31 when Israeli forces killed nine Turks as they raided an activist ship carrying aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip as part of an international campaign led by a Turkish Islamist charity.

Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported Sunday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had sent the Israeli representative on the UN committee investigating the flotilla incident, Yosef Ciechanover, to Geneva to meet with the Turkish diplomat.

The meeting came in the wake of Turkey's dispatch of two helicopters to help fight a deadly forest fire in northern Israel, a gesture that raised hope of a thaw in the crisis between the two countries.

Turkish PM tough on Israel despite bilateral talks

ANKARA — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday urged Israel to end the blockade of the Gaza Strip as he insisted on apology and compensation over a deadly Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship in May.

A fierce critic of Israel, Erdogan spoke after Turkish and Israeli diplomats met for two days in Geneva in a bid to salvage bilateral ties, in deep crisis since the May 31 raid in which nine Turks were killed.

"If anyone wants to turn a new page, they must first admit their crime... apologise and pay compensation," Erdogan said in a weekly speech in parliament.

"And we are also saying that the embargoes -- which have been relaxed but that's not enough -- must be lifted," he said.

"If we see these steps being taken, then we will evaluate the situation... We are not acting with feelings of grudge and hatred," he added.

Erdogan has launched frequent verbal attacks on Israel since the Jewish state's devastating war on Gaza last year and defended the radical Islamist group Hamas, which controls the impoverished Palestinian enclave.

Hopes for a thaw between the one-time allies emerged last week when Ankara sent two fire-fighting planes to battle a deadly forest fire in Israel and the country's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, telephoned Erdogan to thank for the help.

Senior diplomats from the two countries met on Sunday and Monday in Geneva in an effort to mend fences.

No official statement was made after the talks and it was not immediately clear whether the meetings would continue.

The two sides are reportedly seeking a deal, under which Israel would apologise over the raid and compensate the families of victims, while Turkey would agree to send back its ambassador to Tel Aviv.

"If they are saying they want a friendly solution to the problem, we will not turn that down... But this will not change our expectations" from Israel, a Turkish diplomat, who asked not to be named, said.

The US cables disclosed by WikiLeaks revealed US and Israeli unease over Turkey's close contacts with Iran and Erdogan's criticism of Israel.

Erdogan, a former Islamist, "hates Israel" on religious grounds, one cable from Ankara said, including also the Israeli ambassador's description of Erdogan as "a fundamentalist."

In response to the flotilla raid, Ankara recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv and cancelled joint military drills. It also twice denied permission to Israeli military aircraft to use its air space.

I did answer your question, I told you Erdogan insulted Peres at international stage, and cut ties with Israel and sent the Gaza aid floatila which sailed from Istanbul and it was the Turkish people who sailed off those boats with gifts and sweets

The organisation that funded the floatila is donated by Erdogan and he himself said he will go with the next floatila but hes a busy man hes running a country

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have entered a spat Tuesday over Israel's recent contacts with Turkey which aim to end the diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

Lieberman's aides slammed Netanyahu's endeavor with Turkey in which Israel is expected to apologize for the events of the Gaza flotilla. "Apologizing to Turkey means surrendering to terror," they said.

Officials close to Lieberman completely rejected the proposal that Israel apologize to Turkey for the Gaza flotilla in exchange for "normalizing" their ties, and demanded that Turkey apologize to Israel instead.

"Israel needs to demand that Turkey apologize and that Turkey compensate Israel for the aid it gave the group of terrorists and the IHH organization who organized the Gaza flotilla, an organization that even European countries define as a terrorist group."

This harsh criticism of Netanyahu on the part of Lieberman's aides has brought the tensions between the two ministers to an unprecedented peak. Lieberman's opposition to Israel's contacts with Turkey could thwart them, or on the other hand bring about a serious coalition crisis.

Netanyahu's office refused to respond to the comments made by Lieberman's aides.

Meanwhile, the discussions between Israeli and Turkish officials in Geneva are continuing, and a senior Israeli official has said that the focus of the deliberations is the particular wording of the Israeli apology for the IDF raid on the Gaza-bound ship the Mavi Marmara, which killed nine Turkish citizens.

"We are looking for wording that would clarify that during the overtaking of the Gaza flotilla, Israel did not act out of malice," said the Israeli official.

An Israeli source close to the talks said that the discussions are at a particularly sensitive place at the moment, wherein the two sides need to present their ideas to prime ministers Benjamin Netanyahu and Recep Tayyip Erdogan to receive further instructions.
