Saudi spy network in Yemen may include as many as 30,000 agents

It seems the Saudi government is operating a covert spy network in Yemen consisting of over 30,000 agents.

They operate with almost unlimited funds and exercise major influence in that country, according to one analyst, who refused to be identified (see article: Focus on US Troops in Yemen Masks Saudi Spy Ops http://news.antiwar....-saudi-spy-ops/ ).

The Ri'āsat Al-Istikhbārāt Al-'Āmah ‎, or the General Intelligence Presidency (GIP), is the primary intelligence agency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and according to various reports it has agents all over the world, including Yemen.

In one case Saudi Arabia's intelligence agency (Riasat Al-Istikhbarat Al-Amah) placed the spy inside al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, with the goal of convincing his handlers to give him a new type of non-metallic bomb for the mission, the Los Angeles Times reported. The double agent then arranged instead to deliver the device to U.S. waiting outside Yemen. The Saudi intelligence has emerged as a major ally of the US against al-Qaeda in Yemen, with the collaboration appearing to have intensified over the past two years.

Some say it is actually the Saudi intelligence agency who are calling all the real shots in Yemen and orchestrating the stage for U.S. military involvement in that country.

The Saudi Embassy in Washington D.C. refused to confirm or deny it is operating a network of spies in Yemen, when contacted by telephone on Friday. Saying only that “the Kingdom is committed to fighting al-Qaeda as part of its ongoing cooperation with other nations, including the United States.”
It should be noted that Saudi's risk a lot for their spying activities in Yemen, in some cases they risk their very lives doing it.

That’s nothing spectacular! Anyone with some connection could get terrorist material, certainly double agents could as well, and the terrorists are quite aware of this. The non-metallic knickers bomb is still a very valid terrorist threat considering how many people travel on flights yearly and this bomb was suppose to penetrate every airport security and scanners still operational I.e. no new scanners even after this bomb was confiscated by a double agent.

It would have been spectacular if a terrorist went trough airport security and got caught red handed. but they cant risk that can they. but what if a bona fide terrorist does. then would it be a massive Saudi spy network failure?

They don't even have 30,000 with some Brain mass so I highly doubt there is any truth in this report. Knowing the Saudis and their big mouths I would say it is more like 3000. The history of arabs strongly points to the fact that they boast of things or accomplishments which are actually just not true.

Another nation which closely resembles arabs in boasting are the Iranians !!

I am not kidding ... just do some research and you won't stop laughing.

Why don't the Saudis just invade Yemen and annex it since they're having to send  spies in their thousands?

Saudis are doing no favor to US by employing that many agents. The only clear and present danger to Their Royalty is AQ. So they are keep an check on this side.</p>
