Shah orders removal of graffiti, posters for ‘Muhajir province’

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Saturday ordered the IG Sindh Police and other law enforcement agencies to immediately remove the graffiti and posters of so-called Mohajir province in various areas of Karachi.

Sindh CM chaired a high level meeting at CM House, which was attended by the IG Police, DG Rangers and other officers, which reviewed the law and order situation in the city.

The CM also directed the Commissioner Karachi to immediately remove the graffiti and posters of so-called Muhajir province in city.

Sindh CM and Federal Minister Syed Khursheed Shah also met on Friday evening and raised the issue of increasing graffiti and posters for Muhajir province. The Sindh CM and federal minister expressed their reservations as these posters and graffiti was increasing in areas of city, which supposed considered as stronghold of MQM.

I am against the name, but more provinces are definetly good for Pakistan. If Punjab and NWFP should be divided in small provinces so should be Sindh and Balochistan. I am against the thinking of those people who consider  Sindh, Punjab, NWFP, Balochistan as their Dharti, and label others as traitors of their dharti, if others wants a seperate province. The Dharti is one and only Pakistan. Those who want a seperate country wish to become independent from Pakistan (not from any provinces) are the real traitor and enemy of Pakistan. It seems like in Pakistan some people don't mind if Pakistan breaks up, but they do mind and will kill others, if anyone wishes to divide/break province.

Sindh govt acts against 'Mohajir Province' wall-chalking

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has come into action against the wall-chalking and posters  of the 'Mohajir Province' movement, DawnNews reported.

Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah held meetings with Director General of Rangers, Major General Rizwan and Sindh's Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Shah during which he expressed his disappointment over the increasing incidents of targeted killings and ordered the police and rangers to increase their patrolling in the city.

The chief minister also issued directives for eradication of wall-chalking demanding the creation of a 'Mohajir Province', from the city.

Furthermore, Local Government Minister of Sindh, Agha Siraj Durrani ordered action against concerned officers for putting up billboards of the 'Mohajir Province' movement.

The police came into actions for the implementation of the chief ministers' directives.

Those are geographical locations, where people lived and ethnic groups formed. They have existed for thousands of years. Migrants is not a geographical location, neither is Christian or Shia, or brelvi or wahhabi, or ppp, or lawyers. These kinds of boundaries are not acceptable lines to divide populations and form provinces.

So you are agreeing that people live and ethnic groups formed, so they should be allowed to keep the name of the province after their ethnicity ? I remember when NWFP name was changed to Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa not very long ago, and how the people there believed that they got their identity after 60 years of Pakistan independence, but when Hazara people wanted their identity, the same people who were cheering for Pukhtoonkhwa were labeling the Hazara people as traitors. People always say  that no Provinces should be named after ethnic lines in here, but sadly they ignore the fact that all 4 provinces of Pakistan are named after ethnic lines, even the latest one.

You people fail to understand, the geograpgical location came first, then the thousands of years of civilization, even nations where the peovinces have been created on. Muhajir is not. Geographical location, it's not an ethnicity, it's a state of residency.

Although I totally agree on not creating provinces on ethnic lines, but am a bit curious, where do you want to send the saraikis and hazaras? india? afghanistan?? or maybe mars???

The point being stop saying go back to india, people born and living in Pakistan have more rights on it than someone born and brought up in UK...

Sir in this move , the back hand is of MQM, because the move just present in those areas, which are MQM 's strong hold, where no other Political party able to work Easily.

Secondly if this is genuine move, then people of Karachi have to realised that non Mohajir's are in majority in Karachi. In the Era of 90's , Mohajir's were in Majority, but now the demographic changed.

You should be questioning the loyalty of those who want a Muhajir province, not those who oppose them. I was born and raised in the UK, I am loyal to Pakistan. I have citizenship of Pakistan, that makes me equal to anyone else with the same citizenship. It's as simple as that.

Hazara and saraiki provinces are motivated by ethnicity and in part geography, I am not fond of either, i don't think we should be dividing the country based on ethnicity. Those calling for a muhajir province are calling for a province for people who "migrated", migrated from India. They are the ones who choose to use that part of history as a division or a part of their identity around which they want to form a province. My family were muhajirs too, we went from IOK to AJK. The difference between me and the mindless idiots calling for a muhajir province is this, I consider myself Pakistani, they still consider themselves Muhajir.

That never helps. Those who peddle this BS to benefit from it, will be sheltered from any action. The people who suffer are those who relate to the BS, simply because they are suffering due to the dysfunctional state of Pakistan. We should be more sensitive to peoples feelings. We're lucky we don't have to suffer living in Pakistan as it is right now, for a lot of people it's a struggle to survive, and people will tell them "it's the fault of xyz, if i was in charge, this wouldn't happen, they neglect our needs because we are abc." It's the same mantra for everyone, "us and them" to divide and conqueror disenchanted minds.

Nope its not the same hazaras as the ones in Afghanitan, I just said that rhetorically.... and the Urdu speakers dont identify themselves with india, but, we do have a distinctive ethinc group for now.

The key is urbanization, in a generation or two a Pakhtoon kid, an Urdu speaking kid and so on would have no cultural differences what so ever...

For instance, I would feel more in sync with one of my urbane, educated Punjabi friends than say an urdu speaking guy who is not...

Punjab is not ethnic name. Punjab means 5 rivers (punj = 5 ab = water) hence land of five waters... Talking of ethnicity there is no ethnicity as Punjabi as Punjab consist of many many tribe major being Jutts(JATTS) and Gujars among many other tribes.

Your point of view will be valid if Jatts or Gujars started to asked for as Jatt or Gujar province hence it would be ethnicial name.

Similar I agree with Platis point of view, either its Pakistan or out the door. I also find these calls to be hypocritical. As on one hand if call so called urdu speakers Muhajars they cry that we are being racist and have not accepted them into Pakistani society and on other hand they ask for Mujhar province. It seems MQM is now showing its truly colours and will revert back to Mujhar Quami Movement.

Caesar I disagree. Pre independence there was no Pakistan. Drawing a line in the sand didnt make.anyone Pakistani. Buying into the ideology of Pakistan did. Millions died trying to cross that line to be a part of that ideology millions have suffered generations of poverty because thier forefathers sacrificed it all for the ideology. These people weren't born into Pakistan, they chose it and paid for that choice.  It's not the same as economic migration. I'm British because my father went half way round the world to work and earn to feed his family, I'm Pakistani because my grandfather believed in the concept of Pakistan and lost his life and his brother's life moving to become homeless, but not nationless.

The creation of different provinces has opened a can of worms. Don't tell me that we didn't see it coming. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is now chanting slogans for a new province. I don't oppose the creation of new provinces along administrative lines. However, this moronic government wanted to score cheap political points by creating a new province in Punjab. Of course, the idea is to divide the largest vote bank of Pakistan. Could this idea of divide and conquer have come at any worse time when instability and insecurity are rife? New drama in Karachi regarding Layari people thinks it’s a gang war who says it is? Recent layari operation was done against their very own People’s Aman Committee which was till last year the major criminal wing of PPP managed by Zardari’s very own ZUlfiqar Mirza, where is he now? For God's sake, we CAN NOT afford more provinces. And anybody who believes that we will somehow, by a miracle, end up cutting provinces on administrative lines has to visit Pakistan and get to know its people more. Remember we are not talking about one or two more provinces. The moment we end up carving one out, there will be voices for provinces from all over Pakistan. In order to have administrative provinces, you would need a nation with mental inclination towards, logic and sence, which to be very honest, is a far cry for the kind of idiots we have here in this country, i.e. people, who end up giving votes to thugs just because, they are their thugs. Do you honestly believe they will propagate the division of provinces on administrative lines, let alone understand the whole damned concept? What the heck administrative lines mean anyway? I mean what sort of lines are we talking about here? If its;

Population: You would end up dividing provinces down to a tehsil/ division level. And we already have division level administration.
Distance: You may end up dividing baluchistan into smaller provinces, out of which some may have a population of hundreds only.

@Zafar bhai, I totally agree with you, the people born in Pakistan are as much of a Pakistani as anybody, wonder why they still claim to be mohajirs? Heck they have been here for a couple of generations now, yet they are still immigrants. A separate province for mohajirs will be like separation from Pakistan because MQM leaders always had an evil agenda of separation. Great finding sherlock, but I have spoken about my identity on the forum already, plus, if you have any problem in comprehension then read again where I said that I dont support this call. I am in favor of smaller administrative divisions but absolutely NOT on ethnic/language bases.

I strongly feel that we have to get rid of ethnic names of the provinces as well. It would solve some problem.

Some of you may hate my guts for saying this but if we as a people are hell bent upon ignoring Allah's deen as the only true source of law and governance and have made up our minds about partaking in this secular democracy along with all the crap of separate provinces based on the kuffar of ethnic divides, then we'd might as well just break up and go merge with india.  We have for the last two generations brought insult to the sacrifices of our fore fathers and fore mothers by never even bothering to struggle to live and rule by the Islamic Creed that they sacrificed everything for.  And may I dare say,  we as a people have insulted and continue to insult the Holy Prophet PBUH by insisting on maintaining racial divides inspite of being a kalimah goh and knowing very well that Allah's messenger ordered all Muslims to live together as brethren regardless of what our ethnicity or language may be.  We deserve every single ounce of suffering we are getting.  Allah and his noble Messenger shall not be mocked.

Attack on Sindh unity rally claims 12 lives

KARACHI: At least 12 people, including three women, were killed and 35 others, including two policemen, sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a rally against the demand for a separate Mohajir province on Tuesday. Violence gripped various city areas after the incident in which 40 vehicles and six shops were torched in the troubled old town areas.

The Awami Tehrik and the City Alliance, an alliance of various political groups including the PML-N, People's Aman Committee and others, had announced a rally from Lyari to the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday against the demand for the division of Karachi. The rally began from Cheel Chowk, Lyari, and when it reached near Jodia Bazar unidentified armed men suddenly opened fire on it. The incident soon escalated into a gun-battle between rival groups.

Panic engulfed the busiest commercial area in the city, as people ran from their shops and abandoned their vehicles to save their lives. However, 35 people, including women and children, sustained injuries in the crossfire.

Firing incidents were reported from Nava Lane, Denso Hall, Dhobi Ghat, Ranchore Line, Lea Market and Juna Market. Violence soon spread to various other localities in no time. It appeared as if the attack was part of a well-planned scheme to disrupt the law and order situation in the city, police said.

The armed miscreants also attacked shops and torched vehicles which were parked in Jodia Bazaar, Napier Road, Denso Hall and other violence-hit areas. The police had placed containers and barricades near Shaheen Complex and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road to stop the rally from entering the red zone area.

People were stranded in their offices till the evening in many areas and huge traffic jams were witnessed in the old parts of the city and beyond. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Range Shaukat Ali Shah said that when the rally reached near Jodia Bazar unidentified armed men resorted to aerial firing and violence soon spread to various localities of the old city.

He, however, said that a search operation was under way in the areas from where the rally was attacked and the situation had been brought under control. According to the police, at least 40 vehicles including a bus, 13 cars and 26 motorcycles besides six shops were burnt during the violence.

Contingents of the police and Rangers finally entered the disturbed areas to quell the violence and shift the injured to hospitals. Rescue teams were called and the injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Lyari General Hospital (LGH).

According to hospital sources, they received some 30 to 35 injured, of whom 12 succumbed to their bullet wounds.

The dead were identified as Iqbal, 50, Mohammed Yousuf, 43, Aijaz, 20, Manzoor, 30, Amna, 15, daughter of Abdul Rehman, Ghazala Batool wife of Badar Hussain, Sharifaan wife of Sher Zaman, Babar, Ghulam Yasin, Ramazan, Hasib and Abdul Ghani.

The injured included: Hawa, Noman, Noor Mohammad, Mohammad Sadiq, Bahadur Khan, Azeem, Rehmatullah, Mohammad Hussain, Khalid, Zulfiqar, Jamal and Amjad.Police sources said that most of the deceased were labourers who were working in the old city areas like Jodia Bazaar and Pan Mandi. The teenaged girl Amna lived in Kharadar and had gone to the troubled spot for shopping when she got caught in thr crossfire and died.

Ghazala Batool, an employee of the Pakistan International Airlines, was also residing in the same area and was heading for her home when she was hit and died of bullet wounds. Iqbal (50) was a security guard deputed at the CHK and he was heading for his home after ending his duty when he was caught in the crossfire and died.

Talking to The News, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nasir Aftab of District South confirmed the death of 12 people in the violence and added that the police had taken positions in the old city areas, where the incidents of violence had occurred.

On a query, SSP Aftab said that no permission was taken by the parties for bringing out the rally.

Later, the Rangers and police teams launched a search operation in the Lea Market and Napier Road areas from where the firing incidents were reported.

The Rangers raided the office of a certain political party in Ranchore Lane from where they had arrested four activists and also recovered arms from their possession.

The Awami Tehreek has called for a province-wide strike on Wednesday in protest against the killings.

Meanwhile, the situation in the old city areas was tense till the filing of this report.
