Banning not necessarely, but need to tightening control over all media... as in western countries, freedom of speech didn't came without rules and sanctions clearly announced.
By the way i noticed that ARY, and GEO TEZ and maybe others too, are talking too much about bollywood actress, actors and films...that too must be controled

Anyone saw the clip they were playing about Colonel Imam's execution and Hamid Mir's comments about him. Apparently after he called Colonel Imam an American or something agent in a call to the ttp or someone, they executed him. I heard it from someone that it was being played on t.v once Geo decided to attack the Army and the ISI. Didn't see it myself though.
Basically, what I understood was that Hamid Mir seems to have actively encouraged the kidnappers to execute Colonel Imam.

GEO has been motivating the TTP for quite some time now.
For profit and their ratings, they have become the stop-gap of Mullah Radio. All they do is project damaging news about Pakistan, even if it is a lie they do it.

The best way to combat Geo would be to track its finances.
Leak their financial dealings with institutions abroad. Publicize the salary and perks each anchor of Geo is getting. Expose them.
Banning them would merely add them to the martyr list.

Sanguine, a good article. I just hope that they close the channel. It's not just about this incident and their their reaction to it, it's their whole history for past few years.
Closing them legally is the way to go instead of other methods. This way no one becomes a martyr or a hero.

I seriously doubt if Geo could be closed legally. They will make good use of the space that they have created in the legal structure since the lawyers' movement.
That said, I believe its an opportunity to make PEMRA, as an institution, stronger. PEMRA has no say at all and unfortunately successive governments have deliberately not empowered it out of the fear that it could just get too independent to the extent of defying a government. Like most of the people here, I too find GEO and the journalism it promotes quite deplorable. Nevertheless, I am not happy with how other private news and entertainment channels have been functioning. We could either go for a short-term solution and shut down Geo (which is practically way too difficult if not impossible) or we can use this opportunity to empower PEMRA and regulate print and electronic media to ensure that no other channel dares crossing the red line next time.

There was a session arranged by NDU a couple of months back and one of the speakers came all the way from Sri Nagar. So after the session, he visited the think-tank I work for and he was basically complaining how Pakistani media and the people had forgotten Kashmir issue. He told us that the only Pakistani channel they could watch out there was Geo.

WASHINGTON: A series of one after another revelations, is continued regarding the attack on renowned journalist Hamid Mir. This time it is the New York (NY) Times that has claimed that one of the attackers involved in the Mehran Base Attack, was an employee of Geo TV Network – ARY News reports.
According to details, a report of NY Times dated April 26, claimed that an employee of Geo TV Network was involved in the Mehran Base Attack in Karachi in June, 2011. He was identified during the investigations of the attack.
Quoting a current Geo manager, the report mentions that someone from inside had leaked out the information, when Geo reporter Wali Babar was killed in 2010.
Another former manager of Geo, told NY Times that a junior reporter planted by a banned organization, was involved in setting a murder plot of a news editor and a prominent talk show host at the station and the plot was foiled when the reporter confessed.

I think we have done enough one-sided and biased thoo-thooing of GeoTV. Now lets do 'ballay-ballay' highlight some of army and ISI's "acheivements" in the last few years:
-Social and economic damage to to Pakistan through brutal dictatorship, thnx to a strong judiciary, media and 5 years complete tenure, no general will now dare!
-Army chiefs signed secret drone attack deals with USA (Wikileaks confirmed) and allowed them to use Pakistani soil airbases for their operations
-Army generals are buying 8 canal plots, playing golf and building plazas while innocent civilians are at the mercy of drone attacks
-Bribes and kickbacks from defence deals and foreign defence aid (that put Zardari and ganjoo to shame) and then officers are building plazas from this loot
-Army inability to protect from attack on its airbases, not ONCE but TWICE
-ISI is only good at taking cheap shots at its own civilians, otherwise they are not effective in Afghanistan in neutralising Brahmindian targets that are fuelling hatred against Pakistan, by operting from consulates in Afgunistan
-ISI complete failure at taking out Hamid Mir and Raymond Davis
-Army's inability to react and respond to 2011 Abbottabad raid (as if they were asleep or they allowed it to happen)
-Ganjoo after more than 10 years in exile is still popular among public to be elected for the 3rd time, first-time in history of Pakistan. While army dictators are always thrown out disgracefully!
-The defence is left with obsolete equipment and loosing the 'qualitative' edge now because of corruption by army higher officials, defence deals and foreign aid money going in their pockets but not fully towards upgrades of equipment
-Hiding and protecting a convicted felon, a brutal dictator, homeless and stateless Busharraf in their cardiac institute, unecessary delays in court cases to protect that traitor!
-Army belongs in barracks and borders and not parliments, hence why they have tarnished their own image as they dont openly go in public wearing uniform frequently, read General Raheel vows to 'preserve army's dignity'
And many more can be added!
What we must understand is that army and /or ISI are not saints and godsends either. We must avoid creating rift between institutions of the state like the judiciary, parliment, media and armed forces. Yes we may disagree with GeoTV and Hamid Mir Jaffar's businesses but wishing that they and their families be 'wasted' certainly will not solve problems.
GeoTV has become very strong especially after living under times of turmoil of Busharraf. Media and judiciary have become 2 very strong institutions now and can compete with the 'once-strongest' army. Which is good because we need to have a check and balance system for each of the state's institutions.
ISI's cheif should have reisgned based even on that allegation, to protect dignity and honour of that institution.
That attack has made Hamid Mir Jaffar a hero. The scoreboard in most public view now is:
HamidMir+GeoTV = 1 vs Army+ISI = 0

Why should he have resigned? I fail to understand this logic of Ansar Abbasi and yours as well. If the ISI Chief is being called a murderer and you think he should resign, based on mere allegations, do you also think that GEO should be closed up right now because it is being labelled a traitor to Pakistan? Treachery is generally considered a more severe sin. After all the ISI chief is in a dirty business, whilst GEO claims to uphold great values etc.
What public are you talking about, I've been talking to a lot of people, all I hear is Geo miscalculated their power and messed up. People who were talking again the Army and the ISI are now very much standing behind them, very much against Geo, Have you seen anything other than Geo? You would see the whole media (baring Geo) is talking against them.
Geo has proven itself to lack journalistic integrity at the very least by presenting (as yet totally unproven) opinion in shape of fact... What else is going to come out in the future is likely to be worse.
As for the score you mentioned - khud farebi tou khud farebi hai, pas k dhol bhi suhanay lagay,

Enough? This is a GEO thread if you haven't noticed - this is not an Army thread.
Sure, you can do baley baley of Tejas on a Tejas thread, you can't drag F-16 on to a Tejas thread, and ask everyone to change the direction of the discussion - That's called trolling.

In my opinion Geo news is a third-class sub-standard tabloid institution....and it accurately reflects the current Pakistani bourgeois.........mirch-masalay, gossiping, non-seriousness on serious issues, willful ignorance and the very essence of patheticism.
Until or unless the middle-class(lower and upper) does not set a minimum standard for themselves and the country....we'll continue seeing the likes of Hamid Mir, Amir Liaquat and Meera.

The other channels may be evasive, but they don't project an outright lie or a fabricated story like what GEO did - "there is plane waiting at the tarmac to take Musharraf out of the country", causing over $2 Billion loss to the exchequer, that is the consequence of GEO's lies.
Now ISI is behind the assassination attempt - what message are they giving to the 80%? That TTP is right when they say army is the enemy.

top media channels 'buy' the prime time slots , they fund the cable operators to get the forward places in a way leaving the viewers no other choice. geo from day one bullied and shoved its hollow content onto the public. there was never any quality. geo used sensationalism and masala with a topping of vulgarity. there was no content in it ultimately,
hum and urdu tv had far better ratings when they started airing turkish dramas, everyone immediately switched to these two . geo then had to copy the tactic to get the ratings back
back to the topic, this time geo picked the wrong fight, the army tolerated their circus of musharraf impersonations for too long but the ISI is someone you dont mess with. not really .
the indian hamid mir and mir shakeel ur rehman and that twit ansar abbasi wont survive solitary imprisonment for a day in a CID 10x10 cell with a zero bulb and pin drop silence.

The Army+ISI has equal amount of dirty dirty laundry to hide than GeoTV if not more. Some of their shenanigans I have already mentioned in the above list. If GeoTv is a traitor then army because of their Mir Jaffars are responsible for seperation of West Pakistan. We may be able to hold GeoTv accountable for its action, but what about the army generals who have been given freehand? Soldiers and civilians are dying on borders and freezing conditions of Siachen while the generals are playing golf in their villas.
Thing is first time in history, army and ISI have actually met their match, which is GeoTv in the form of free media and a strong judiciary. And this makes them very uncomfortable. GeoTv has stood strong in brutal times of turmoil and torture of Busharraf. In the end GeoTv came out on top, it has made them more confident.
ARY, Dawn, PTV all will be naturally against GeoTv because they are competitors. Here on PDF love is only for ISPR or PTV which is so obsolete that world has reached the moon while PTV is still teaching how to knead dough.
GeoTv is an ideology that cannot be wiped out with force but can be contested. I despise GeoTv because of high presence of Brahmindian content and their commercialism and unethical reporting with bringing breaking news first. But I certainly do not wish that Hamid Mir is taken out in a cheap shot, or their families locked-up and tortured. Actually quite the contrary, how ironic the one who is in a lock-up is actually an ex army general Busharraf, stateless and homeles, while GeoTv has the naimat of Azaadi!
