American troops have returned to Pakistan in what is believed to be the first requested-presence mission since the U.S. military was ordered to leave last year amid a meltdown in the countries' relations.
A team of eight U.S. military search-and-rescue experts has been dispatched from Afghanistan to assist in efforts to recover 138 mostly Pakistani soldiers trapped beneath an avalanche in northern Kashmir.
A U.S. military official in Kabul, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the delicate status of the U.S.'s current relationship with Pakistan, told Fox News that the unit has not yet been tasked by the Pakistan military.
"The Pakistan military is still assessing the need, but they are there and ready to help," the official said in an email.
The U.S. was one of the first nations to offer assistance to Pakistan after the avalanche buried a small remote small base under 80-feet of snow on Saturday. The disaster happened at 22,000-ft. on the Siachen glacier in the Hindu-Kush mountains of the country's far north.
Some 112 Pakistani soldiers and 26 civilians are caught underneath the ice. So far, no one has been rescued alive and no bodies have been recovered while rescue efforts have been hampered by bad weather.
In November, the Islamabad government ordered the U.S. to withdraw its troops from Shamsi airbase where they had been supporting the Central Intelligence Agency's covert drone program amid a row over CIA operations.
The United States has maintained its Department of Defense presence at the embassy throughout that time, the U.S. military official said.
"That's a couple hundred people or so," the official added.
It is understood many are U.S. soldiers acting in an official or diplomatic capacity and are not a requested presence by Pakistan.
The Pakistani authorities, most especially the ISI spy agency, have been extremely reluctant to request American assistance in the Siachen avalanche. A Pakistani military official, requesting their name be undisclosed as they were not authorized to comment publicly on U.S.-Pak relations, told Fox News that Pakistan feels it was betrayed by the U.S. military when it last requested humanitarian assistance.
In 2010, American troops from Afghanistan were involved in months of relief missions during devastating floods but the official says the CIA used the opportunity to send in undercover agents and gain access to parts of the country where they would not normally be allowed or able to access.

A letter from Siachen
DAWN.COM | 7th April, 2012

Dear A,
“We, the willing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, with so little, for so long, we are now qualified to do anything, with nothing.”
This quotation was written diagonally on the first page of his diary as he showed me his poems. My host is a young man, whose spirits are still volatile despite the sub-zero temperature of this place. It is our first meeting. He does not know that the quotation is by mother Teresa, he does not know mother Teresa at all. He thinks it was said for him, dismissing any reason for researching its origins. The young man got engaged recently, the reason for an occasional blush whenever the subject of his future comes up. I only reached here the night before, but we are close friends now. There is something in the wind, with flakes, that urge people to speak in never-ending monologues. Discuss emotions, exchange secrets, talk about themselves – things they do not talk about ‘normally,’ not the least when they are engrossed in the workings of the ‘civilised world.’ I asked him about the quotation on the wall and he said let’s call it a day.
My room, call it my studio apartment, is a typical bunker, built on self-help basis, thanks to our meagre resources. Carved out from a hillock, it is a classical one-window room of 14×10 feet. The 10-foot high ceiling had 70 girders. Trivial information, you say? I count them every night before I can sleep. No, I have not grown insomniac, but I dare not venture out to count stars in this part of the world.
On one side, the empty cartons have been arranged, covered by gunny bags, only to be topped by the prayer mat. I have a lot of time to pray and reflect, probably since I am the closest I could get to Him. The other wall supports the bed (an arrangement of empty cartons) upon which lies an air mattress, along with our sleeping bags. Tastefully, the big-flower-print bed sheet does not permit the attention to drift to the poor structure of the bed. The dark toilet is an extension of the same room. An old cough syrup bottle has been modified with kerosene oil to serve the purpose of the lamp which practically lights up nothing. The empty ghee cans are our makeshift geysers. Basic instinct is the best aide when it comes to anatomy in the dark bathroom. The room décor is an artistic arrangement of the empty containers of food, fuel and fire. Food cartons serve as tables, fuel cans as stools and empty (fired) cartridges as bedside teapoy items. The most decorated table has boxes of chicken cubes, noodles, egg biscuits, brick-game and yes, our window to the world, the radio. Other inhabitants include a Fujika (a kerosene-lit heater), petromax, the books that you have sent and the military phone – this masterpiece of technology which connects me to you, remains silent. The weather, the snow, the wind, the electric power everything conspires against our probable communication. Reminds me how Shah Latif narrates the plight of Sassi after she had been robbed of Pannu:
“The camel (which carries Pannu) is my enemy, the wind (which is erasing the foot prints of caravan) is my enemy, the sand is my enemy and so are the brothers of Pannu,
And most of all the sun is my enemy, for having risen so late and not waking me up”
Another day has gone. The vigilant sentries change over their duties. Far from home, away from gatherings, phone calls, SMS-es, these men, I think, are doing something which can never be monetised. Purposelessly, looking against the ravishing snowstorms, their biggest foe is the weather. You can never predict its move. It sulks within and you only realise how loosely you hang between a life and death when it hits you. A minor headache turns into cerebral edema and a man full of stories, intentions, commitments and emotions becomes, what they call, a ‘causality.’
The radio is tuned up and we start receiving our dose of military bashing. A whole lot of qualified individuals start describing us as a merry-making mob, with no clue about how one can party at 20,000 ft above the mean sea level. My mind races. Huge chunks of budget for tomato puree and canned vegetables. Power hungry for morally supporting everyone that we have, people who love us and people who are the reason we live to guard this piece of land. Luxurious lives in a make-shift room with empty cartons. I think the quotation on the wall is not so over-rated.
Hope to hear from you soon…
Yours faithfully,
H

Why can't a soldier not complaint of his countrymen being SOBs? You logic is illogical because you fail to comprehend that these soldiers are also human beings who have feelings as well. They are much stronger and believe in chain of command, but when they hear their own idiot countrymen continously spilling garbage then they do form an opinion. By the way welcome to the 21 st century where unlike the stone age there are multiple means of expressing your opinions through multiple devices. In coming days and months You will hear much more of this ..... more soldiers will express their opinions ..... so get use it.

The rescure operation carried by:
400 men related to Pak Armed Forces
60 local civilians from
24/7 rescue effort
They were deployed from the first day, ONLY those who have expertise in such rescue operations.
70-80 feet depth is to get to trapped soldiers, but it was difficult from Pakistani side to reach to the soldiers. Therefore international teams have been asked to join.
They have brought radar and voice technologies with them, which is vital for the rescue operation.
- The Chinese team has arrived today.
- The Norwegian team is on the way.
- The amercain team was already there - (no big surprise though)
Loaders, dumpsters, operators of different machineries, are present.
20-21 overall plants would be installed to rescue. 50 men are going to work on them.
PAF role in the operation; 3 C-130s are dedicated to transport all equipment to the site; but due to bad weather, the deployment of equipment is delayed for the transportation.
Temperature; average minus 15 - difficult to work, but the Pakistani rescue workers are dedicated to work and rescue the trapped Pakistani armymen!

simple mathematics translates that to ( 300*300*21) = 1,890,000 cubic meters of snow... estimated weights of 1 cubic meter of newly fallen snow is approximately 70-150 kg (taking middle 100kg).
= 189,000,000 kg or int tonnes 189,000 tonnes of snow.
Though in a snow slide the snow gets compressed and air is squeezed out hence the actual weight of it could be close 950kg per cubic meter which makes it even worst.
Also American teams have not yet reached the scene while other countries have, I guess government is just delaying their presence.

Another officer under the snow is Dr. Captain Haleem Tareen. Capt. Tareen’s sister Aisha wrote these lines after the tragedy. This will tear your heart apart
"Never keep something in your heart. Just say it and then whatever respon...se you get, at least you won’t regret it for the rest of your life that you had a chance and you didn’t take it. These were the last words of Haleem Tareen in his last call a night before the incident. He talked for 19 minutes, and then the operator of the exchange interrupted our conversation and said, ‘commander wants to call [Capt. Haleem]’. And he said, ‘Ok Aisha I will call you later. You don’t worry and I don’t want to see you cry. Always remember that your brother is with you so you don’t need to worry.’
He was right. A martyr is always alive But why he said this to me? Cuz he was going to make me cry for the rest of my life He had given me a task and would call me every second day to ask if I did his work or not. And today I had good news for him. Today he was supposed to call me. I am waiting for your call my brother. You can’t go like this. You will have to come back Please come back plzzzzz. I need to tell you what you have waited so much to hear. Otherwise I will have to live the rest of my life with that thing you wanted to hear. I’m such a failure”!!!
According to our reports, SAFMA snakes have decided to launch a media campaign and propaganda war in the media to exploit the moment of tragedy at Siachen to demand a withdrawl of Pakistani forces from Siachen and Kargil regions. On the dir...ections of their masters, SAFMA would now launch another informaiton war.
We warn SAFMA and their loyalist snakes that everyone part of this sinister campaign would be added to the list of traitors in our petition in the Supreme Court. We are dead serious and will show no mercy here.
US have also joined in to bring "peace" at Siachen while Zardari also went to India to secretly discuss the issue without the mandate of army, parliment or the nation. We know the sinister games being played and now will not let the SAFMA stab the nation in the back. Already multiple articles have emerged in a organzied campaign which is the information and propaganda war.
These so called analysts were asleep for the last 28 years when India atatcked and intruded into Pak terretory and we had to fight bloody battles to reclaim our land. Now when we are frustrating the Hindu zionists, their slaves in media jump up, appearign to be so concerned at the sacrifices of our soldiers.
Allah's curse is upon you SAFMA. We will only enforce that curse upon you, InshAllah. You have been warned. Write as much as you want. We are also writing names.

have no idea, but we all know since every time something big happens in Pakistan, a political leader will come forward and inflict in the matter to show his power and "greatness".
Or as it is called in Urdu, Baadshah-e-Salaamat!
now zardari has come forward with a statement, nearly 12-13 days after the incident, then it is going to become ppp versus pml-n political arena of who came the first person who went to the area, and who can become the most caring party for the trapped soldiers in the avalanche.
provincial governments shouldn't give money to the country's own national soldiers in such situations at all, since the military has it's own funds and should use money on soldiers from their own funds rather than a provincial government gives 500.000 rupees to every soldier when every province has it's own provincial expenditures to take care of.

A number of articles have lately appeared in quick succession on the Siachen tragedy. As one of the Himalayan and Korakoram glaciers, Siachen, is the highest battlefield on the face of the Earth. While the rescue mission is still to start much-awaited information about the survivors at the time of writing, the families are undergoing a traumatic phase and whole nation is praying for them.
These articles prompt further writing on a few important aspects for underlining the need of better study, more discussions and possible improvement in existing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) especially in the on-going methodologies adopted for supervision and monitoring, reconnaissance and base camp selection in snow-laden remote valleys with icy caps all around.
There exists a system of large glaciers such as Siachen, Saltoro, Baltoro, Biafo, Hispar etc. These are surrounded by very high and steeply peaks making the whole area treacherously inhospitable and difficult even for camping. In the absence of well-prepared and properly-implemented instructions, natural disasters are more likely to occur. Although the unique Pakistani northern territory is quite familiar to our jawans, yet the present day strategic requirements are far more stringent in view of ever-evolving latest technology. The Indians are well-dug on their superiority in the satellite field.
Besides facing the usual problems of sub-zero temperatures, e.g., less oxygen, frost bites, snow blindness, difficulties in surveillance, Pakistanis inevitably need better communications equipment, data collection gadgetry and appropriate health care awareness etc. These are sine qua non to optimise the expenditure incurred on stationing army personnel and posting helping hands. Owing to the unique geographical terrain, only India and Pakistan are supposed to know the hardships and intricacies encountered. Because it is a battle-field, Pakistanis must be leaders in know-how on every aspect; it is sad that this tragedy amply exposes our shortcomings.
The oddity arises from the fact that Hindu Kush, Korakoram and Himalayan ranges have been produced by the northward impact of the subcontinent peninsula hitting Eurasian mainland during the period of continental drifts. Steepiness of peaks and range contours are said to be still undergoing compressive pressures and some of the peaks are conspicuously increasing in height as measured over longer periods of time. This important phenomenon has to be properly understood in relation to glaciers, icy sludges and avalanches. Even the slightest increase in heights would cause the infinitesimally small changing gradients to trigger drifting of loose snow and providing thrust to nearby glacier(s). Coupled with other equilibrium-disturbance causes like global warming and considerable human activity, the whole scenario becomes recipe for disasters, more than any where in the world.
This is an era of undeclared warfare through unconventional weaponry including laser beams that is ever-improving with the help of computer-aided technologies. To be on the safer side, it will not be unwise to presume the under-cover use of such special techniques. Working of HAARP is documented; triggering of earth quakes through resonance-creating equipment is well-known. Above all, it must be remembered that the area is critically sensitive for the two countries.
It has been claimed that HAARP is capable of causing big changes; it can even give a significant tilt to the Earth’s axis. While its use directly through ionosphere is not feasible for this specific area, its special localised version generating controlled beams at specific locations from nearby vantage points cannot be ruled out. How to see to that is an exercise which requires serious thinking. Furthermore, eroding mechanically through secret missions the control points of glaciers (mainly close to edges) to result in well-defined covert outcomes has to be guarded against. Even if these plans appear too risky or somewhat prohibitive due to budgetary constraints (for both sides), yet, we cannot remain oblivious to such eventualities and need to have sufficient funds diverted for on-site studies and preparation of contingency plans on modern lines.
It is assertively stated that a knowledge about glaciers marked as dangerous would not help until and unless expertise in living in these areas is achieved. Let us not forget that nations cherish memories of hearing only good news from battle-fields.

Rescuers continue to search for people buried under avalanche on the 16th consecutive day.
The weather has once again turned very cold due to overcast conditions and chilling winds. The bad weather posing difficulties in rescue activities but could not affect the pace of work at site.
The excavation work is being expanded with the help of machinery. The rescuers have also changed their strategy and are now digging from the tip of the avalanche instead of from different locations.
The rescue teams are hopeful to reach the men buried under avalanche today.
According to ISPR, a probing search was also carried out at three spots. Some life jackets, pieces of Igloo and medicines have been found at the site. These items were found 600 Meters from the original location. The items recovered showed the magnitude of destruction and nature of the avalanche.
The entire process of striking down of avalanche took less than five seconds as intimated by WAPDA Team Hydrological experts.
135 men including 124 soldiers and 11 civilians were buried under the avalanche on April 07.
