KARACHI: Robbers struck the head office of the Edhi Foundation in the Mithadar area of Karachi where they held all the staff including renowned philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi hostage and made away with gold, foreign currency and other valuables worth millions of rupees.
Eight robbers stormed into the Edhi headquarters around 9:45am and broke into storage lockers that contained five kilograms of gold, foreign and local currency worth millions of rupees, according to Faisal Edhi who is the son of Abdul Sattar.
The robbers easily managed to escape from the site after an extended period of looting.
Abdul Sattar Edhi told Dawn that the looted valuables included deposits made by people.
"This [dacoity] has never happened before...I have been held up before, but was let go without being looted," Edhi said.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah took notice of the incident and ordered police to immediately arrest the culprits behind the incident.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against unknown persons at the Mithadar police station on the complaint of Faisal Edhi.

The same Pakistanis who are being badmouthed by these self hating roaches are the very same people responsible for giving Edhi the money in the first place, every rupee worth. I recommend that rather whining like b1tches, people should donate what they can to ensure Edhi foundation services are unaffected by this financial loss.
Clutch, the above was not at all aimed at you, rather an expression of annoyance at some commentators on Dawn.

I remember hearing back in the day a caravan was robbed in Sindh and midway through the robbery the robbers realized that one of the passengers was Mrs Bilkees Edhi (I think), Edhis wife, and they gave everything back and let them go saying that when they get shot up the Edhi Ambulences would come and take their bodies away so they couldn't do it.
So I must say this is a very surprising incident - close to that robbery where they robbed an orphanage and slapped around the kids for good measure as well. Some people just like to go the extra mile to make sure their major crime is also a major sin.

That share reflects the people as the people reflect their leaders.
But then again i can take back my words and say proud few messed people live in Pakistan, but when i we us or she and he takes a look at their own familymembers, then the mess can clearly be seen there immidiately; corruption, looting, taking sides for personal gains and backstabbing their own loyal entrusted blood relatives, seizing inheritage and becoming a burden for another.... Poora pagalkhana aur circus hai...
Thats the share we have in them, who we are freaking frustrated and tired of, how arent average Pakistanis fed up with looters, robbers, injustice, oppression, politics, economy.....
Peace

Key suspects in the October 19 robbery at a center of the Edhi Foundation are still at large, investigators said on Saturday, denying media reports of arrests. A group of robbers had held philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi and his staff hostage and looted gold and cash worth millions of rupees from the centre in the Kharadar neighbourhood of Karachi last Sunday.
Media reports claimed on Saturday that the key-suspect, identified as Rashid, was arrested during a raid in the Korangi area and the looted cash recovered from his possession.
However, officials from District South police, Special Investigation Unit and Crime Investigation Department said they didn’t make any arrest. “We are conducting raids but so far we have not apprehended any suspect,” investigation team in-charge SSP Khawaja Naveed told The Express Tribune.
He said 35 suspects, including former and serving staffers of the Edhi Foundation, have been questioned, but no clues have been found so far.

With all due respect of the great man and his work, I have these doubts:
Why were the banks not used to deal with the money and gold? Wonder what is the limit of cash/gold that an institution can hold at any given time.

Isn't it illegal to proxy-hoard wealth? And who certifies the origin -- white, black, grey -- of the wealth? And cash?
Are bank lockers even less reliable than an office building in Karachi? And Karachi witnesses a lot of violence, I believe.
Though the incident is indeed tragic, may be it could lead to a more serious look at the monetary laws.
The gold is what people left there for safe keeping. Nobody expected him to be robbed. Bsnks are untrustworthy.
