i have a question,,
my normal routine is quiet hectic to say the least, i dont get enough time to eat fruits etc.
does taking vitamin supplements cater to all the nutrition needs if one cant take fruits ?
my mother , being a doc, is strictly against this idea. she says nothing can beat natural

My dad is a doc too....and he is not against the idea per say but he too believes that nothing beats the natural because the mutli-vitamin pills are synthetic apparently.

unless one suffers from specific micronutrient deficiency, or are part of a specific sub population these supplements are not needed and in some cases can actually be detrimental in conjunction with certain underlying conditions or habits. scientific evidence is mounting against supplementation in the absence of deficiencies. it would be better to focus on slowly/incrementaly making healthy adjustments in eating and lifestyle. just my two cents as a former medical professional.

another thing regarding multivitamins is that they are pretty much unregulated, and the manufacturing process produces both the levo and dextro rotatory isomers of the molecule , while the human body only uses one or the other in the various biological processeses. e.g. amino acids preferred are the L form while in cases of carbs the D form is preferred. in cases of of certain vitamins notably fat soluble ones cis and trans forms make it even more complicated. This is not to say that the unused form is totally wasted; rather the body breaks it down and they undergo denovo synthesis--an energy inefficient process, and the body tends to shy away from energy inefficient processes in general. the synthetic supplement industry takes advantage of the unregulated nature of the industry to cut corners by not separating the various isomers and enantiomers the body actaully needs into the pills. thus the pill may state it has the recommended daily allowance, but you as a consumer simply dont know how much of it is in the usable form, from pill to pill and batch to batch from the same brand. thus in case of supplemantation the more expensive and established brands in fact do contain a more usable form. in other words the more you pay the better the quality, but again only useful if you really need supplementation in light of signs and symptoms of deficiency, or as a preventative measure in certain population subsets most notably if you are a pregnant woman or one considering concieving to supplement with folic acid and iron according to recommended scedules by your ob/gyn, and as far as i can gauge you are not a fine young Pakistani honey in her fertile years.

I avoided taking protein supplements and instead increased my intake of dry fruits (mostly peanuts), chicken breasts and fish to gain more muscle mass. I actually gained muscle more faster than some guys at the gym who took supplements. But the downside is the added calories and carbs which come with the natural protein rich foods, which makes it harder to lose fat.

it depends on the definition of long run. remember one thing in your physical targets, the human body has certain parameters defined by the universal principle of form following function. what do you believe the normal/natural parameters are that define the limits that safely permit the body to carry out its function in the arid and heat intesive environment that is Pakistan? Also you must reflect on what your internal ideal body image is in light of what the aforementioned principle of form following function, as well as the overwhelming bombardement of what a consumerism driven media says what should be the ideal body image we as a society should aim for. In my practice in the medical field in Pakistan, I have come to the conclusion that the protein supplementation in conjunction with the high prevalence of renal problems that far too often lead to renal failure, specially in light of pre-existing dehydration/poor hydration status almost univerally found among Pakistanis living in the very hot Pakistani climate, specially in the urban environments which are hotter than the surroundings due to preponderance of concrete, ashpalt, bricks, etc. and the higher levels of stress related hormones present in urban dwellers which are known to foster dehydration and stress the waste elimination systems of the body (hepatic and renal), are a very poor decision.

p.s: if the previous post's sentence structure is too cumbersome, the short and skinny of it is that in the absence of adequate hydration and high prevalence and incidence of renal failure, protein supplementation should be approached with a heavy dose of respect.

i agree, the body has a hard time ejecting the concentrated protein unless one gulps a lot of water
regarding hydration, a simple pi,ss color ID test taught to us back in the oil and gas days is suffice to check for body hydration levels.

urine color is an unreliable predicter. if you are training seriously and supplementing get routine urinalysis; Pakistanis also have high prevalence of diabetes, a condition that produces dilute colorless urine frequently. remember if you are totally healthy and feel even slightly thirsty you are already 5% dehydrated.

Was having a discussion with someone....and they said that most of the chicken meat is high in estrogen because of the hormone injections, plus a lot of the food products now a days in the market are soy based etc.
Therefore I was just wondering if it is true, I am very cautious when it comes to my food intake.

Gulf countries usually follow suit.....Pakistan is a different story, watch few episodes of Sar-e-aam.
So let's assume I am in a "developed" country, how in the best possible way should I balance my diet?

organic and free range. or get some land and grow/raise your own. Too bad it has come to this; nevertheless this is the reality, even then there's litttle control on air/water/ground quality, and the interaction with other critters are uncontrolable variables. So it's your choice on the food you trust to put on your family's table.

I invested into an organic/free-range co-op about 10 years ago. It has since grown tremendously and I get a good steady stream of veggies, meat, milk, eggs on top of having a good increase in the value of my shares. Of course the biggest benefit is I know exactly what goes into my food, no growth hormones, no chemicals, no adulterants.
It will be a tougher model for large populations to adapt, people will need to be educated about the benefits and also be willing to pay a certain premium in the short term....but it has big savings in the long run if you look at the externalities it solves compared to the traditional intensive farming culture we now have. They are also much more adaptable at the small scale level, this is the selling point that has to be promoted by society...all it needs is a similar amount of backing worldwide by govts and banks in providing small finance so that farms can come to the urban areas as well (reducing the supply chain expenses).
For now though I always tell people to look up their local coops that promote organic and free range for investment opportunities. Even if it doesnt grow by leaps and bounds, the pay offs in what you get are great. Leaving the health aside, just the taste of the food is much better be it the chicken (less fat, more meat, hearty flavour) or the veggies. If you cannot afford to invest a good size chunk of money or are afraid to do so, you can just buy organic and free range food...that will help those farmers and they can expand their reach and presence.
The GMO and farming chemical firms have very powerful lobbies, second to that of big oil and defense in north america....so it will be tough going....but hopefully in the end humanity will find a model for food production that doesnt deplete human and environmental health in hidden ways.

If you're living in the west and concerned about the hormone contents of your diet take the following steps;
1. Eat organic/free range products. Try to get fruit/veg from the market rather than supermarkets if you can.
2. Eat less meat. I can't think of a week where i went without it. It's not a healthy way to live. If i don't have meat one day, i will the next, for certain.
Regarding protien supplements, avoid those with creatine, it will cause cramps and doesn't give you any long term gains, it only stores water in the muscles, makes you look pumped. Also generally increase water intake, the worst that will happen is you p1ss more often.

Rice is a fundamental food in most cultural cuisines around the world and an important cereal crop that feeds more than half of the world’s population.
The various benefits of rice can be found in more than 40,000 varieties of this food that is available in the world. Here are a few of its health benefits suggested by organicfacts.net.
Source of energy
Since rice is abundant in carbohydrates, it acts as fuel for the body and aids in the normal functioning of the brain. The vitamins, minerals and various organic components further increase energy levels.
Cholesterol-free
Rice does not contain harmful fats, cholesterol or sodium. Low levels of fat, cholesterol and sodium will help reduce obesity and the health conditions associated with being overweight.
Maintains blood pressure
Rice is low in sodium so it is considered one of the best foods for those suffering from high blood pressure. Excessive sodium is also associated with heart conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes.
Cancer prevention
Whole grain rice, such as brown rice is rich in insoluble fiber that can protect against many types of cancer. Besides fiber, rice also has natural antioxidants which also stimulate antioxidants to scour the body for free radicals. Free radicals are byproducts of cellular metabolism that can cause the mutation of healthy cells into cancerous ones.
Skin care
Medical experts say that powdered rice can be applied topically to cure certain skin ailments. The antioxidant capacity also helps delay the appearance of wrinkles and other premature signs of aging
