ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani held an extremely important meeting with President Pervez Musharraf at the Army House Rawalpindi late on Wednesday. The meeting continued till after midnight lasting more than three-and-a-half hours. This was their longest one-on-one encounter. The meeting, which was significant in view of the current political and security situation in the country, gained further importance as it took place after day-long consultations of the Army chief with his important commanders. Brigadier Faheem Rao has taken over the command of the Triple-One Brigade in place of the president's loyal commander Brigadier Aasim Bajwa. The commando unit looking after the security of the Presidency has been changed with another unit. Highly placed sources said late on Wednesday evening that President Pervez Musharraf has made up his mind to call it a day and he can make an announcement in this regard any time. His closest aides are of the view that after losing all hope of survival in power the president has made up his mind to lead a retired life. Sources said though the president's official spokesman denied this impression, Musharraf has no option left but to quit. The president has already been asked by 'important officials' not to think about any step that may further aggravate the already fragile political situation in the country. Musharraf has consented to leave the Army House immediately and he may move to the President House within 48 hours before calling it a day. "There is no question of any extra-constitutional step by him or on his behalf. The president has lost the capacity to invoke constitutional provisions like 58-2 (b), dissolving the assembly and the government. The question of introducing an impeachment motion would not come as the president will leave office and get a safe passage. The drop scene of the drama that started on March 9 last year is bound to appear any time soon," the sources said. Meanwhile, Brigadier Aasim Salim Bajwa, who served President Pervez Musharraf as his military secretary in his initial days and was considered to be the most loyal Army officer of the president, was made commander of the Triple-One Brigade, which is responsible for the security of the president, federal capital and Rawalpindi, by President Pervez Musharraf before relinquishing the office of the Army chief. This Brigade has always played a main role in staging coups in the past. Brigadier Bajwa also provided Musharraf admirable assistance in tabulation of his book 'In the Line of Fire'. He was due to take part in war-course in August this year but is now proceeding for another course to the United States next week. Brigadier Faheem Rao has been appointed Commander Triple-One Brigade. He has already taken over the charge of the Brigade, the sources said. |

Thats what GEO's "sources" are telling us.
It ain't over till the FAT lady sings. I will gladly go down with the ship. Because Nawaz, Zardari or the like have nothing to offer this nation. Btw, expect fuel to be Rs. 95 per liter before september this year (after WB wants Pakistani govt to stop subsidizing the fuel by Rs. 30 per liter) and close to Rs. 200~250 per liter before the next year starts, because once subsidies end, and fuel options for Jan Next year are at $250/barrel right now. Just imagine everything that will happen following this. All i have to say is ....... Congradualations. All the Musharrafis need to switch loyalty to Kayani. The king is dead, long live the king. If it happens than it would be a very hard day for me to digest .. but keeping in mind of so many similar statements I hope it does not happen. All i have to say is ....... Congradualations. Yeah .. atleast for the first week majority of the fools would be exchanging sweets ... after that they will get grilled alive ! Welcome. |

Do you expect to be impeached by Pakistan Zindabaad & Saira? No, but I have no intention of following the "the next best thing" or a new bandwagon to jump. Pakistan lost its best oppertunity to become something, we will now be unfortunately defanged of our nuclear arsenal, and maybe more. I guess, the less said the better. Do you expect to be impeached by Pakistan Zindabaad & Saira? :D He will get a lot of told you sos... Lekin I expect him to have alot of similar arguments as the price of oil goes up and the situation worsens... Pesonally, I think its going to be good for Pakistan... The govt would no longer have the excuse that Moshe is pulling the strings... The army will also become dis associated from the politics of the country which is a very very good thing... People will be able to lambast politicians and political parties instead of the armed forces as an institution... Musharaf had completed his decade, i had personally, in my family had predicted his demise before the 10th anniversary of his takeover. Simply because thats how things work in Pakistan. 10 years of one setup than bam. Its out. But, atleast you have pointed out some silver lining. But what i am afraid off is that these guys are not doing anything to ensure that a future coup will not happen, and i am not talking about some constitutional change, which will be the first thing thrown out when a coup happens, rather concrete steps to earn long-term confidence from the masses, so they never support a military takeover again. OOOO and i will be one running "I told you so" because you picked the far far ... worse of the two evils, Nawaz & Zardari combo. They have already started opening cases against each other. :) -------------------- MUSHARRAF ZINDABAD!

If he does step down, then it will be the end an era and a good era too. No one expected him to stay forever. I'm ranking him 2nd after Jinnah and Liaquat Ali in my books. Best thing to have happened to the country. Much respect.
And now watch Pakistan crumble when 10% and Ganja wreak havoc. I'm expecting a massive US air attack in the FATA region maybe a temporary incursion. The army ofcourse will do nothing because our civilians who will now give the calls will roll over and play dead. Minimum thats going to happen is certain sanctions will be slapped especially once the Dems come into power. Geo TV and ARY will probably keep on going as ganga's mouthpieces, but any substatial independence of the media will be reduced. I'm expecting things to get worse in Karachi and violence wise and provincial disharmony will be at an all time high. And the great thing is...the people voted for it. So enjoy. But then again, I hope I'm wrong. |

President, COAS had a routine meeting: ISPR
Updated at: 1145 PST, Thursday, May 29, 2008 ISLAMABAD: Confirming news reports that the Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had held a routine meeting with the President, the spokesman of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Wednesday’s meeting was a routine matter. As regards posting of 111 Brigade Commander, the spokesman said that the subject posting was part of a bulk posting order that included 478 officers due for regular posting. The spokesman said Military Secretary Brigadier Asim Bajwa, having completed his command tenure was proceeding for a professional course and there is no abrupt change in it. He also contradicted the news that commandos deputed on security duties with the President are being replaced. Not a single commando has been removed from its present assignment, he said. Similarly, the relief and rotation of Army unit detailed for the guard duties with the President is a routine matter which is planned atleast six month in advance. The President’s spokesman Rashid Qureshi also termed the meeting a routine matter and said news about President’s resignation was unfounded. Well, I am suspicious of the theory presented behind the news. Most likely, it is wet dream of Nawaz that reports are crunching so that what they want does happen. But there could be some truth in the news too as it is possible that Musharraf may have decided to have a day and leave. Because what I know, Musharraf tried to resign few times even before 2002. What I heard that once he wanted to resign when core commanders were not completely behind him banning some of terrorist outfits. Actually, it seems that Musharraf is not interested in Politics else he would have never tangoed with PPP or compromised his stance against BeNazir and Nawaz to let them back.
Other remote possibility (I mean remote possibility) is that Musharraf might resign and join PML-Q as President of the party, as if it was me in his place, I would have done that (but maybe Musharraf is too old for that and have no one to follow him in PML-Q, as Pakistani politicians with mostly retarded voters need heir to survive ... one big reason behind PPP survival in Pakistan and Congress survival in India). One thing is for sure and that is, once Musharraf is gone then the party that would lose most would be PPP. Reason is that, most problems the party had with Army at National level was PPP and party that lost most men in the hand of army is PPP (Zia operation in interior Sindh). Even Army created IJI against PPP and when sacking government, army was always bias and supported sacking of PPP government (twice) but when Nawaz government was sacked (1993) they got him reinstated and got the President (Ishaq) sacked. They kept supporting Nawaz until the day Nawaz himself decided to start challenging Army and demeaning the forces. Well, Nawaz even tried to stop Nuclear test for couple of billion dollars in aid from USA resulting in Gen Karamat to force that test and pay by getting Sacked by Nawaz just before his retirement, then Nawaz started to sh*t in front of USA and India under the pressure by Clinton on Kargil issue, than he tried to sack and kill an Army Chief (Musharraf), resulting in Army sacking the thug. Thus, after 22 years (1977 to 1999) PPP got someone from Army first time who decided to play fair with PPP else it was not a big deal for Armed forces (with President Musharraf as head) to get whatever government they wanted in Pakistan to their liking. Obviously, Nawaz wants to get rid of Musharraf as he believes that once Musharraf is gone, Army would start patronage of his party and most likely PML-Q would crumble making PML-N stronger. He also knows that even if Musharraf would not go than also his destabilising the government would get another ‘Martial Law’ and new election when he might come up stronger, as in 2008 election he could not even get 19 percent of cast votes (8 percent of total votes), all from north Punjab, and that also when JI, TI and many other anti-Musharraf votes fell to him, plus he had full support of Judiciary, media, civil-crooks and NGOS whom he bribed, Well, he must have also realised that he did not get more vote than PML-Q even in Punjab, and stood lowly third in Pakistan when vote is concerned, getting ousted from all provinces except North Punjab. He also knows that his government even in Punjab is a bone that Zardari threw to him else PPP could have formed government in Punjab too. His only fear must be that if PML-Q would keep their ground together he would be out of politics forever but he is gambling that once Musharraf is gone, PML-Q might crumble. So, destabilising the boat is in the interest of PML-N. [It is stupid to believe as some would like to believe that Musharraf was doing anything that army did not wanted or that Musharraf could not have chosen anyone who would stand behind him as Army Chief at all cost (when he choose Kiyani) or that Army would be less loyal to decision by Musharraf as President and would care for political goons. When selfish and corrupt like Zardari could find a loyal person like Gillani whom Zardari could not know more than what an army general knows of people working under him, how people could even get absurd ideas that Kiyani (whom Musharaf must be knowing from his early years in Army and promoted him from Colonel to Brigadier to Major Gen to Lt Gen to Head of ISI to Army Chief) would go against Musharraf for corrupt thugs like Nawaz and Zardari. ... ... ... As for my logic, I believe that in Pakistan Army there could not have been any person closer and trustworthy to President Musharraf than Kiyani for Kiyani to reach the post of Army Chief. To me, all the created perception that Army is neutral and that they acted as neutral and so on, or that they are out of politics, it all happened with consent of President Musharraf. Just imagine that even charges against CJ, there was one by Kiyani (as chief of ISI) but it was withdrawn at that time by Presidency ... and that could not have happened without consent of President ... that is obvious and sign that Musharraf even at that time decided to make Kiyani uncontroversial and to make him army chief, as later it was Musharraf that made Kiyani Chief of Army too]. |

Musharraf's Spokesman Denies Report Pakistan President to Quit
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's office denied a report that he is set to resign after a key ally was replaced as commander of troops stationed in Islamabad. Rashid Qureshi, a spokesman for Musharraf, also denied that the president's security detail had been changed. The News, an English-language daily, reported earlier today on personnel changes and said army commander Ashfaq Parvez Kayani pressed Musharraf to step down in a meeting last night. The army confirmed it had replaced Musharraf's former military secretary, Aasim Bajwa, as commander of the 111 Brigade, which deploys troops in and around the capital. The reassignment was routine, according to a statement from the office of military spokesman Athar Abbas. ``A section of the press is trying'' to ``sensationalize routine functional matters,'' the statement said. Musharraf faces increased pressure after the main leader of the ruling coalition, Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Asif Ali Zardari, last week declared him ``a relic of the past.'' Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup and remained for eight years as military ruler before quitting the army under popular pressure in November. The 111 Brigade has played a key role in either conducting or preventing military coups, including Musharraf's seizure of power from then prime minister, Nawaz Sharif. Musharraf named Bajwa to head the unit last year. Chief of Pakistan army ‘coup brigade' transferred The commander of an elite Pakistan army unit deployed during previous coups has been transferred, the military said on Thursday, amid growing political pressure on President Pervez Musharraf. The army said the transfer of Brigadier Asim Bajwa away from the helm of the 111 Brigade based in Rawalpindi, a garrison city adjoining Islamabad, was a "routine" matter that was ordered a month ago. The brigade occupied key installations during military coups in 1977 and again in 1999, when then-army chief Musharraf came to power. It was also involved in last year's operation against the extremist Red Mosque. An army statement said Bajwa -- known in official circles as a Musharraf loyalist -- "having completed his command tenure is proceeding for a professional course and there is no abrupt change in it." The posting was one of nearly 500 ordered by general headquarters a month ago, it added. It did not name the brigade's new commander. The military also downplayed speculation about a meeting between army chief General Ashfaq Kayani and Musharraf on Wednesday night, saying they "had held a routine meeting." Kayani took over from Musharraf, a key ally in the US-led "war on terror", as head of the military in November. The army spokesman "regretted that a section of press is trying to unnecessarily sensationalise routine functional matters." The posting was reported in the English-language daily The News, in an article that said Musharraf had decided to quit. Musharraf's spokesman on Wednesday dismissed rumours about his resignation as "nonsense". Former premier Nawaz Sharif, the man ousted by Musharraf nine years ago, on Wednesday said the ruling coalition that won elections in February had agreed to expel Musharraf from power. Sharif met the widower of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, a day before that to discuss a package of constitutional amendments to clip Musharraf's wings. Pakistan Stocks Close Near Nine-Month Low on Political Concern Pakistan's stock index closed near a nine-month low amid concern investors will renege on payments for shares after prices dropped as much as 23 percent this month. The measure, the worst performer this month among 89 major indexes tracked by Bloomberg, is on course for the largest drop since May 2000. A group of stockbrokers flew to the capital, Islamabad, last night to persuade Asif Ali Zardari, head of the main party in the ruling coalition, to take measures to bolster sentiment. Foreign investors have become net sellers as Zardari seeks to curb the powers of President Pervez Musharraf, whose rule since October 1999 boosted the benchmark almost 10-fold. ``We went to Zardari with the hope that the government will take immediate confidence-building steps,'' Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, chairman of AKD Securities, among the biggest brokerages, said by phone from Karachi. ``A committee of 15 or so people has been formed and we hope for investor-friendly measures to regain confidence since the market is in bad shape.'' Foreign investors had sold a net 13.2 billion rupees ($195 million) of shares this month as of May 17, according to the central bank's Web site. The Karachi Stock Exchange 100 index closed 0.2 percent lower at 12,235.05 after dropping as much as 4.5 percent to a 13-month low. Stocks rose later in the day amid speculation state-run funds became buyers to benefit from lower prices. ``Institutions, including those owned by the government, came in to buy shares which had fallen to attractive levels,'' said Atif Malik, a research analyst at JS Global Capital Ltd. ``That's what led to the noticeable recovery later in the day.'' `Confidence-Building' As many as 100 Pakistani investors and brokers gathered at the Karachi Stock Exchange, shouting anti-government slogans outside the trading hall and in the parking lot to protest against the decline in share prices. Brokers and investors are concerned the government will resist appeals to keep a capital gains tax exemption on shares in the June 7 national budget. Investors don't currently pay a tax when the value of their shares rises. The exemption was granted in 1975 and has since been extended every few years. ``Pakistan Peoples Party has always been business friendly,'' Zardari said in an interview with GEO TV today after meeting the brokers. ``We understand the challenges and we have all the solutions.'' Customers have two days to pay for stocks after purchases, according to Karachi Stock Exchange rules, causing concern the rapid decline in values may prompt them to fail on payments, causing their brokers to default as well. In addition to sliding share values, investors have to pay higher interest rates on any debt incurred in order to trade stock. The State Bank of Pakistan increased the benchmark rate for the second time this year, effective May 23. The central bank raised the discount rate at which it lends to commercial banks by 1.5 percentage points to a six-year high of 12 percent to curb inflation. `Severe Crunch' An increase in the cost of borrowing money to buy shares to 24 percent from 14 percent ``a few days ago'' has hurt liquidity, said Imran Khan, head of research at First Capital Equities in Karachi. ``Worries about the imposition of a capital gains tax are also weighing on investors.'' The stock index is also declining because of speculation Musharraf has decided to resign, said JS Global Capital's Malik. Musharraf may resign within 48 hours, GEO TV reported today. Rashid Qureshi, a spokesman for Musharraf, denied the report. Zardari, co-chairman of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party, May 29 sought support from former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's faction of the Pakistan Muslim League for constitutional amendments to transfer powers to the government from the president, Ahsan Iqbal, a spokesman for Sharif's party, told reporters after the meeting in Islamabad. Two-thirds of lawmakers can approve the proposed constitutional change to end Musharraf's right to dismiss parliament and appoint Supreme Court judges. -------------------- Respect to all our Military & Intel Agencies. Muhammad Mian Somro is called on urgently, he was on freign tour. He may be the next president for temporary time.
There are also news that Musharraf is arrested. I hear this news from a colonal who is serving in GHQ and lives in our Rawalpindi house on rent. He said that on 13th of May Musharraf tried to change Kiyani with General Taj as Chief of Army Staff who is his relative and very close to him. The Govt. (Zardari & NS) is not ready to give him safe exit. they just want to file the case of Kargil War, 12th May & lal Masjid Incidents Against Him. Now Musharraf wants to go in Turkey but its toooooo late -------------------- Every traitor in this country is rewarded and every HERO is to face humilation, thats what for we got this country.

QUOTE Pakistan stock index falls to 14-month low amid Musharraf resignation rumors, economic woes KARACHI, Pakistan: Pakistani stocks have fallen to their lowest level in almost 14 months as swirling talk that President Pervez Musharraf will resign adds to concern about the country's economy. Thursday morning, the Karachi Stock Exchange's 100-share index fell 4.2 percent to 11,742.83. The index hasn't touched that level since early April, 2007. The plunge followed a report in a Pakistani newspaper — quickly denied by Musharraf's spokesman — that the president has decided to quit. Atif Malik, head of research at JA Global Securities, said, "The political uncertainty and the media assertions about the President's resignation gave investors the jitters." The benchmark index has lost about 25 percent from a record high in April. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/29/...tan-Markets.php This post has been edited by instantexcess: May 29 2008, 06:28 AM -------------------- MUSHARRAF ZINDABAD!

After denial by Presidency regarding resignation report, KSE recovered all losses (in morning KSE lost over 500 points but once denial came, recovery started and KSE ended only 20 points down). |

Well, I think that Anxious report is ridiculous as what I believe Nadeem Taj became Lt General not even a year ago and thus I do not think that he is even eligible for Army Chief post. Second thing is that, I am not sure if Nadeem Taj is related to Musharraf. What I know, it is Nadeem Ijaz and not Nadeem Taj who is related to Musharraf and I think Nadeem Ijaz is Maj General and not Lt General. [Please correct me if I am wrong].

Looks like Pakistan's economy & Nawaz sharif stand on the opposite sides of a river, that can never come togeather. People of Pakistan already gave him 8% of the vote, but even those 8% have to choose between Nawaz or Pakistan's economy.

I was thinking to go to Pakistan and move all what I invested out of Pakistan in February than decided that to let it stay there until July, but never thought that these people would behave as they did. I was thinking that stock market will lose points slowly but they have created havoc. Personally, I have lost fortune since political crooks have taken over. |

Again, let's go back and do the ABC & 123 all over.
Parliament/PM gives recommendation to President, and then President endorses. President is Musharraf, and why will he endorse anything that NS says, who is Nawaz Sharif anyways, just a non-entity, no one at best. Why would Musharraf even endorse removal of Kiyani, he brought him in? And without Presidents endorsement, nothing changes. PM cannot force anything if the PA is not in agreement with the recommendations. Kayani was asking Musharraf for advice. If in an unfortunate event, what would be the best step for the army to take, given all the options. Example: Should we take over the airports first then the ministrys, you are more experienced, or should we make NS dissapear and arrest Zardari first? Pakistan Army (serving generals and corp commanders, not retired non-issue personnel drinking tea with landlords) still backs Musharraf 100%. -------------------- Napoleon Bonaparte: The world suffers a lot, not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people!

Bhai, I am loosing around 100K USD, but that includes the effect of devaluation and Karachi Stock market crash. As for CGT, I do not think that it would affect us as what I know that if it would come, it would be like no CGT if you have same stock for more than 6 months (so it would be loss for speculators). But CGT may affect us indirectly, as investment in Stock Market would reduce, reducing any gains (or even possible loss) to KSE-index. As for KSE, I believe that Pakistan economy is still strong and if stability would come, it may bounce back. For instance, if another Martial Law comes in few months time and that is quite likely if things go out of control (what I believe is that this martial law could be very bloody too). On the other hand, if things keeps as it is, no sense comes back in political parties, Musharraf resigns and military do not moves than Pakistan economy could crumble and I can only hope that this does not happen. |

Salim, Imho, the only way out for Pakistan right now is that PML-N is sent to the opposition benches, than they can continue their tamasha, no one will care as he will be further away from Pakistan's economy than a elephant in Alaska. However, that will force PPP to join hands with PML-Q and MQM. PPP has already made amends with MQM and Manzoor Watto's induction into PPP today was an excellent development and could indeed be the first step towards a longterm stable Pakistan, as well as ensuring that this parliment completes its five years. Neither will impeeching bring stability because Nawaz is a mad dog, after musharaf goes home he will be on Zardari's thorat and Pakistan's economy will head towards a complete melt-down. Nor will a marshal gain any points with international investors or doners. Pakistan only has one way out and thats through ditching Nawaz from government and his judges card is already running out of milage, apprently no significant amount of judges were present in Faisalabad, as few responded to Aitzaz's invitation to be guest of honour. The sooner PPP realize's this the better. -------------------- MUSHARRAF ZINDABAD!

But if not than Martial Law is certain with lot of bloodshed, and I do not think that it would be bad either (regardless of it being good or bad for economy). I won’t mind losing a bit more if Army comes in and clean Pakistan, getting rid of these crook politicians forever. |

I think that Zardari is just playing revenge game and trying to humiliate Nawaz. But you are right that he should come to his senses and stop playing games and start thinking of Pakistan and future of Pakistan. Ditching Nawaz would be most wise thing he could do.

Well its no surprise if he goes.
He has done an outstanding job. Problem is Pakistanis chose the same political scumbags again. They might be leaders of Pakistan, but please dont call or imagine them as Muslim leaders. I find them revolting. Also I dont want to see my life or my loved ones lives negatively affected because of international terrorism and crazy ideological militancies out of that region. |

Army plays down Musharraf report
President Pervez Musharraf has met Pakistan's army chief, Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, amid growing concerns over political and economic problems. An army spokesman also confirmed reports that some key military officials hand-picked by President Musharraf have been transferred. Mr Musharraf has resisted calls by his political rivals, who won in February's elections, to resign. The political stand-off is adding to the country's economic woes. Pakistan army spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas called both the army chief's meeting with President Musharraf and the redeployment of some key Musharraf appointees as a "routine" matter. He was reacting to a media report which said the army chief's meeting with President Musharraf was aimed at persuading him to quit. The report said the army had also removed a Musharraf loyalist from the command of the Rawalpindi-based 111 Brigade, which defence analysts say would play an important role in any military takeover or the sacking of a civilian government. The army had also replaced a security contingent of President Musharraf that was hand-picked by him, it said. 'Relic of the past' The moves come as President Musharraf faces stiffening resistance from the judges he sacked on 3 November when he imposed emergency rule in the country. Nawaz Sharif The president's opponents want sacked judges to be restored They are supported by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, which emerged as the second largest party in February's elections and now shares power with the country's largest party, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). The PML-N pulled out of the federal cabinet earlier this month when the PPP refused to agree to restore the sacked judges without constitutional reforms to back the move. Its leaders blamed the PPP for being soft on President Musharraf and favouring a working relationship with him. But in a rare outburst last week, PPP chief Asif Zardari called Mr Musharraf a "relic of the past", and someone who stood "between the people and democracy". Observers say this change of heart follows from President Musharraf's resistance to the PPP's reforms package that aim at clipping the president's powers and restoring the judges. A number of US lawmakers who visited Pakistan earlier this week have also criticised the US administration's dependence on President Musharraf. One of them, Senator Russ Feingold called for the restoration of judges as essential to constitutional reforms. The country's stock market has responded to this ongoing crisis by shedding nearly 3,000 points in trading in two months. The Pakistani rupee has also lost more than 10% value during the last two weeks. Meanwhile, the gap in trade balance has exceeded $10bn, due to a rising oil bill. In a meeting with members of the Karachi Stock Exchange in Islamabad on Wednesday, Mr Zardari said the government would focus on economic issues once the political issues were out of the way. -------------------- Respect to all our Military & Intel Agencies.
